Wide gap from Young to Pry
Young has demonstrated he can coach with little talent. Pry has never shown any results. I’d invest in Young and part ways with Pry (and Whit).

And you guys wonder why I take issue with so many anti VT people post.
Reasonable would have been, "CMY has years of experience and has shown that if adequately supported, he can put NCAA tourney level teams on the floor." Reasonable for Pry would have been, "We knew we could not go hire it all so we opted for inexperienced as a head coach but with a high position at a blueblood instead of a lower level head coach like Fu," With that we knew or should have known there would be growing pains and it would take patience we really don't want to have. We have to admit, CPB is doing a lot of things right but not all and maybe not enough yet."

failed on his DC hire, both of his initial OL hires, and maybe on his OC hire (that's reasonably debatable either way in my opinion).
Fail on all of those coaching hires and you're doomed. The fact that he still has a puncher's chance to right this ship is largely a testament to VT's required patience because of economics, mostly. Admittedly, this lingering puncher's chance is also a result of him successfully winning the offseason and giving us glimpses of a well run program even though we're not getting the results in season.

better than most. As Hokies we want us to be better than most but there is no "should be" connected to it. Here is the IS (or was)
VT either did not have the money to hire like you think should have been the VT minimum or they WOULD not spend it. Either way we got a hire in CBP that was better than average and he hired people who were mostly better than average. That is evidenced by at least 3 leaving for (better) jobs. Pry saw something in Marve that he thought would grow to be great.
Without having invested a much larger sum in the hire(s) and that may not have done it either, then the progress made is maybe what you SHOULD expect.

isn't about "should be". Lesser monied programs make good coaching hires all the time. See JMU as a recent example. Pry failed on those hires. PERIOD. Did VT's limiting budget increase the likelihood that those would be failed hires? Sure, I'll concede that, but, make no mistake, Pry failed at those hires.

screams mediocre coach. VT could have rolled the dice on someone like Deion, but they chose someone that they thought would be a fit based on relationships I guess.
I would love to be surprised but just don't see Pry leading the team to anything beyond 7 wins. Best case after Pry is let go after the 2026 season, they find a hot up and comer in the lower division to resurrect the program.
Heck maybe they should follow JMU around because they seem to really know how to pick winning football coaches!

The football program has gotten noticeably better every year.
First year we were horrendous
Second year we were non-competitive against good teams but beat bad ones
Third year we were 3 plays from 9 wins and competed in every game
If you can’t see progress quite frankly your opinion has no value

can afford to take a step back this year. We will see, not giving up on Pry but he lost a lot of talent and has no room to take a step back.

Our schedule this year is our toughest in decades, honestly maybe ever.
If we win 8 against the likes of NCSU, UL, FSU, SCAR, Vandy, etc that would be something we haven’t seen in a very long time.
Even the early 2000s teams really never played anyone outside of Miami and whatever random big east team won games but wasn’t that good

I stole this from GusDaMan on the pay board
2024 opponents record: 91-63, .591 win%, ranked 29th (based solely on wins/losses)
2025 opponents record: 75-76, .497 win%, would have ranked 102nd

Tech still did not beat a solid team all year.

in the country, The expectation that VT should be as good as the average Beamer team or the best of the Fu teams this fast is over the top.

Look at the combine performances and upcoming draft…and the portal destinations for some we lost…Pry had the talent to win 10 games. And won 6

We did have the talent for things to have gone better. Same with 2003 and 2006 with Beamer and 2018, 2019 under Fu. And, if you look all over college football, you will see it over and over. It happens here too.
Your take may turn out to be exactly right but it takes more than one season to really evaluate because consider our hall of fame coach.
1- He showed progress in year 2 and 3 that were further advanced than many thought realistic. Then there was a year that injuries and just the bounces of the ball resulted in a really bad record. Pry has one year with better results then the year with injuries and bounces of the ball going against him.
2- After 1992, CFB teams did not have that significant downside of the "bounces of the ball" or significant injuries really until 2014 and again in 2015. Now maybe the talent level during that stretch, (93-2011) was such they overcame some years that those bounces went against us but still they happened, even to Frank.
3- With CBP, he just had one of those years and way too many go slam crazy that he is a bad coach. That may turn out to be true but it is way too early to make that call.

We have a basketball coach in his six year with a record 4 games better than Johnson.
Pry embrace and instrumental in the nil for football
Young well he think nil is going zero tricks in spades
Like Pry, he is very ineffective with time outs and close games scenarios.
Bottom line MY in his six year not seeing any growrh in his program. No upside for the man who likes popcorn.

has not done anything noteworthy, in season when it matters, that makes me think he will win games. On the field, he's inspired me to think his time is doomed. I will say, the reason I'm rooting for him to have on field success is that I think he's a solid culture coach, a solid recruiter, a solid fan/alumni relationship guy. He's those things that Fuente certainly was not. I think the team has seemingly always been motivated with him at the helm. I think that goes to culture. If these coordinator hires are good, he has a puncher's chance to right this ship. BUT, I'll believe when I see it.

That's how I won money on the Hokies winning the Men's ACC basketball championship in 2022. He's 4-0 or 5-0. So he's got that going for him.
The season before last he promised his players a certain amount of NIL and then when it came time to pay them; the money came up short. As such we lost 6 of our top 7 players in the off season. 5 to portal 1 to graduation (Hunter Cattoor).
Then he had to scramble together a team not knowing how much he had to spend in NIL but probably among the bottom of the ACC. CMY vastly exceeded expectations for this year from any one who saw the turnover in the off season.
I think we should keep CMY until the NIL p4p Gov't settlement works itself out. He's used to competing with less resources at Wofford.
Now CBP, I'd like to see him get 6 years. Then each of our last 3 coaches will have gotten at least 6 years even though CJF and CFB had less than stellar years in there. Frank at the start and Fuente at the end. That has got to be attractive to a new coach. That you can make $5 mil a year and get 6 years to get your system implemented.
But the powers that be do not have the patience for 6 years. Even though Lane was sold out a bunch of games last year, the key donors want to see results this year or change.
I hope we'll see improvement to 8 to 10 wins but we'd have to see across the board improvement in coaching and we're probably not going to have 2 All ACC DL this year either.
So I'm in the 'wait and Hope' situation for Football. GL Hokies.
