A question we should have asked in 2021 but were too busy telling ourselves
VT was better than that. Feeling pretty stupid about that now.

I assume he didn't even get a phone call. At least VT got an aw shucks guy.

Why would he leave Indiana/BIg 10 to come here?

Love to have him, but why would he leave a P2 school?

A lot of people Monday Morning Quarterbacking over Cignetti.
I don't remember many on this board having him as their choice back then. Lots of names being thrown around back then though. Did anyone have him on their short list back then? I didn't. But then again, it wasn't my (our) job to know. The people who picked Fuente and Pry, and missed out on Cignetti will be gone. But getting him now is a nonstarter. We should have bought Apple stock in 2003 for pennies. Now, it's about $250 a share. He'd be out of our price range now. Yeah. Cignetti either stays at IU, or goes to the blue blood that is the highest bidder.

Woukd not worked
Tech wasnt committed to the funding at the time. Apparently, lightning struck VT , and we are committing the funds. Listen the big hires wants to know how much "we" as the University are commited. Bargain days are over Hokies.

He was the pick last time if he wanted it...such a bad decision on Tech's
part back then not to go with proven HC at any level. I do feel Cignetti would have righted the ship, but doubt he would have been here long term. He's def primin' for a big time job real soon (unless Indy pays him)

At this point, I’m not concerned about coaching longevity
I’d settle for a Buzz Williams type to raise the profile of the program before moving on five or so years later.

I’ll be surprised if he doesn’t replace the likes of DeBoer at Bama soon
Or some other similar job at a major program. Some team is gonna throw huge money at that guy.

He was right when he said to google him. He wins.

Main reason is he’s way out of our price range now.
If we’d hired him a few years ago, we could have gotten a bargain.

again when folks see the extra $$$ we will be able to compete
We will be able to afford both the 7-9 million salaries for power 2 coaches and the escalating staff salaries and numbers. It will be no problem THe era of bargin perspective of VT is the thing of the past.

He already makes $8 Million a year with a current $13 Million buyout
His staff makes over $11 Million per year. Even with the new money he is one of the few that we couldn't afford, or at least shouldn't.

It’s not just the $$$ for coach salaries.

So we had a shot at Cignetti, Shane, and Charlie Huff last time
And we passed on all for Pry?

I’m not sure how much any of those guys wanted to come to Blacksburg.
I’ve heard Pry was far from VT’s first choice, because several others declined.

I never liked the Pry hire mainly as I knew nothing about him and
he wasn't a head coach. We had proven head coaches to grab, and Cignetti was my favorite next to Chadwell and Huff. Huff, I'm sure would have taken the job. I've heard Cignetti did not want the job, but I'm not sure on that one. At this point, going from Indiana to VT is a step down, at least conference-wise. We def have a better football fan base. Cignetti is only going to rise up from where he is now. ** Edited by fnhokie at 9/21/2025, 4:23:44 PM
