MY is a great coach, many will miss him when he’s gone.
I don’t think we will be lucky enough to have him around much longer…Read the Seth Greenberg article Will posted recently to remind yourself it’s HARD to win here. It’s exceptionally hard to win in the ACC. We are middle of the pack, which is frankly where we would be with any coach most years over the last 15 year. Buzz was Buzz, but I think an upgrade at this point will be a shot in the dark. Y'all need some prospective. John Feinstein’s last book on college basketball would be a good read for many here. This is much better than the days when we were just trying to qualify for the Big East Tournament.

what constitute a great coach?

A HC who gets the most out of the limited puzzle parts he has to work
with. CMY has done just that. Do you think Brad Brownell has become a top 20 coach the last 3 years because he's just now hit his peak as a HC? He's been given the cash to buy really top notch free agents and now looks like Dean Smith. same coach he's always been. Better puzzle pieces.

Seth Greenberg was an average coach who only looked good because we had
to endure Ricky Stokes before he took over. VT has the longest consecutive home win streak in the history of Virginia college basketball…41 straight. So don’t tell me we can’t win here. My take on this team is we have a lot of really talented players …but they all seem to be role players. We don’t have someone to take over at crunch time. Part of our problem is also key injuries to multiple starters that have disrupted the team’s ability to jell as a unit. Finally, this team most likely has the worst 3 pt shooting average in some time. All in all, I’m disappointed…I had high expectations …these guys do play hard, so we shall see. 🤔

Coach Young is a very good coach
Not sure I would put him at the great/elite level. Of course there are not but so many of those guys out there. We do not ignore our basketball team (though last year was kind of close) but as we have shown we are a football school when we first look to resources for a program. I think this could very likely be a tournament team without injuries to Lawal and Johnson. We had better depth this year, but not the kind that can overcome starter injuries of more than a game or two. Johnson does so many things well and we really miss his defense on the wing.

Very good? You clearly have low standards for coaching

i wouldn't put him in the very good coach category... good coach, yes
a very good to great coach would not be at wofford for 30 years

Completely Agree!!
Without the major injuries with Tobi & Tyler resulting significant number of games missed, this team likely has 2-4 more W's!

With that attitude should we get out of the ACC
I don't think the ACC wants a freeloader ! We should have some amazing leaders to establish a vision to get this program going .

CMY is a great guy and represents the university well.
Between the NIL issues and having to deal with agents and crazy parents, there is just something missing with this team.

I get the sentiment - but this isn’t the same program
How does any program move forward when they just want to be tethered to what happened 20+ years ago.

UVAs recruiting hasn't changed, even after winning a national championship
Maryland went to the Sweet 16 last year, hired a coach many on this board idolizes and now theyre the worst power conference team in the nation There just aren't many schools that have changed their stars unless they've done so across decades with the same coach (Gonzaga, and to a lesser extent Villanova) Blacksburg is going to be Blacksburg. You're going to have to overpay players just to get on the same playing field as your peers. Would a splash hire co opt some cache in the short term? Maybe. But across a full recruiting cycle theyre going to win just about as many games as any other VT coach has won. Gonzaga is going to plummet when Few leaves/retires. Villanova already has. UVA isn't going to all of a sudden land McDonald's All-Americans with regularity even after a championship. It just doesn't happen. I said it years ago but VT as a program, regardless of who is HC is a 50% NCAAT program. Leave someone in the seat long enough and they'll make the tournament about 50% of the time and be on the bubble most of the time. That isn't a Mike Young thing, or a Buzz Williams thing or a Seth Greenberg thing. It's a Blacksburg thing. VT did a great job landing James Franklin to use his brand recognition from PSU. He was smart to not target many non-PSU recruits/transfers because he's the sell...not VT

I, for the one, am sick and tired of you…
shading Blacksburg. You are welcome to your opinion, of course, but with you it seems personal. I recall, when you were coaching, you said you would never take a job here because it would not be good for your career path. Well, where did your career path end up? If you are not coaching, it’s certainly not because of Blacksburg. Frank Beamer had no problem with getting great players to come here. And Buzz had as much success as anyone but he wanted to go where the grass is greener and hasn’t had as much success since. Finally, Blacksburg did not cause our multiple untimely injuries to starters and certainly is not the reason our so called 1st round draft pick has under performed. If Blacksburg is the problem, why do you even bother to come on this board ? I suspect it’s because you enjoy pounding folks to salt and Will won’t put a stop to it. Stick to X’s and O’s and quit painting Blacksburg as where it would be the place that you would give the world an enema! 🤯

I’d happily take “VT is a 50% NCAAT program.” But that’s not what we’re
...getting. Over the last four years, I’d argue three rosters were tournament-caliber, and it looks like none will make it—and a couple of those NIT years weren’t even real bubble teams by the end. This year again: with better talent than both those NIT teams, we should be playing for a seed, not talking NIT. At some point the “Blacksburg is hard” stuff stops being the explanation—it’s about results with the talent you have. And on recruiting: compared to the “hope we qualify for the Big East tourney” days, it’s night and day. That’s why I don’t buy “it’s the same program”—the talent on paper is better (and has been for most of the past decade), so the expectations should be too.

If VT gets in this year it'll be 3 in 7 years...
Including 3 in the last 6 years You stated you'd "happily take" that...so surely you'd be perfectly content if VT makes the NCAAT this year I have my reservations that your sentiment is genuine...but alas, that's the reality

A question: If VT provided the team, and were able to offer the same level
NIL, that a U of L, or Clemson/UVa is able to offer players, would "Blacksburg" still be the difficult place to bring in more talented players it is now, or could the cash available for NIL actually elevate the program to be able to earn an NCAAT bid 2/3 out of every 4 years and be in the top 5-6 programs in the Conference?

7 or 8? nothing. Here's an example: Clempsun has played 11 payers tonight
against Cal. All have scored except one. Seven seniors, two Jrs. and two frosh, It takes a lot more cash than VT gives CMY from NIL monies to sign and offer PT to all 11. NIL is unfortunately, the haves, haves some, and have nots.
