When I first heard the rumors I didn't think it would ever happen. Then when it really happened and the details of the deal came out I was shocked that UNC had finally decided to go all in on football. I honestly don't know where all the money is going to come from to financially sustain this, but they just seem to be going off the idea that "if you build it, they (5-star players and multi-million dollar donors) will come. I can see this going two ways. Either this will succeed and UNC will start winning conference championships and making it to the playoffs regularly, or it will fail spectacularly and we will still be mediocre in football but with a broke athletic department. This reminds me a little of what SMU did to get into a power conference. With the shifting college football landscape, SMU knew that the time was running out for them to ever become relevant in football, so they swung for the fences and it seems to have paid off for them. I think that the UNC decision makers feel that the window for becoming relevant in football is quickly closing, as the big boys in the SEC and B1G consolidate power, and that it's now or never for UNC to just go for it. And the more I think about it, the more I'm glad they did. I love college basketball (and some of the other sports), but the new reality is that if you aren't relevant in football then you aren't really relevant at all. And if all of this fails spectacularly, at least we can say that we tried and gave it everything we could. As for whether it's good for the ACC, I would say that it's always good when another ACC school finally decides to treat football seriously. If the ACC is going to have a future, more ACC schools are going to have to start taking football more seriously too. Virginia Tech’s current AD was a baseball player who played for his Dad as the Head Coach at JMU. He went all in for Olympic Sports, much like many in the ACC. I love Olympic Sports, but like you said, it’s all about football now. I have to admit I am concerned about Bellichick (spell check didn’t get me this time but it tried) taking top 5 recruits from Virginia, but I suspect he will do what Saban did when he left the Dolphins, and recruit the whole country. I am going to be interested to see what level DC and OL Coach we get with Carolina setting a new standard.Thanks for posting again, it can get rough around here sometimes, but most of us enjoy the different perspectives, even if we don’t always agree with them.

I would think money would never be a problem for UNC. I wish the ACC as a conference could use the way back machine and taken football seriously when Penn State was still an independent. In 1980, if the conference had had its act together, it would have expanded and added the Nittany Lions, Hokies, Mountaineers, Hurricanes, Seminoles, Yellow Jackets, South Carolina, and 1 other (Cincinnati, Rutgers, Louisville, Pitt) to make a behemoth football conference. The fact that Penn State was looking around for a conference should have made the ACC snap them up even if they did not add anyone else.

Probably not good for Tech recruiting efforts in Virginia and the Carolinas. Likely makes Pry's job a little tougher but yeah... good for the ACC's football image. How it works out for UNC is still unknown. It will be much easier if Belichick can find another Tom Brady. ;)

Hiring Bellicheck may signal that UNC is adopting a more professional sports model. It may also indicate that UNC is looking toward the P2 conferences. If that's true, it's certainly a bad thing for the ACC.

If say if NCSU or Georgia Tech or VT had hired him it might have improved their perception as a candidate for the P2, so in that regard it could be negative to the conference as a whole as to make it more destabilized. But UNC is fine for P2 status regardless . As such ACC can bask in the wake of the short term attention unc is generating.

They will be on ABC/ESPN pretty much exclusively, much like Deion at Colorado. Their game against Richmond will probably get The CW, and their game at Charlotte will probably be on ESPN2/U
