They're in Roanoke. I've seen a few around my house, but saw a whole
bunch over around Cave Spring a couple of weeks ago.

They are the D student of bugs
When I mow in the woodsy area, they jump and fly 2 feet. I accelerate. Mission accomplished.

Now they are saying they aren’t that bad because they eat Tree of heaven
which is a pernicious invasive plant specie

They’re all over the place here in the DC area
I figure I’ve done my civic duty by smashing loads of them.

Eh...are they proving to be destructive?
Yes... invasives are generally bad. But they're here and I'm not seeing/hearing of any "destruction". The environment is resilient and almost always seems to sort it out without an awful lot of observable negative impacts long term. Woody adelgid? Meh. Gypsy moth? No big deal. Zebra mussel? Whatever. Emerald ash borerer? Minor pain in the ash

Zebra mussel is a huge deal in the Great Lakes

Emerald Ash Borer is legit. Sadly.
But have lots of firewood as a result.

All over in Loudoun. Can’t sit on the deck without them flying into me.
Awful flyers too. They’re like shot-up warplanes landing on the deck of an aircraft carrier. I now just bat them out of the air with my hand as they enter my airspace. Hate them.
