I've heard VT in discussion and VT media worth
Folks that have no respect to VT or don't know anything about the program see a program in SWVA and perceive the student body (they think 10-15k ) all just from SW VA and no national programs and dont bring in any markets (they just look at the map).
Internally, in the ACC, UNC, and frankly tobacco road, really have had no respect to VT, (you know they know nothing about the DC market or care). They have been against VT since the southern conference, the formation of the ACC and hated when VT worked the political realm to force membership. Externally, some of the cursory marketing folks in the networks have the same opinion. They are basing this on perception not any analytics.
Peeling the onion, VT is the college media ratings leader for the DC Richmond and Hampton Roads market, with view shares, interest in the program. VT frankly is all over Northern VA and DC market and in some media analytics, actually draw more viewers than Maryland. VT has 30,000 members of he Hokie Club, and its pushing clemson in participation. VT is beginning to be a force in many ACC sports, (and dont you think ACC blue bloods hate that VT won in 'their exclusive basketball tourney). Also, UVA has no market presence in DC market and Hampton Roads, and barely in Richmond, but as long as they where their Mr. Jefferson brand they think it is all they need. UVA got play into the SEC because, SEC was talking to VT and UNC, and UNC basically advised, if you want us, we do not want to go in with VT, we can go with UVA and UVA can carry the state. (Who does UNC think they are Texas???) and SEC folks are not going to intimidated by UNC, who are rookies, hell they delt with Texas and Ok, who eat programs like UNC).
I respect your concerns, and I feel VT knows who are the snakes. but optimistically, I think VT is preparing for this.. When it was reported the AD meetings even before for the 3-5-5 meetings, Whit was very active (and Pissed), in the meeting. Knowing VT was getting screwed, - our 3 could have been either BC or Louisville instead of Wake). There is a reason why the ACC commissioner looked worn out after appearance on the ACC Huddle. Also, I think the sudden cancelling of the Packer Durham show is big. ESPN is stuck in the GOR contract as well. If they can starve the Network and ACC coverage, maybe they can force the ACC to renegotiate (and reopen the GOR) and boom the opportunity is opened for an ACC attack.
For VT, I think the 400 million campaign is going well, and should keep us stable. Also, VT I think is prepared, if they stay in the ACC through the term, to raise enough money to stay in the game. I think VT is prepared to 1) demand compliance to the GOR, and if folks leave, give us the damn check. (we did this the Big East and Metro and can be very crappy) 2) be prepared with resources to be flexible to pivot quickly- I think internally they have been working scenarios so decisions can be made quick. 3) VT is going to make decisions for what is the best VT - hell with UVA, hell with the ACC.
There got to be a legal issue, when 2 big conferences can automatically eliminate any options for Programs such as Washington oregon, Miami, Oklahoma State, the Big 12 and the ACC in a playoff, and limit access to bowl games as well.
thank you for allowing me to diatribe about this. The bottom line, is VT needs to win football games. and coach Pry has alot on his shoulders.
