I'll weigh in here. I don't have a $¼ mill just laying around....
Even if I did there are a ∞ of things I'd wish to do than getting on Wiener Mobile looking sub with one porthole to go 2½ miles underwater to see a 111 year old wreck.
WTH I mean. Yes I feel for the families and friends of all those involved but it just goes to show that fools and their money are soon departed.

is that Triton makes several submarines that are well tested and well proven to operate at those depths and beyond.
if you want to go on a 'research' mission to the Titanic why not select a proven craft rather than an experimental corner-cutting design...

Some would call two weeks of camping, hunting, and fishing heaven on earth. Others would think of that as hell. Some like extreme sports, others get nauseous at the thought of any kind of adrenaline rush. Some like visiting exotic locales, others have anxiety at the thought of being too far from home.
I spent probably 20+ years of my life basically taking the same vacation every year. It was easy, enjoyable, predictable, and comfortable. But it sure didn't enrich me as a person. Now, I'm trying to do more things I've never done and go more places I've never gone just so I can experience more of the world.
I, too, don't have a quarter mil just laying around that I can throw at a vacation. I also don't find a trip to the wreckage of the Titanic to be all that interesting for my taste. But I do kinda understand the wanderlust desire to do something new and unique. And taking a tour bus to either outer space or the depths of the ocean is definitely new and unique.
I wouldn't do it myself, but I do get it.

i never really appreciated how absolutely treacherous the ocean is until I got certified to dive. My first dive of 100 ft scared the absolute hell out of me. You realize how precarious everything about your life is underwater....maybe they had never really done anything like this before??
I have no idea, but there is no way would would get me in anything less than US Navy grade at those depths, meaning like a real submarine.

so he absolutely knew the risks. You would think he wouldn't get in something that he didn't feel was safe. It's not something I would ever do but then I also wouldn't want to climb Everest or go into space. But there are people who enjoy the challenge and the thrill and pushing the boundaries of exploration.

entered the mouth of one at about 25' in a Fla. spring dive & ventured in maybe 50' till it hit me this aint cool ! well that & comin face to face with a big ol moray eel- that dude could take your face off if he wanted

at the very end, came face to face with a very large goliath grouper, with a lobster sticking out of it's mouth. Not a big deal, but being in a confined space with only 1 way to go is a bit unnerving.

While I get what you are saying (i.e. wanting a 100% certified and tested vessel that is proven reliable by some of the smartest people on the planet), I don't think the Navy really does much with deep water exploration.
Tested and proven deep sea submersibles are more the purview of oceanography than the military.

Dated himself by not knowing that game controllers are indeed used on submarines now. Hard to believe for some based on posts but game controllers are very practical and highly engineered. In addition, they are cheap (COTS - commercial off the shelf) when compared to being designed and built by a government contractor.

father (even step) is lost and soon to be dead. It STILL doesn't excuse it. He is high functioning enough to go after internet hookers and go to some concert. Whatever conditions he has, the one that stands out IMO is Spoiled rich POS
