summary, not a huge difference between acc schools overall in terms of travel time when you factor in typical flight times [travel math], road distances from schools to their nearest airports [googlemaps] Assumptions include: 1) Tree using SFO [instead of SJC], and SMU using DFW [instead of DAL] -although I checked both sets and not much overall difference even if they did use 2nd airports, and CAL using OAK; 2) 1-hr check-in time at airport [likely low estimate]; 3) zero flight delays; 4) zero road traffic on way from pac# school to airport 5) zero traffic from acc airport to acc school; 6) noted but not factored: 3-hr time change for Tree/Cal to acc and 1-hr time change for SMU to acc). So, assuming no extra check-in time, no flight delays, no traffic on road during departure and arrival, the overall average trip is 7 hours (min) to travel from Tree & CAL to ACC schools, and 5 hours (min) to travel from SMU to ACC schools. See chart for each pac# travel time to acc school. Tree max trip = 7.3 hrs to VT, CAL max trip = 7.3 hrs to UM, SMU max trip to UVA = 5.7 hrs. Tree min trip = 5.9 hrs to GT, CAL min trip = 6.1 hrs to Lvlle, SMU min trip = 3.6 hrs to Lvlle. You can essentially double this travel time to include return trips (not factoring jet streams). So, my point with Tree & CALs' sports teams playing against ACC schools, the excessive travel to&from west coast to all ACC schools is insanely wasteful and yes the stupidest thing I've seen in college sports to date. I know acc is trying to keep up w/SEC & BIG#, but this is just stupid.
