we don't have enough ACC talent...even in a year when the talent level is low.

Which makes me wonder, if UNC fires Hubert Davis would they, could they possibly come after Coach Young?
Remember when they came after Coach Beamer?

... different animals at UNC. While UNC, especially back then could tolerate hiring a VT football coach, there is no way in Hades UNC, especially now, would hire a VT basketball coach.

minimally competent in getting a decent roster for Mike Young. My guess that Mike Young would immediately be welcomed many places if he left VT. Let's hope the Whit gets his act together. It amazes that our fans tolerate him and no one ever hears a peep about what Sands is doing to fix this.

I'm not sure there's a ton Whit could've done differently once it got to the point it was last year.
I think Whit needs some blame in allowing Pry to pick his own coordinators without parameters, and thus waste the investment into the football team, but the basketball v football is a lot more on the shoulders of Triumph...including not auditing how the money was spread to form a functional football team

treating their operation like a State secret, the degree of blame for Whit and/or Triumph is unknown. While, for public consumption, Triumph wants to be perceived as independent from the AthDept, in actuality, none of us believe that is entirely accurate. Somebody in the AthDept must have some sort of input to Triumph for them to have made the decisions they made. Having Kevin Jones and his wife on the Triumph board begs the questioning. Kevin was on the board that selected Whit as AthDir, and Whit then hired him as a special assistant to the AthDir.
And because of the way Triumph is legally structured, no publicly available auditing of its operations are available. The entire structure is rife for corruption. So, while I can agree with your phase, "...but the basketball v football is a lot more on the shoulders of Triumph...." in theory, in practical application, the preponderance of the blame doesn't necessarily lie with Triumph.

tied to the school, and maybe VT is outgunned financially, but Virginia is a very wealthy state and I often read on these boards how people's kids are on "pins and needles" waiting to get into VT, who would be more likely to contribute. I am just sick of places like WVU, Kansas State, etc. appearing to be better-resourced and better managed. That shouldn't be happening. My guess is that 1) Whit needs to communicate what the shortfall is and 2) maybe a lot of people just don't trust giving him the money because there is no transparency and they doubt his effectiveness. Which begs 3) "How do you get people to trust the collective as well?"
However it just seems like many other schools with a tougher hand are managing things much better than VT is?
Am I right? How does this get fixed?

We’re trying to get into the P2, the Big 12 is comfortable where they’re at and the schools are investing in basketball because that’s where the brand is.
VT is trying to rebuild football to become a more attractive financial asset when the ACC dissolves, the foundation we have is much less secure.
One element to consider is the white collar alums that VT produces don’t live anywhere near the school, getting anything out of an investment is very difficult. KC is only 2 hours from Manhattan Kansas. WVU is closer to DC, Pittsburgh, and Columbus than VT is to Richmond

With the Virginia/Tennessee v NCAA ruling, NIL can be brought in-house starting July 1. That's when revenue sharing can begin as well.
So going forward if there is a mistake in NIL allocation it's 100% on the AD and his/her department.
But leading up to last year's decision to funnel dollars away from bball that wasn't the case. The landscape was (and is currently) dominated by collectives. Schools are still choosing how to structure their NIL process after July 1, but that hasn't happened yet. I suspect most schools will have it in-house however with collectives supplementing.

concurrence until more is known. They've been saying for months (since the VA law was passed) that they were working on implementation of the new law, yet nothing has been forthcoming. I don't know if that's a product of the usual lack of communication from the AthDept, or if they're floundering in their policy making.

Other than speculation wrt how they've handled Rev share and in-house NIL
I'm not sure they could even competently do so with the rescinding of the Title IX memo being like 1.5 weeks ago, which will greatly affect the comms piece of things, if not the distribution as a whole.

"I am just sick of places like WVU, Kansas State, etc. appearing to be better-resourced and better managed." I don't think the schools you mention are better "sourced," unless you mean our fundraisers aren't up to snuff. Since, Lu Merritt, the HC has had TILI Lansden, Brad Wurthman and now Danny White (the last two were interims only). None were professional fundraisers, although TILI claimed to be one, which he was not. @RJHokie constantly brings this up, and he's correct. We're leaving a lot of money un-donated.
To me, the bigger problem is the lack of communication from Whit (Captain Obvious here), and his well-earned reputation for poor money management and allocation. There is also a problem with the collectives, and the secrecy surrounding them. Who in the collectives decides who gets how much, what is the process, what is their overhead, how much are they paid, etc?
If you want NIL contributions to increase, the shroud of secrecy needs to be lifted. Whether the new state law re: NILs will have an effect remains to be seen until June/July of this year.

is screwed up and these guys do nothing. In most cases a decent President would have lit a fire under the AD's rear, but Sands just seems like an odd guy. What is he paying attention to? He looks like he never played a sport in his life or went outside his house, while growing up. This has gone on way too long.

maybe they are in closed sessions, the tough hard questions and demanding action plans as well. Would LOVE to hear Mehul's take on this.

a couple of big recruits, D. Hall, maybe, that he went to Bowden and asked for advise on how to handle superstars. Not sure who Coach Young could ask...

I'm told he doesn't need the money. Gotta get creative! Having bootstrapped a few startups, I know the feeling.

Plenty of basketball left to salvage a season!
I don't think we cannot sustain with a mediocre seasons .
But apparently per many articles we cannot afford to fire anyone. No worries for being fired! Money very tight in Athletics!
Attendance way down in basketball. I would be concern about the direction of the program .
Go Hokies finish strong!
