COLORADO AND ARIZONA WILL MOVE TO THE BIG 12, NEW REPORT CLAIMS

Unconfirmed report: CU to announce move to XII this week (early as 2024-25)
I live in Colorado and actively follow CU. A personal contact with connections to the CU Board of Regents posted on Allbuffs.com today that his sources have told him this is imminent. He's been right on all but one (maybe 9/10) of his reports of this magnitude since I've known him over the last 9 years.

Do all Big12 members get a tin foil hat when they join?

B12 keeps throwing mud against the wall in public. Sooner or later
something will stick. I also don't think their TV contract is as good as they say with Okie and UT leaving.

"No word on the #Utes and #SunDevils,
but Yormark may just take two and save some spots for #ACC teams. Wishful thinking and actually laughable considering the ACC would have the rights to the Big 12's ACC schools until 2036. Plus, can any ACC school afford to leave with the exit fee/penalty? And...... does the Big 12 have to money to satisfy other newcomers because we all know the Big 12 won't be bringing in SEC or B1G money?

"Radio host Greg Swaim" sounds like a BigXII homer.
Or at least a click bait charlatan. And exactly what ACC schools does he think would come? And are they better than Arizona State and Utah? And anyone who is "saving spots" for ACC teams I guess thinks the ACC is going to implode in the next 6 months. And why are they "saving spots"? This is the same conference talking about adding Gonzaga for basketball. Or UConn. I realize they want to paint a picture of being open for business. But have some self awareness.

Oklahoma State Alumnus. So sure.

Big 12 replaced Texas and Oklahoma...
with UCF, Houston, Cincinati, BYU and possibly Arizona and Colorado. The big coup would be to bring back Nebraska into the Big 12. ;)

You know Nebraska is just chomping at the bit to move to the B12.
Who cares about losing $30M+ per year? It just isn't important.
wwhokie1 wwhokie1
Yeah, I'm sure Nebraska is trying to get out of the big 10 while everybody
Else is trying to get in. Every big 12 team would jump at the chance to get into the big 10, so you're right, no chance Nebraska wants to get out for a shot at the Big 12

They make good money as an afterthought where there are now.
I don't think Trev Alberts would want to give that up.

I don’t believe that there is a satisfactory linear TV deal to be had at
this point. It’s like waiting for a train to come that you have already missed and don’t realize it. Plus some PAC 12 Presidents aren’t willing to sign a GOR that involves mostly streaming content like an offer from Apple. This has made George Kliavkoff’s job extremely difficult if not impossible. It has now been almost a year since the PAC 12 started negotiating a new TV contract and they have been unsuccessful to date. I have no idea what circumstances would have to change in a month or 6 months or even a year that would all of sudden make the linear networks want PAC 12 content and be willing to pay for it at a level that keeps the conference together. With respect to the ACC, I don’t believe that the “magnificent seven” were meeting in secrecy behind the commissioner’s back for negotiating leverage on the subject of uneven conference revenue distribution. They were meeting on the subject of getting out of the GOR which is holdings the conference together and keeping some schools from pursuing financially better options. What I would be interested in is knowing who was the Judas among Judases who exposed the magnificent seven right before the Annual Spring Meeting? My guess (based on almost nothing) is that it was North Carolina State. The news keeps getting worse for the PAC 12. This show out of Utah was one of the biggest PAC 12 homer shows out there, but not any more.

The PAC12 can get a deal tomorrow at American Athletic Conference rates.
S

How much of that money is Texas/Oklahoma exit fee? How much of that money
is because Texas and Oklahoma are still in the conference. I didn't listen to the whole thing, but if they said something about it, what was the minute mark that they said it in?
W
WBGV
On a different subject,
there is a scheduled Colorado BOG meeting happening tomorrow and speculation is running wild. I found out about it on Greg Fluguar’s YouTube channel ( the guy from Minnesota ) and thought it sounded interesting. It begins at the 7 minute mark and the gist of what the meeting might be about runs for 15 minutes or so. It may end up being nothing but Fluguar thinks it is about conference realignment. I guess we will find out for certain tomorrow or later this week.

Maybe Deion has told the existing BOG to enter the portal
W
WBGV
Deion and the portal - 79 of 85 scholarship players transfer out - brutal.
Deion Sanders cleaned house at Colorado. Does anyone still think that the powers that be at Colorado care about academics, the student athlete, and conference affiliation other than the money part which is needed to pay coaches and players. At this point, it seems like we are just waiting for Colorado and the Big 12 to cross their T's and dot their I's for an announcement. Deion is going where the money is and the talent is concentrated (Texas & Florida) and the BOG will follow him or else - as you suggested. It’s a new world.

I don’t think any this year.
I’m not that knowledgable on Big 12 finances, but I remember reading an article where it said that the Big 12 will likely just keep the last year (2023-24) of Texas and OU’s conference distribution to offset the $100 million exit fee (combined). Also, the 8 existing members are financing expansion by paying the reduced conference distribution for the 4 new members until the new contract starts. The $100 million withheld from Texas and OU at the end of the next year will then be used to pay back the 8 existing Big 12 members.

Not surprisingly, the Big 12 is handling comms and PR much better than the
ACC. I agree with others that these articles are clickbait without much reason to give them credence. That said, the reporters are likely being fed information by people aligned with the Big 12 and most people who read the articles aren’t sufficiently informed to know what is really happening. So the perception is that the Big 12 is growing with some interesting schools expressing interest in joining. Meanwhile, in ACC land, the perception is anywhere from 2 to 7 schools want to leave. Some will say it doesn’t matter. But it does for recruiting and casual fan interest.
M
marcbvtgm
How is any of that “handling it much better”?
Perception in this case is meaningless - and maybe even seen as a desperation move - to those that matter.
mrcaniac mrcaniac
PAC12 AD's and Presidents have been consistently denying the rumors
Just because they aren't leaking BS to Twitter clickbaiters doesn't mean they are failing the PR. They are acting like the adults in the room while the BigXII clickbait sites are acting like freshman conspiracy theorists.

Big 12 PR
Yeah, Big 12 PR has been out in full force since USC / UCLA left. Though misguided with some of the stuff, that also shows how much passion there is with Big 12 fans. And you see that with packed stadiums.

You just have to consider.....
the sources and take them for what they are worth. In the case of the Big 12, it's media shills and message board trolls, like some here, that is not much. Best to just wait until there is a named conference representative and/or named TV partner exec willing to go on record. "According to unnamed sources" or inferring from a general quote that "we will do what is best for school XXX" means someone is doing no more than indulging in wishful thinking. ** Edited by 2hhoop3 at 6/5/2023, 8:47:57 PM

No ACC school would leave for the big 12
Unless the ACC was already dead. And even if a few ACC schools left, the leftovers might still be better than the Big 12. So Unless the sec and big 10 have guaranteed offers to enough acc schools to blow up the conference, it ain't happening.

2

The problem with........
PR and comms with little creedence is that there comes a day where it will be put up or shut up. Making promises or claims that cannot be delivered on usually has worse results than making no claims at all. Larry Scott's picture currently appears on this poster, of course, he is initially laughing all the way to the bank while the PAC 12 schools he fleeced and his successor are left to try and clean up the trainwreck.

"Nothing becomes official until the #Pac12 gets their TV deal finalized,"
So then there is no news, it's like talking to the team that is recruiting a player, they all say they think they are going to get them. You have to have that mentality. Maybe they get them, but this is just click bait IMHO. Nothing has been resolved, but I am sure a conditional verbal was probably made, but that's only as good as the paper it is written on.

The PAC cannot make a contract until their membership stabilizes.
Some calendar deadlines are fast approaching. Things will break very soon, not in The PAC's favor.
S

They are in trouble, they were in trouble years ago because Larry Scott ran
them in the ground. Many of us here talked about how awful he was for years. I get that, but all this announcement before the ink is dry is a very slippery slope.

I've been hearing the Pac12 deal is $20M per school
And mostly non linear. Time will tell and we shall see. A tough time to be in the "Conference of Champions" for sure. ** Edited by Millpoint at 6/5/2023, 2:33:07 PM

ESPN is offering $120 million per year for the Saturday 10 pm games.
Those are linear, but that is apparently all ESPN wants now. The rest has to be created by Apple and Amazon. Neither want to produce any games though. But with the PAC12 networks, they have their own production capability. All I'm quoting is rumor sources, but credible ones. Not Greg Swain. Bottom line: PAC12 is in trouble. ACC is not in trouble. ** Edited by HOO86 at 6/5/2023, 11:32:08 PM

Yeas, but the news really cripples P12 negotiation power for a good deal.

Someone is poisoning the well
but who?
HokieAl HokieAl
exactly. Every one of these rumors weakens the P12 position
It's a great strategy by the B12 to force the issue. And I'm sure Colorado is a willing participant. Could be a very explosive summer if this does come to pass.
B
Big12 guy
it's possible that it strengthens their position, especially if Apple or
Amazon are the ones unwilling to pony up the money. Are they threatening to leave to weaken the PAC's negotiations? I see it from the other side of the coin. It could very well be a negotiation strategy.
HokieAl HokieAl
but no GOR for PAC. That increases risk for media partners
I just don't see where the PAC has any real leverage here. All the media partners know the teams are targeted for poaching and that performance has been down for the conference as a whole. It's a tough spot for the PAC.
O
obguthr
Tough spot may be too generous
Tough spot was when USC and UCLA announced they are leaving. Oregon and Washington refusing to sign a GOR and the four corner schools openly flirting with The 12 makes it an impossible situation. Add to that the Comcast overpayments and the Holiday Bowl suits and they are already cooked. What could the Pac-12 possibly do to gain leverage? Add San Diego St.? SMU? The Pac-12 needs a miracle. I do remind myself that people were saying the same things about The 12 when OUT announced they were leaving, but the current Pac-12 situation is far worse, IMO.
Maroon Baboon Maroon Baboon
UW and UO might as well sign a short term Pac-12 GOR at the point.
The B1G clearly are going to drag their feet on this would-be invitation. And signing a GOR would likely keep the four corner schools from jumping to the BX just yet. All options for the Big Ten and the BX will still be there three or four years from now.
B
Big12 guy
It is. But it's GOR or bust no matter where the money lands.
B
Big12 guy
I agree with this, and as we dont know what is being discussed
behind closed doors, Colorado may be trying to enhance their position, as I'm guessing they are discussing uneven distributions somewhere along the line. Like the 7 from the ACC - it was a negotiation. I don't think the PAC breaks up here - nor do i think they should. if they do, it is only then that the Big12 looks attractive. I think the same way about the ACC. They will find a way, even if the top 2-4 teams are poached. The Big12 is only an option if they fall apart, and like the PAC, that would be self inflicted.
T
tarheelblue
Pac teams won't leave for the Big 12 until they see the new media contract.
Until they actually have the numbers to compare the new Pac media money to the Big 12 media money, nobody is moving anywhere unless the Big 10 comes calling.

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner......
the PR Game Yormark has been running will eventually be tested. He will have to produce real numbers for his own current members and, if they are smart(not a given with PAC 12 schools) the PAC 12 members being approached would be wise to get written guarantees from the Big 12 and its media partners as Yormark may be selling a bill of goods just like Larry Scott did previously.
H
HOO86
Both leagues are down graded.
The breadwinners went SEC and B1G. It's smoke and mirrors now. I do think the Big 12 is getting the better deal between the two, but behind the ACC. John Skipper consistently pushing APCC is for a reason. But I'd rather have WVU/Cincy. National would really strain the ACC
H
HouClone
West Virginia / Cincinnati
Interesting these two are being discussed on ACC sites as hopeful potential expansion targets. These two have been criticized as lower end schools on forums for years. Now when the ACC is feeling the heat, these schools are super attractive.
H
HOO86
Proximity more than anything else, along with existing Rivals
But I think the ship has sailed on them for now. We've allowed it to sail for a second time regarding WVU.
2

They have been mentioned......
by some earlier than now and some still do not mention them. However, a good analogy is probably a 3 that becomes a 6 the closer you get to closing time.
M
Millpoint
West Virginia has no interest in joining the ACC
The best teams will be leaving at the first chance. No sense in jumping on a sinking ship.
H
HOO86
The Best Teams in the Big XII have already made plans to leave.
I don't necessarily consider Texas Football a Best Team. Haven't done anything in almost 20 years, but they are a TV draw. Oklahoma Football has been a Best Team. Baylor and TCU have done well too. I'm not sure the best teams in the ACC have a place to go, and with a linear network with ESPN, the ACC will be ahead. WVU can pass on the ACC if they want to. I still would like to have them join us. But they need the ACC to actually invite them. Without that, makes no difference.
M
Millpoint
It's all a moot point anyway
WVU has signed Big 12 GoR until the next decade. By then the best ACC brands will be out or on their way out. UC and WVU would have been good additions to the ACC in the past but that ship has sailed.
2
2hhoop3
Unless you are......
already aboard a ship going down like the Big 12 but, whether or not they have interest is really irrelevant without an actual invite.
H
hokieZ71
Why would anybody enter into a contract with the Pac 12, given this news?
