If VT won out to go 7-5 (6-2), where would PM be on your coach list?
If PM managed to go 7-2 with the roster he has to work with and the in season turbulence from the Pry firing, then I would want him to get a very very serious consideration. Of course I highly doubt any coach could pull off four straight wins with what we have left on the schedule. But if he did…I’d be damn impressed.

I hope he gets a HC or OC job somewhere
He's a good guy and I appreciate what he has done.

Coach of the Year....but "un-possible".

I think that if they keep scoring points like they did in the second half,
he should be considered for OC. Remember we were down 20-10 at halftime, and Kyron didn't look good, but then they let him run and wow was that a different offense in the second half and the two overtimes. ** Edited by Stech at 10/28/2025, 6:56:55 PM

He would be the best coach VT didn’t hire.

He would get a legit interview and be on my short list.

People have done the "interim was successful, lets hire him" before
I didn't research a bunch of situations, but it fades pretty fast would be my guess

I think Dabo, Brent Key and WFU coach Dickert are ones. Marcus Freeman is
sort of one but not due to a dismissal/firing.

Right now we’re going to be lucky to win 4. FSU is 50/50 shot
And that’s the best opportunity. I think they are on the verge of folding and I’ve never been overly impressed with Castellanos. That said if they show up to play, they can out talent VT in a heartbeat. Louisville has a top 25 passing game so that’s an awful matchup. They are a very good defensive team too so they will have to make repeated mistakes for VT to win. Miami’s receivers are going to have a career days. I’m guessing Beck breaks single game passing records for Da U. He’s not infallible but he’s much better than Cal’s QB. UVA is just due. They are a solid squad who executes well on both sides of the ball. Their coach has done a great job. Gotta give to him for flipping the script.

From what I saw Saturday, UVA is a 50/50 game

I would say…
UVA and FSU are equally 50/50. UVAs QB is very important to them and he clearly has a hurt left shoulder. Miami and Louisville are 75-25 losses. But yes - crazier things have happened. I feel better about Miami than Louisvillle. No matter how you slice it - a tough schedule. 2-2 would be impressive

I agree, a month ago I would give us zero chance against UVA

Won't happen, but would consider if coachNew hasn't been locked-in...
It's more likely the remaining games end with a thud... I'm a PM fan and think he's been a good hc under difficult circumstances, but vt does not have the horses imo...

If he pulls that off someone else in P4 just might offer him if we don't.
I think you'd have to give him a very close look at the least. I don't think you go out and hire a guy like Manny Diaz over Montgomery, if he runs the table. Unless its one of our top two candidates, I think you keep Montgomery if he runs the table from here on out.

Not in the top 5. There is more to running a program than on field. Needs
to be able to recruit at a high level as well. You can put him on the list, but I think he needs to go prove himself somewhere before you give him a P4 HC job. In season interim with a team you didn't recruit isn't the same as 2-4 years somewhere with a team you recruited/evaluated/developed.

You know he was a previous, at least somewhat successful HC right?

You consider 43-53 successful?

At Tulsa, the smallest FBS school...it's pretty normal
Digging into his seasons there, when he had a healthy team they did quite well. But he had several years where his QBs were decimated by injuries and had to start 2 and 3 string guys, some of whom were true freshmen.

At a school half the size of Wake Forest? He had some success

Ok now look at James Franklins, Bob Chesney's, Shane Beamers, Dan Mullen's
resumes and tell me that he is more qualified with 1 interim season here(he was just hired as a coordinator(in February) this season so he didn't have much involvement in bringing in a ton of the pieces).

I think, at least for stretches the people in Tulsa did

you mentioned "prove himself" and "2-4 years somewhere with a team..."
It seemed you thought he hadn't done that, which he had.

Yes, he needs to prove himself on the recruiting trail and show that he can
do all the aspects that it will take to get VT back in the picture. Being an interim coach in one season doesn't make him more qualified than the other candidates being discussed in my honest opinion. I love the guy and hope he finds another job or even we make room for him on the new staff, but he should not be the permanent head coach. ** Edited by vivitron73 at 10/28/2025, 2:36:56 PM

Top 3 at least.
Big if, obviously, but given the remaining games it would be foolish to argue against at least top 3 if he managed to pull it off. I like him a lot more than I thought I would. I understand the urge to burn everything to the ground, but I also respect how he has handled things thus far and his raw emotion (happiness, tears of joy, pride in his players emotion.. not sideline grumpy man Brian Kelly anger emotion) is something that I seriously value. Monty is still trying, and he's motivating his players to try, even though most people have entirely given up on the season.. That's been lacking with previous coaches, and there's no guarantee that it will continue with future coaches (unless we got a Saban type, I guess.. lol). What needs to change the most IMO (and I know I am not alone here) is the structure and mindset of the athletic department and football operations in general. That seems to be happening, at least with what's being said publicly. Ballein can kick rocks. All of the "good ol' boy" club needs to go. Monty isn't that.

If anything he's secured a job somewhere
I can see why the team is playing hard for him from his emotion after the game. He's an easy guy to like. He comes across as very genuine. This is not the same team that quit vs ODU. I'll pull hard for Monty wherever he coaches next.
