Josh Humphrey Lehigh AA is rumored to be in the portal
He was a 57 guy last year but if he bumped to 65 and has an interest in VT, he’d be a good get too. Plus, he’s a Parkersburg, WV guy and Haught might have some pull

I don't see how he has any eligibility left.
Unique and unfortunate situation because he never used his actual redshirt, but was hurt (knee surgery maybe?) the "free" 2021 season and I guess had to take a medical redshirt. 2019 - wrested full season & NCAAs 2020 wrested full season & EIWAs - NCAAs cancelled 2021 - medical redshirt 2022 - wrested full season & NCAAs 2023 - wrested full season & NCAAs Unfortunate he missed 2020 NCAAs, and then had to medically redshirt and couldn't take advantage of the free 2021 season, but looks like he exhausted his four years. If you somehow gave him another year, a lot of 2020 kids that lost their postseason would have follow up questions.

Winter and spring sport athletes on 2020 rosters got a 5th year

Think David McFadden, Vincenzo Joseph, & Mark Hall would disagree with you

Basketball players got a 5th playing year, why wouldn't wrestlers?
Hunter Cattoor, Liz Kitley, Cayla King are all playing Year 5 this year for VT Basketball. Mason Parris wrestled for 5 years for Michigan.

That was 2021. 2021 was a free year for all, 2020 was not .

guess it depends on whether 2020 counts as a full year
many athletes in many sports got 5 years, because 2020 was not counted as a full year.

2020 was counted as a full year I think
2021 was the freebie year.
Vienna_Hokie Vienna_Hokie
just guessing, know nothing, but if he is in the portal, he's eligible
so possibly he's getting a medical shirt since others got a free year and he didn't?

Looking more closely, I don't see any way he has eligibility.
4 conference tournaments. 3 ncaas. None were in the freebie year. You don't get an extra year just for being in college in 2021. It sucks for him that his medical redshirt overlapped with the free year, but it is what it is.

if he is in the portal, he has eligibility, right?

Maybe he's hoping to be granted an extra year?
But I just don't see it. You get 4 years to compete. He competed for 4 years, without any kind of medical issue shortening one of those 4 years. Athletes competing in the 2021 season are the only exception, with that year not counting against their 4 years. 2021 was not one of his 4 seasons. It seems cut and dry that he is out of eligibility to me.

You're misreading the rule
Those who qualify for a covid year get 6 years of eligibility to complete 4 FULL seasons of competition. Humphreys is eligible for the extension because he had eligibility remaining in 2020-21. He has completed only 3 FULL seasons of competition because NCAAs were canceled in 2020. Thus, he has 1 season of competition remaining. Very similar logic behind Mekhi's eligibility for a 5th trip to NCAAs.

Mekhi gets a 5th go because he Olympic Redshirted when NCAAs cancelled
From my understanding, that year counts as a full year for everyone that competed, and is irrelevant to the extra eligibility for athletes competing during the freebie covid year. Freshman debuting during the covid year who weren't affected by the cancelled ncaas have the opportunity to wrestle 5 tournaments. A guy like Starocci could potentially be a 5 timer.
Vienna_Hokie Vienna_Hokie
that would be my theory, assuming the rumor is true, he is eligible

Yes, please.

Josh is a good one
During the last couple of years he has wins over Franek x 2, Ed Scott x 2, and Peyton Robb. He has 2, 4-3 close losses to AOC and finished 3rd last year.

Josh @ 165?
Would hate it for Connor, but Josh is a pretty thick 157 guy, if he considers going 65 and wanted to train with some great guys.... he would be rolling with Connor (65), Bryce (57), and Mekhi (74) as his guys one weight up and one weight down....that's a pretty nice selling point for a final run.

In my opinion, Brady has had his fair share of chances. If Tech has an
opportunity to upgrade at 165, the coaches should not hesitate to do it.

Don’t see us as a landing spot for guys like him
Coach Robie has said finding NIL money for guys in the room is more of a priority than giving it to transfers. A position I 100% agree with. A guy like Humphrey is going to command money on the open market. While he would be a great addition I think putting what NIL money we have into the guys already committed to the room is a great position to have. I don’t see this free agency in wrestling lasting long so I think Coach’s approach is right for the short and long term.

Yeah, I have mixed emotions on the whole transfer portal.
I definitely think it’s a great option for athletes and coaches too. Some schools are definitely reaping the benefits from this option and it definitely changed roster management for the coaches with pros and cons. Interesting times for sure. I have zero inside knowledge if Humphreys is interested in VT but your points are spot on. There aren’t many other programs with our caliber of training partners for a 165 guy.
