When I tell you that Clemson does not care about basketball...
And that non-football schools will have a large advantage

So I guess a school doesn’t need to care about basketball to have a good program. So let’s stop using the “VT doesn’t care about basketball” as an excuse for mediocrity.

The better question is why is VT lacking so much in resources behind a school that continually shows it doesnt care

then what’s the evidence they don’t care?
Seems you’re talking out of both sides of your mouth. On the one hand they don’t care because they are choosing to increase their investment in football. On the other hand, they invest 3x as much as VT.
It’s a convenient way to argue:
You: Clemson doesn’t care about basketball!
Me: And yet they win. So stop blaming a lack of commitment to basketball as an excuse for failure!
You: But Clemson has 3x the resources as VT!
😂😂😂

I provided direct data with quotes showing Clemson doesnt care. And VT had less resources than Clemson...
...and your tiny little dinosaur brain arrives at the conclusion that those are contradicting statements
You've been gone all summer while VT was getting good news and pop up with 2 replies to the same post to try and argue about something you know nothing about.
Go back into your hole, little troll...

You’re always so thin skinned when someone disagrees with you.
What quote did you provide that shows they don’t care about basketball? They care far more about football because football is king from a revenue standpoint. But no where have you demonstrated that Clemson doesn’t care.
If they don’t care about basketball, why do they have 3x as much invested as VT?
Where did all that money come from?

What on earth would give you the impression I was upset over the lacrosse thread? Someone made fun of lacrosse — I suggested they probably have CTE. That’s banter.

My nephew was born and raised in SC and went to Clemson
One Thanksgiving recently, I told him that I like Clemson's basketball coach and he agreed but then said "but nobody really cares about basketball".
Thing is, VT really only became a football school in the 90's when CFB started that magnificent run. You could argue based on what was going on the 60s, 70s and 80s, that we were more of a basketball school - we certainly enjoyed a lot more success in basketball than football in that time period. I would also opine that a greater percentage of VT sports fans care about basketball than Clemson sports fans.
Me? I like VT football - I love VT basketball and that was true even during our huge football run. I'm curious about the upcoming football season but I cannot wait for the upcoming MBB season.

Basketball is faster paced. Basketball is only 2 hrs. I'm with you. I like football and especially love a Saturday in Blacksburg. Football is almost an all day thing. I get more excited to watch an actual basketball game though.

In the new world order, the sports that carry the weight get the money.
If football carries 80 percent of the athletic budget then 80 percent of budget goes there.
This is pure accounting and running the business. If your business is 75 percent one sector and its making a profit you keep investing in the product.

Into R&D, and have let your other smaller lines whither on the vine. Sound familiar???

And saw a reduction in their budget
I very much understand this is a football crowd on a basketball message board, but youre not going to convince me that taking money from a successful revenue sport is going to make any meaningful difference for a football program or any chance at a P2 or TV revenue
We are talking 900k...that doesnt close the gap, much less put them in any sort of advantage

It doesnt matter if you win, but rather bringing $$$$ to to that athletic dept. and simply basketball (no matter if it wins 30 games or not) generates only limited $$$, The arena sits only 10k, generally. While look at all the funds that football generates...ALSO football has national championship branding, the rest well..
(In response to this post by GCHokie34)

You dont take from one to give to the other and think that makes any difference
If you want to have a conversation about taking from non-rev to give to football then take it to those boards, but there is zero financial argument for torpedoing your only other profit generator...none

Clemson is positioning their 🏈 program to gain admission into the BIG 2
Basketball, as much as I love it, won’t turn the needle for the SEC.

ITs just business, like the NFL. And college fans have emotions and passion, and dont see the $$$ and business management. Clemson solution, get more money from rights and get clemson to be a national brand and maybe
You are seeing it in NC as well..
(In response to this post by GCHokie34)
imo a direct result of the ACC lawsuit settlement
Football TV ratings are the biggest part there. Clemson needs money to keep up with SEC, having the best players is the best way to make sure they get great TV spots, and are in the Playoffs every year.

Kentucky would be the only school I would guess that might put more into basketball but it wouldnt be larger than 5% more if at all

Same theory - invest in football now to create a bigger pool of money for everybody later. The difference is Clemson actually has a proven football program. If VT has proven anything over the last 10 yrs it is this. They have no idea how to run a football program in this current environment.

So not sure that strategy is worth anything
(In response to this post by VT ChemE 1986)

Of course it requires that they move to a P2 conference in order to cash in.
(In response to this post by GCHokie34)

But in practice what we see is they took the football profits and cut the basketball budget to intentionally be lower than their peers
So anyone trying to sell Brownell on this being a strategy to somehow make basketball competitive would have to think he was an idiot

If there is an upside it will be many years out. This certainly does not help his job security.

He just went 18-2 in conference. They do not care about basketball. They cut his funding. He has gone through losing seasons and no one cared.
He's there until he doesn't want to be there. Which could happen for sure

they kinda care about football now, but obviously bball is what they value. Will be interesting to see (if we do) what %'s they allocate to those two programs.

They’ve got money flowing into football for sure. The way they’ve immediately got their softball team competitive, their baseball team just hosted a Super Regional for the first time and they’ve won 2 ACC titles in the last five years after not winning one in 60 years…. All of that on top of financing the best hoops team in the NCAA last year…. Duke is all in on sports, period, right now.

the 4 point difference for the mens bball program equates to about $700k....can get a good bball player for that amount. But so can the football team.
