I get that some of you think we should give a 1st time HC some time......
however the fact remains we should have never hired a 1st time HC in the first place. I don't believe most VT fans have the patience when we have had the long time issues with the football team, which include the later years of the Beamer era, and most of the Fuente era. The entire past few games have been a litany of incompetence, whether it be an inability to teach our kids to avoid penalties, or be it clock management, or be it a sheer inability to recruit.
When Pry was first hired, I expressed a cautious optimism, despite the fact we really needed an experienced HC. The general consensus from the media outlets as well as virtually everyone on this board was that he needed to hire experienced coordinators to balance out his own inexperience. To my shock, he hired 2 guys, Bowen and Marve, who were both completely unqualified for their positions but who appeared to be FOP's (Friends of Pry). Bowen whose only OC experience at the FBS level was a single bowl game, running someone else's offense. Marve, who was a LB coach who contributed to a mediocre run defense at FSU despite having 4 and 5 star talent, and with zero DC experience. He also had the rep of being FSU's worst recruiter. IE he brought NOTHING to VT other than requiring tons of babysitting and on the job training. Both coordinators have required tons of babysitting and taken away from time Pry needed to concentrate on other issues.
Hiring his coordinators was the first and most important decisions of his HC career, and he failed this task miserably. IMO he has exhibited poor decision making abilities, and people who exhibit these qualities inevitably continue to make poor decisions throughout their career. I suspect like Fu and to some extent Beamer, he will refuse to replace Bowen and Marve until the day he gets fired.
I might believe that things could be getting better except that our recruiting has been horrid. Pry's 1st 2 years so far have averaged a recruiting ranking of 42, which is worse than it was several weeks ago, and worse than Fu's average of 38. Over the past few weeks, there has been a litany of posts screaming how Fu left the program without talent. How do you plan to rectify the talent situation when the new coach is recruiting worse than the last one? As the season goes on and losses mount, watch for a few decommits and even worse ranking. I thought at the beginning of this season he would be gone in 4 or 5 years. I give him no more than 3-4 years now. He might even go down in a Willie Taggart like fashion, after 2 years.

the early signing period in December as well as the late period in February. You can't say they signed with Fu. Pry had a chance to change it as does every new coach, but was incapable. Mack Brown signed four 4 star players after he first signed with UNC in early December. As for the 2023 class, it is nearly full and continues to worsen as I predicted (41st as of today).

I keep asking myself, surely Whit has more critical thinking than 4 star recruits. Those comments from ACC coaches (albeit anonymous) about our staff in the preseason were NOT flattering. They even gave Clawson's staff the usual coach speak. Our guys got some serious shade. At the time I was like "woah". It seems like Whit wants to believe the storybook narrative of the second coming of Frank Foster more than the hard facts that great coaches produce. It reeks of desperation. It's beginning to look like the only people sold are the Hokie fans. If Pry and his staff had such low expectations, why in the hell were they and Bud dunking on the previous staff and players as they were flipping burgers on ACCN and touring VA high schools? Surely they are smarter than that. I really thought they were going to get in here and get this bunch playing with more discipline and heart. They can only blame themselves for the swagger creating a fall from grace pretty quickly.

As a HC with absolutely no experience being the head man, Pry should have brought in coordinators who were not also learning on the job.
As someone who only had experience on the defensive side of the ball, he should have hired an experienced, innovative OC, rather than the TE coach from last year's absolute worst NFL staff.
The team does not appear to have improved, from an effort or execution standpoint, from what we saw in last year's debacle of a bowl game. Returning VT players are grading out lower than they did last year. Players who transferred in (Wells, Blue) are playing worse than they did at their previous schools.
I'm sorry, Pry is a likeable guy, but at this point he and his learning-on-the-job staff are simply not getting it done.

And how do you know your choice would have taken it? Did he tell you?

Fuente really bought himself some time by getting off to a good start (4-1)
Including a ranked win on the road. Compare that to the 2-3 start by Pry in what looks to be a much easier schedule.
Yeah, I'm trying to be positive on the Pry hire, but he's given us next to nothing to hang our hat on thus far.
I hope that we can start turning the tide in recruiting in-state. But losing games that everyone expects you to win (ODU) doesn't help no matter what connections are being reestablished with VA HS coaches.

That will work for sure and yes we have plenty of moron fans

Firing Pry early is a non-starter.
We just need a much better performance.

a hint of an improvement or silver lining at this point. I was a sophomore for Beamer's first year and this feels even more hopeless than back then (granted we had MUCH lower expectations then, but still...) This is painful and seems to be getting worse, not better. It's hard coming up with a new adjective to describe Tech's performance every week. I'm running out of words like sad, pathetic, dreadful, etc...

I was a Freshman In 87. BS in 91. MS in 93. I attended most of the home games during those years.
Liberty Bowl felt like Super Bowl to me.

This time has to work. This program can’t sustain another round of failure for years in this ever changing landscape.
I don’t see another rebuild for this program - if this try bombs this program will likely never recover to any level of true P5 success.
This isn’t a blue blood. VT can’t hang like that. We have to pull for this guy… no choice.

The contract length of Pry is an audition period to get in the B1G or SEC
ACC's GOR and TV deal are too long for the ACC to implode right now. But by the late 2020s, the picture will become more clear what schools are going to the big time, and which will be figuratively and literally reduced to G5 status.

Look at other programs who also did it recently. Norte Dame, Oklahoma, Texas. It’s not crazy to take a chance on a top P5 coordinator who can also recruit. And when you look at the VT budget, this is a much better option than getting another G5 coach. Because we can’t afford to poach a good P5 coach.
As for recruiting you are flat out wrong. Pry does not have two classes. He inherited the first class and had no input. His second class is based on less than a year of relationship building on behalf of VT. Other schools have been talking to these top kids for years. We can’t just change minds when the kids had not seen our new coaches and program in action. This is not the nfl where you can just buy talent and upgrade instantly. Recruiting of high school kids is a process that takes time.
Try giving the staff more than 5 games before you act as judge, jury and executioner.

hired, and let's not forget UGA with Kirby Smart.
The argument we should have hired an experienced coach is not a good one by those that use it. Most schools are going the coordinator route

and been in this business a long time, so need for learning curve should be at a minimum. Plus Whit has given him more $ for assistants and a whole lot more non-coaching staff members for analytics and recruiting. Just wanna see some progress, not a step back. Ahem....Kansas anyone?

Experienced head coach ( this is at least the third rebuild for Leipold) to year one for a first time head coach is not really fair. I have no idea if Pry will succeed, but if he goes 2-10 this year he will match the Kansas standard you reference.
