I'm over it now. I've said from the beginning
that I wanted Chesney, then Franklin came into play and I wanted him, Franklin, first and Chesney a close second. Now, I'm all in on Chesney. He is younger, shown he can win ANYWHERE. I think he has the pulse of today's kids. I don't know if he can recruit like Franklin but with NIL recruiting will take a back seat.
Bring On CHESNEY

Having position coach experience at the P4 level should not qualify you over someone that has winning Head Coaching experience anywhere.

I’ll grant you the administration part of the job is bigger but VT is hiring a GM and building a football org that’s explicitly focused on that part thereby putting a lot of resources around his weaknesses.
Now back to football. The game is the same and he’s a noted Xs & Os guy who adjusts well in game. He’s been a HC for over a decade so it’s laughable to say he’s a rookie HC.

The most Defenses at the P2 and little p2 level can forces offenses to play in much smaller windows.

If I have this type of player I do this. If I have that type of player I do that. Given he’s repeatedly leveled up in his HC career he’s shown the ability to adapt in that manner. If he’d been in D3 for his entire career that would be a concern.

Has he ever hired a GM before? How big is his coaching tree? The VT HC will have to be fundraiser-has he ever really had to do? Has he ever managed an organization this big? Or even seen one managed? VT is ready to throw some money at the FB issue but, the next HC has to know how to effectively spend it.
Back to football. Guys like Gundy, Fuente, Kelly, etc didn't forget how to coach Xs and Os. The job has changed. It's much more than just on the field. Notice all the older coaches getting out or getting fired. Hiring a HC is a crapshoot. He might be awesome but, he has some risk too

He may have a say in it but he won’t be alone.
And he’s been coaching college football his entire career. Fundraising is a part of the gig at every level and, again, he’ll have more support than any previous coach in that space.
As for those coaches, Gundy stayed too long, got lazy, & failed to adapt. Fu got knee capped by the Beamer 4-evs mob, and Kelly left Notre Dame because he said he couldn’t win a natty there (LMAO, thank you Marcus Freeman). Not exactly proving your point with those examples.

Scored 70 against at UNC. Beat Louisville in the trenches at their place and Louisville was fortunate to get the win with a couple big plays. And they absolutely take care of business in their league which isn't easy. I'd be happy with the hire.

a lot of the issues he'll have to deal with on the P4 level- many of which have little to do with on field FB. He's never had to fundraise, never had to manage a huge staff, never had to negotiate a high level NIL program, never had to recruit on a high level, never had to deal with the press/fan scrutiny of a high level program, etc. Hiring a HC is a crapshoot. He might be an awesome P4 HC but, let's not forget he'll have a lot of learning he'll have to do on the job.

And he magically recruited much better at Utah than at Bowling Green and recruited much better at Florida and OSU than at Utah.
There are far more examples of guys who punch above their weight class having more success moving up in class than guys who push below their weight class having success moving down. But, yes, nothing is guaranteed.

If JMU sneaks into the play-offs, then Chesney is not available until almost Christmas (unless he pulls out since JMU would likely be knocked out the 1st round).

HS recruiting isn't actually taking a back seat...it's taken a backseat here at VT because we can't get much talent out of high schools anymore, but the portal hasn't replaced high school recruiting everywhere, it mainly replaces guys that are transferring or are busts.
Secondly, there's good reason to believe that there's going to be a modicum of return to sanity on the NIL front. University rev share is being capped, and there are measures in place to limit NIL money to legitimate business purposes, and not payforplay. How enforceable that is remains to be seen, but I think there's reason to believe players will start looking at schools again for more reasons than just the highest bidder.
So, I think high school recruiting can still be super important.

Yes, "The House v. NCAA" settlement introduces a clearinghouse—run by Deloitte—to vet NIL deals over $600 for "fair market value" and compliance. Revenue sharing is separate from NIL and will be school-funded, with its own oversight mechanisms. But it doesn’t prevent third-party collectives or boosters from offering NIL deals using Delaware based corporations controlled by lawyers who could argue FMV until they are blue in the face.
The P2 controls the enforcement, not the NCAA. The NIL Clearinghouse itself wouldn’t be able to block certain deals—instead, it would just flag them. Schools will be in charge of determining the difference between a booster and collective versus a non-affiliated brand. And Deloitte will potentially charge hefty fees, anywhere from $5,000 to $500,000 per school. Plenty of questions remain and no one seems to want to answer them at this poing..... including whether it’s legal for the NCAA and conferences to determine “fair-market value”; what penalties athletes will face if they refuse to participate in the process or go forward with deals regardless; or whether the rules are enforceable.
And boosters have long found ways to skirt the rules. With FMV very subjective, all it would take is for a booster to have a star player create an Instagram page, Pay $1000-2000 to an Indian/Chinese "farm" to create 20K-50K in "followers" practically within a week and then argue that the star players's social media reach or brand appeal is there to justify a single $500K NIL from Company A.

How many of those 28 will remain at PSU for all 4/5 yrs? I'll bet very few.
That's why HS recruiting just isn't that important. It's not to say it's meaningless, but it is not remotely the foundation of how program is built and maintained anymore.
Do you suddenly think the schools and backers which cheated for a hundred years to get a competitive advantage will suddenly play by these supposed new NIL rules? LOL.

...big programs. They'll probably have to display their value at a lower level before receiving a huge NIL payout at the top college football level.
Now that excludes the "can't miss" high school players that you know will be in the NFL down the road...
