Question about Sasso's RS status.
Pulled this from the NCAA website...
12.8.3.1.7 Exception -- Men's Wrestling. In men's wrestling, a student-athlete representing a Division I institution may compete in up to five dates of competition during the student-athlete's initial year of collegiate enrollment without using a season of competition. Competition in a conference championship tournament, the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, or any other season-ending championship event shall not be exempted from counting as a season of competition.
I was under the impression it was a total of five matches as opposed to dates.
Did Sonny exhaust one or two dates of competition wrestling at CK last weekend?
Thanks in advance.

And if he wrestled both days of a 2 day event that would count as 2 dates. Is it clarified in the rules somewhere?

There have been RS's preserved where a guys wrestled in a multi-day dual event and it counted as once.

I thought a tournament counted as 1 and a dual counts as 1 but I could be wrong.

True... and two-day dual events count as one as well

I understand the value of a shirt, especially at the higher weights but some guys seem to develop better right out of the gate. I’m in the camp of pulling pulling his shirt, especially if he gets more ranked wins before the 5 event criteria.

But I disagree. He has so much room for improvement. He did not wrestle full time in highschool. He’s very good, but there still is a lot of room to grow as a wrestler and as an athlete.

the reality of today, not a guess about what the future holds.
If he's physically ready and is the best option at 197, put him on the mat. It's not like that keeps him from improving. And while I get the logic you're proposing, I think the way guys develop is just a crapshoot.

Theres plenty of examples of guys that have not performed as well by their 4th or 5th year as they were their 2nd or 3rd. I think a redshirt is not always going to get the team 4 quality years of starting. If they are our best option to start as a true freshman then I think they should be in the lineup. I know it depends on what the kid wants also. (Lewis,McFadden,Chisko, Bolen, Epperley, Ventresca(?))

If he wants to redshirt for some reason, I think you have to honor that

It’s a case by case basis. Burnout, injuries etc do impact most wrestlers to some degree. Some guys do need the year to develop but others have the technical base, athleticism and drive to start as true freshman. The old way of thinking, is well, old.
It’s a tough call though for the coaches and I’m glad it’s not me. If Robie starts true freshman. history has shown that by March, they are ready to challenge for a spot on the podium
Go hokies!
