Wouldn't we at least want a body in there for practice or emergency situations? What's the benefit of not using it for a year? I have a feeling I don't understand how this works...

Players are in the portal because they want to play.
Not to sign with a school to be a practice body. If that were the case, we could have just kept Haynes.

Hopefully the current 4s and 5s will develop enough to be solid next year (2023-24) but I suppose that would be portal action if we had to replace those.

I defer to others with first hand knowledge, but it seems he’d at least have to improve his shooting.
He seems like the prototypical 4 in this system. His athleticism and skill set seem to be more like Mutts than anyone else on the roster IMHO.
