SMU Celebrates first day in the ACC
SMU appears excited to be in the ACC.
CAL is still showing PAC12 on their website and Stanford has no mention of conference.
PAC12 has dropped them from their website.

our opponents were suddenly in the Pac-# on the west coast. Bringing Cal, SMU, & the tree into the ACC is the absolute stupidest thing in college sports ever, and the perfect example of why they just need to hurry up and have two conferences for minor league football and minor league b-ball (M&W) with regional divisions, and then all other sports go back to some normal regional conferences. Can you imagine being a wrestler, tennis player, soccer, softball, or baseball player at Stanford or Cal having to travel to the east coast for every away conference game...ditto for football & basketball, just stupid. The closest ACC school to Stanford is actually farther away than what their teams had to travel for any Pac-12 conference game. Just stupid! Stanford also has a bunch of non-ACC sports like beach volleyball, gymnastics, rugby, and M&W water polo that won't be in the ACC. I imagine all the insane travel will negatively impact their player's studies and possibly their performances too. How can it not; ditto for ACC teams traveling out west.

summary, not a huge difference between acc schools overall in terms of travel time when you factor in typical flight times [travel math], road distances from schools to their nearest airports [googlemaps] Assumptions include: 1) Tree using SFO [instead of SJC], and SMU using DFW [instead of DAL] -although I checked both sets and not much overall difference even if they did use 2nd airports, and CAL using OAK; 2) 1-hr check-in time at airport [likely low estimate]; 3) zero flight delays; 4) zero road traffic on way from pac# school to airport 5) zero traffic from acc airport to acc school; 6) noted but not factored: 3-hr time change for Tree/Cal to acc and 1-hr time change for SMU to acc). So, assuming no extra check-in time, no flight delays, no traffic on road during departure and arrival, the overall average trip is 7 hours (min) to travel from Tree & CAL to ACC schools, and 5 hours (min) to travel from SMU to ACC schools. See chart for each pac# travel time to acc school. Tree max trip = 7.3 hrs to VT, CAL max trip = 7.3 hrs to UM, SMU max trip to UVA = 5.7 hrs. Tree min trip = 5.9 hrs to GT, CAL min trip = 6.1 hrs to Lvlle, SMU min trip = 3.6 hrs to Lvlle. You can essentially double this travel time to include return trips (not factoring jet streams). So, my point with Tree & CALs' sports teams playing against ACC schools, the excessive travel to&from west coast to all ACC schools is insanely wasteful and yes the stupidest thing I've seen in college sports to date. I know acc is trying to keep up w/SEC & BIG#, but this is just stupid.

we need to understand what he is unhappy about. Is it a 1/3 revenue share for the next 7 years? Is a variety of cross country trips? Is it because he believes he is now associating with people beneath him? The first two might not be unreasonable objections but, the third is probably no different than any conference they have ever been in.

But I can understand their angst though. They pretty much got the shaft but at least the ACC came calling. They and Stanford probably should have stayed with the other two and annexed a few other schools.

Stanford at least tries but mostly in women’s and Olympic sports
I think SMU is just happy to freely spend their oil money in a bigger conference. They’ve been stonewalled by the other TX teams forever.

Their men swam in the ASUN conference last year and won it handily. While most teams brought a team bus, they had rented Jeep Grand Wagoneers to shuttle their swimmers back and forth all week. They were also pretty much insufferable on the deck and caused a big commotion over lane space with one of the womens teams. Needless to say, the conference was very glad to see them go.

is fine with me for a number of reasons, not the least of which is they have put their money where their mouth is. The reality is they cheated, maybe even blatantly, got caught and paid a steep price. The less spoken of reality is they were not doing things any different than the rest of the SWC Texas schools who just got mad they were more successful at it and since that day they have worked to keep them down versus having to compete with them.

I remember the Billy Hite statement about VT boosters giving Bruce Smith's dad free firewood: "It's not so much the firewood as the truck it came in." Meanwhile, SMU boosters are handing out fat stacks of cash. We were never in that league.
