C......C me in December for your final grade. Something could look like an
A on paper, but really be a F in application. I don't see any reason to get too high or too low on the hires because there are a lot of factors beyond VT's control.

No idea. Anyone who thinks they really do is peeing in the wind.
Having said that, I did state Marve was a terrible hire on multiple levels at the time…
Techsupport Techsupport
Exactly...
Everyone had MAJOR doubts about Bowen and Marve, and those doubts proved to be mostly well founded.

I think OC was an A+ hire (upgrade), DC a C+ (push). Overall net upgrade
From my perch, experience is all I have to judge by. Given the hiring disadvantages of.... a) Virginia Tech fallen a long way on the prestige totem pole and b) Pry very likely coaching for his job in 2025 ...then I don't think you can say anything other than Montgomery is (on paper) a walk-off homerun hire. With stints at traditional offensive juggernauts like Houston, Baylor, and Tulsa, along with many years head coaching experience, I honestly don't know we could have asked for a better hire. I was very surprised we could attract someone like this. I was expecting a son-of-Stiney type hire. On the D side of the ball, I'm not all that impressed, and to an equal and opposite extent to Montgomery, I was surprised we didn't do a little better. Again, this could be the Siefkes coming out party, and he just needs a chance, but based on DC experience alone, ....similar to Marve....I don't really see much. I haven't dug in much on all the position coaches, but my impression is they all look qualified. ** Edited by Techsupport at 3/6/2025, 1:58:06 PM

Defensive coach was a big upgrade
If you are going by improvement to the defensive coaching staff, give it an A. There is no understating how bad Marve was as a DC and LB coach. A mediocre DC (C+) would have been worth three more wins last year. Siefkes has put together a staff with guys with coordinator experience themselves. If he is a C+ next year, that's better than the F from Marve the last three.
Techsupport Techsupport
A guy with years experience as a DC in P5 college football would be an A
Siefkes had a couple very short stints as a DC at tiny Plattville and Wofford, then mostly NFL position coaching. I'd say his pedigree is only marginally better than Marve. I'm just comparing them at the point of hire. Can't compare Siefkes with zero games under his belt to Marve's game performance. Having said that Siefkes could fail, and we might never know his talent because he might not get enough time. Marve had enough talent to do better than we did. ** Edited by Techsupport at 3/7/2025, 9:35:42 AM

Experienced P5 coordinators are hard to find
Hiring Siefkes certainly has a degree of risk, but he at least has some experience and has been exposed to a lot more than Marve was.

We'll wait and see how they develop players and scheme but still NIL factor
Whit and Pry need to be constantly monitoring the coaching field for upcoming talent to backfill great coaches who eventually get hired away by $EC and BIG30 schools unless we can find a way to promote them to better roles and better $

Unfortunately, the most likely outcome is failure within the couple years
which means we're having this conversation about a whole new staff within 1 to 3 years.

Why is the outcome most likely a failure? Curious, thanks.

...because it's unusual to lose 20? starters and improve, and time is short

Mere speculation at this time. Revisit topic in December 2025.

"C" for change. We hollered for change and we got it! Upgrade on paper. OC
especially based on track records. Looks like more with no coach covering multiple player positions. IDK how granular you got to be at this level but more and better focus should be an upgrade. I'll optimistically give a B+ primarily based on the new OC.

You would like to think that
these two new coordinators will be improvements over Bowen and Marve. Recruiting has me still worried. Pry's hoping these two new guys will gel and it seems like everything coming together will be a tough ask, especially when we're heading towards make-or-break season possibly. If that's the best he could do, then that tells you what others think about Pry and the VT jobs. Pry has attached his wagon to this. I hope it works out for everyone.

I think the coordinators with the additional staff will be great
Coordinators need to be game planning. Let assistants teach the needed techniques.
E

It depends on how the staff works with the new coordinators
If everyone is on the same page, I would give it an A. Some disagreement, then a C. And if we have that cluster Pry had his first year, a solid F- ** Edited by EDGEMAN at 3/6/2025, 7:28:21 AM

Definitely some D coaches with coordinator experience
The suckitude of Marve and mediocrity of Bowen probably laid bare what needed to happen. We'll see.

I think Pry did the best he could with the situation
He got "some' flexiblity' on salary budget he's given, but not much. He was able to get help. However, no one can see anything until the Fall. Some interesting points Appears the OC and DC will be walking around coaches who manage their teams, they will not be on the road. Let's see how that works. DC new scheme with heavy safety engagement and a flexible scheme. Lets see if VT picks it up. OC... and line coach...if OC performs it will make the offense much better. Also, the vertical nature versus horizontal schemes. I guess the OC is the QB coach...... lets see. WHILE... got to get alot more wins....

They have proven to be inept, WB in particular. No amount of talk will make any difference. All that matters is results.
