I tend to agree with you but...

how much 6 home football games and 10-12 conference men's basketball games are leading factors in attracting students is yet to be determined. Tech sports were way down on my list for wanting to attend Virginia Tech. Tech's academic standing is pretty much the same today than it was 30-40 years ago. College football and men's basketball are definitely good advertisement. I do think it's true that colleges get a bump in applications when they are doing well in football or basketball. What percentage of undergrads apply to attend Tech to watch six football games? IMHO, academics is more dependent on research dollars and funding (state, federal, endowments,...). than athletic dollars Tech is top 50 in research and development and about 40 in football the past decade. Tech just received its largest number of applications in 2021-2022. How much of an effect did a 6-7 football team have on that increase? UConn's academics have remained steady despite failing to enter the P-5. I hope Tech's academic reputation isn't dependent on Power 5 football or sports in general. ** Edited by Old Line Hokie at 7/5/2022, 9:42:44 AM
