He wouldn’t need to play Rech or Young major minutes if those guys were still here. Those 4 starters playing together won 18 games last year. There’s no reason to think that they would not have won even more games this year with the ACC being down as it is. The last thing we need now is CMY to step down. We need money for players. What you are seeing right now is what happens when you don’t pay to retain your best players. It really is that simple.

Rice is obviously an ACC guard. Maddox would be starting for us. He wouldn't be great, but he would be a lot better than what we have. MJ Collins is ACC level, though should be coming off the bench at this level. But he would be starting for us and would be a big improvement. Nickel starts for Vandy and is averaging double figures, and would be doing so for us. And obviously the gambling thing absolutely killed us at point guard right now. I think this staff got their evaluations of Young and Rechsteiner wrong, and it's killing us. But main the issue is that ACC caliber players at those positions, who once played for us, are now playing for somebody else.

Interest in driving to the basket. He mostly just shoots threes off screens. Not being effective right now. He does appear to be a good passer and defender

down 3's and score within 12-14 feet. With no PG that can do that ( Hammond was developing into that guard) he's not getting the ball, even after effective screens. With a serviceable PG, he should be scoring 12-15 points a game. A lot of this team's problems go right back to not having a true pg.

do a deep dive in to stats which are way less vague than “ find success “ However I looked at Nickel and Collins. And there stats really showed not much progress or regression by either. PT was close to the same which can screw stats obviously. Nickel is averaging almost 2 points per game more and Collins is averaging less than 1/2 point more. So they really are producing at abut the same level they were at Tech. I’m feel sure Collins is playing good D and Nickels is not just as they were last year. Really hard to compare Rice because he was constantly hurt in Blacksburg so if he hasn’t been hurt then maybe has “ found success “ . Have watched Pedulla play a couple of time he seems to not be trying to do to much now as he did at Tech so there’ s that. Alleyne got in a perfect situation and won a Natty although his PT was greatly reduce I would say he “ found success” . Maddox kid of moved down to lower competition level and usually that equals finding success. But as player grow from year to year get stronger, smarter more experienced their production and stats naturally improve. Don’t think any of these players development say anything good or bad about CMY. Just says he recruited some pretty good players that other people offered more money to . Impossible to keep everyone happy in this current NiL, TP era.

See Tony Bennett. Is anyone on here prepared to say that Storm Murphy, the paper boy, is an ACC level guard that everyone recruited? We won an ACC title with a system. The system days are over for now.

Our kids under this staff who stay, generally, do not improve. We have had 1 or 2 successes and 8+ failures. Btw, I owe the board a mea culpa. I loved Rechsteiner and thought he would be the man so thus far that has not happened. I also loved Pedulla (and still do) but he did not improve under this staff for obvious reasons. The pieces they provide to the PGs are not adequate.

I think a few others could be argued as well. Mutts. Pedulla improved from Freshman year and was quite good but got forced into a role beyond his means by injuries to others. Poteat has improved a lot. Issue is mroe about losing players before they can develop, not all of which is fault of staff.

PER really drops off after the first five players listed below, and you'll see no guards in those first five. I quite like Hammond, but of course, he's hurt now. Really happy for Rodney and how he has come on recently. I'm not sure why Schutt isn't doing more... probably poor PG play is hurting him. Rechsteiner and Young... rough.
