New US News rankings are out.
Of note is that Virginia Tech jumped from 62 last year to 47. Academic reputation matters to the B1G, so this should only help Virginia Tech's chances of getting an invite. Getting AAU membership would also help.
Here are all the ACC schools rankings:
3 Stanford
7 Duke
15 California
20 Notre Dame
22 North Carolina
24 Virginia
33 Georgia Tech
39 Boston College
47 Virginia Tech
47 Wake Forest
53 Florida State
60 NC State
67 Miami
67 Pittsburgh
67 Syracuse
86 Clemson
89 SMU
195 Louisville

“For 30 years, US News & World Report has been using a secret formula to rank the best colleges and universities in the United States. As a public service to our listeners, we hack the algorithm and discover the dirty little secret of the rankings game.” Podcast Link below.
Perhaps if President Sands had used the homemade hot sauce strategy used by another college president and discussed in the podcast, VT might have a top ten ranking by now.

hoax and consider them worthless. And even more importantly, most employers place little to no value in them either. Prospective students have always been the target of this scam with a small percentage using the rankings in their college selection process.
A proven hoax is still a proven hoax no matter how badly you want to believe in it.

Most students will use the rankings as a factor when deciding which school to go to.

location, cost, size, acceptance rates, degrees offered, scholarships, friends attending, etc., are far more important than magazine rankings to most prospective students.

Heck sports rankings are sham too, especially early season, but you still want your team ranked highly

Just using myself as an example, I could have gone to either UNC or NC State. All the other factors you listed were more or less the same, but I chose UNC because it has a better academic reputation, which is based largely on these kinds of rankings.

without a main campus medical school that attracts significant medical research funding. The AAU is an old boys club for sure, but you need 75% of existing members (54 members) to approve new members. The ACC now has 8 AAU members.

Does AAU member GA Tech have a med school?
Penn State's is in Hershey as you stated. Penn State's main campus is 70 miles (as the crow flies) from Hershey. Tech is only 25 miles. Does Notre Dame have a hospital? I think the biggest issue is top salaries for top professors, especially those who are known nationally and worldwide for their instruction and research. Some earn over $1 million a year. Doubt Tech can afford that. Tech research and development is AAU worthy. It's medical school is imrproving. I don't know if the new Alexandria Innovation Campus will help.

From the Columbia Missourian:
“The AAU dumped Nebraska essentially for two reasons.
First, the University of Nebraska’s medical school is at its Omaha campus, not the flagship campus in Lincoln. So, any federal research dollar, premier faculty member and publication in a prestigious journal from the medical school couldn’t be counted toward Nebraska’s AAU status.
Second, the university focuses heavily on agriculture research, a priority for a land grant institution. But in the eyes of the AAU, most agricultural research is not peer-reviewed, competitive research, so it is “not considered as highly,” AAU spokesman Barry Toiv said, compared with medical and economic research.”
It difficult to explain why this was an issue for Nebraska and not other schools. AAU membership is a mystery even to their members. It’s a private club and little is known publicly about the inner workings. It just seemed logical that if it was an issue for an existing member, that it would also be a factor for new membership, but who really knows.

It most surely is on the “grounds” as they refer to their campus.
And the entire campus is in Albemarle County but within the city limits.
(In response to this post by Mercury)

Or is it split between the county and city. In Virginia cities and counties are totally separate from each other.

the area around the campus was annexed many years ago. The campus is reported on the Albemarle County non-taxable property records. It’s a strange situation but it’s true.
U Va actually pays “payments-lieu-of taxes” to both the County and City as some of its non campus properties are in both localities. The city provides municipal services such as water and sewer services, and fire and rescue services. 911 services are provided by a joint 911 department/commission, joint adult and juvenile detention centers provide incarceration services, the Albemarle County Commonwealth Attorney and court facilities serve as the prosecutor and courts for crimes incurred on the university campus, and the university, like VT has its own police department.

They have less than half the research funding of VT. Frankly VT's research funding surpassed all of the new members except for ASU.

aren’t publicly well defined. Who knows who is probably one of the big factors in receiving an invitation to this private club. Having a medical school and being able to attract research funding seems to be another major factor. It is hard to explain why some schools get invited and others don’t. Also, it hard to explain why some schools get kicked out ( Nebraska, Iowa State, Syracuse, etc. ) and others don’t.

instead of them, they IMHO would have been ranked better by now. Reason being, they pull more Northeastern students who traditionally have had higher standardized test scores and GPA’s. A lot of this is where your students come from, and how many are you going to accept. The smaller schools that accept less, can raise Scores and GPA’s much easier.

Cutting programs and faculty. The sagging economics and demographics of the state of WV has finally caught up to them, dragging enrollment numbers down. The ACC did the right thing in passing over them.
(In response to this post by Stech)

This hurts them in the rankings since their acceptance rate is so high. Louisville doesn't have this constraint so they have a much higher ceiling. They also made a commitment to the ACC to seriously improve their academics which will happen over time. Although I would love to have WVU in the ACC I now seriously doubt it ever happens after adding Stanford and Cal.
(In response to this post by Stech)

Reaction. But Stanford and California are just two more no votes when it comes to considering WVU

stadium, Cincy was languishing in mediocracy. Louisville made the investments in their facilities, were a stronger athletic program in Football and basketball, and would have gone to the B12 with WVU if the B12 didn't have Texas nixing it.

The ACC is not regretting that, WVU wishes they were in the ACC. That was my point and everyone on both sides agrees.
I talk to WVU grads every week and they and I all agree that should have been the move.
But still with no regrets.
When the football conference landscape implodes in 3-4 years it won’t matter anyway.

Not to mention they were coming off a BCS win over Florida. Lamar Jackson gave the ACC much needed football publicity that Maryland will never be capable of. Stanford (tied with Harvard in rankings), Cal and SMU will more than make up the academic difference.
