Yes, they have Vega winning 149
Valencia 2nd, Van Ness 3rd. They had Jax staying at 33, and Stanich winning 41. They are borderline calling Vega having a 4X Cael career. Some of it might be TIC but I'll say it. I watched Bo beat him (FS) and had several close matches last year. I think Ech pushed him to rideouts, close with Hardy, close with Nasir twice, close with Jack. I'll say it and it will probably age very poorly but I think Vega will not win 149. The guys that have careers like they are suggesting are much more dominate with bonus rate. I would be surprised if he was at 50%.... I do know he is darn near impossible to take down, but I like the chances of the other 3 to get a TD, especially our guy with his attack rate. Also SVN might give up some, but he will get a TD on Vega.

And to be honest, I think they slightly underrated VT
The pressure for a trophy is going to be real as this has a chance to be a special team. With that being said, I think most of the predicted finishes for VT guys are a tad on the low side. While nothing is guaranteed, I think many will see our guys having higher finishes than what they predicted.
JD had:
Eddie 7th, obviously can miss the podium but I think many will have him higher, including me
Seidel 3rd, seems about right but many of us see him as a finalist depending on seed
Bo 2nd, expectations are high but he certainly could win it, especially in folk
Caleb 4th, this is where Hokie nation was most surprised, I know I believe he can win it or be a finalist
Gaj originally had him R12, now 8th, tough weight but I think he has a great chance at another podium
Nininger R16, I like him to surprise many this year that don't know how good he is, the weight will be the question
Burton R16, I think again, this seems to be a floor not ceiling prediction, he is podium capable
Desiante R12, seems about right but he has skills to produce even more
Sasso R12, I like him to bounce back from last year's tournament, he has seen it now and can be more prepared
Jimmy R16, this class lost some guys but gained some good ones too, I like him to move forward but probably about right
JD's picks were definitely on the lower side for VT IMO. I'm not suggesting we will out perform all of his predictions but I like several of them to be more floor than ceiling.

Young man is impressive, thanks for sharing
I assume good parenting, strong guidance from people in his life, and some God given attributes. Bo carries himself with the highest levels of competitiveness, but remains humble, with class, and respect for others including opponents. It is impressive to see someone that young with these qualities. Glad he is a Hokie and represents us.
edit: I should say anyone regardless of age with these qualities.

Glad to hear Caleb was there and thanks for posting
With missing Final X 3rd, glad to hear Caleb was going live. I know it was posted he wasn't injured or seriously injured but with all the Bo and Melvin buzz, myself included, I am greatly looking forward to seeing Caleb's final college season. I think he will be hungry and aggressive. Thank you for sharing.

Real/medalists already get a massive advantage.
Love your knowledge and opinions, just respectful discussion. My opinion is USA Wrestling already lets returning medalists not wrestle at the US Open, obviously not at World Team Trials. That is more than enough incentive and advantage for a returning Bronze. No chance to get upset, injured, worn down, multiple weight cuts, etc. An automatic trip to the following years' US Freestyle 'Super Bowl' for finishing 3rd at worlds the prior year (Not denigrating world 3rd, that is an amazing accomplishment) but that is plenty of advantage....not to also get to move the event, imo. Maybe the idea presented that is fair was Bo gets to pick the time and place once Real is cleared. I fully understand this is beating a dead horse, just a final opinion.

They don't move the Super Bowl if the QB is sick
I know this is a bit hyperbolic but the competition date is the date. USA Wrestling wants the best team as well as protects medalists, and I understand the importance of sending our best, but If you aren't available, you aren't available. The World Championship dates won't be moved. I would feel the same if the roles were reversed albeit I admit I'm more interested since it is against Bo. As far as the Trent, Macc situation that was agreed upon by both and I believe USA Wrestling gave them the wrong date a year in advance and both agreed on the change with Trent's wedding and both attending. Planning training, scheduling, peaking and fairness need to play more of a part. Bo could be a world member in 3 divisions, this could effect other prep and championships. Agree with HokieToph. I also know it has been done before but I don't like it.

And Melvin made the finals at 70
Strong VT representation.
True on the Robie we trust. The man gave up an organ for one of his wrestlers' father. If that doesn't say he's a great person that anyone would want to be in battle with I'm not certain what does.

Desanto has threatened to kill his teammate and an old lady NCAA official
While I agree that is not even close to the level of sexual assault, but threatening to kill your teammate, reported (Schrieber), threaten to kill an official thus missing the walk of AA's (being pulled by Brands) and trying to break the arm of an opponent with a kimura (I think Seth Gross) late in a match he was losing are not exactly exemplary behaviors. Some heat of the moment stuff and was younger but not superior either.

Iowa continues to damage a storied brand
Money and being the bluest of blue bloods will always save them some but .. they are losing the track record of developing guys, they still get great recruits but I think they are outbidding other schools and likely overpaying. Then recruiting over blue chippers or good guys after short or almost no opportunity. Money, tremendous history, and world class facilities will make up some for poor chemistry but at some point they might implode. Maybe Bo (I'm sure VTs package was significant) so I'm not foolish to think we aren't in the game but it seems VT gives a couple of years before you are challenged or recruited over and team cohesion is at the forefront. Plenty of opportunities given before a decision to switch or try to upgrade and the needs of the team, individual choices, all relevant in the process.

Any rumors on Hunter Garvin?
I have no idea if we are being considered, if he would be a fit from a team chemistry perspective etc. However, with Jaxon going 74, that changes our interest..may not eliminate interest with some shuffling but with what I believe is a solid move for us to move Burton to 74, I don't see a one year maybe slightly better advantage being in our best interest long term and team cohesion stand point. If we could convince Jaxon to stay at 84, he becomes the #1 target for us imo as many have said. As far as Garvin, he has to be way up there as well at 65 on our interest hierarchy. 2 time AA (6th) has some injuries but has beaten several accomplished guys. Mac deserves a lot of credit for moving up (probably was great to eat, but difficult to keep up horsepower wise) to fit a lineup need, however, Garvin is on another level, only 1 year left but likely placement points and even a bonus win In there. Has anyone heard any interest either from us or from Hunter?

My literal #1 realistic target, darn, not at the expense of Burton though
Match for Match maybe Jaxon gets him a touch more right now but Burton is so promising and I like him at 74, with all those years of eligibility left. Jaxon was my most wanted (realistic) 84 target, as I've watched him live at a few duals in College Park. Unfortunately, if he wants 74 I don't see him as a fit at VT. I think he even wrestled 97 one year, maybe it was a Gabe Arnold situation where he was needed up. Disappointing but wish him well, seems like a good young man.

For what it's worth FLO show and Cornell message board
CP fairly confidently saying what I think and hoped for next year. Eddie, Seidel at 33, Bo, Caleb as the first 4. It's been discussed at length but if Aaron can pull it, it is the best option imo. Again, once Caleb grads, we now have Garcia at 33 and Seidel 41, Bo to 49.
Secondly, Cornell board indicating Meyer is visiting UNC and NC State today. If he is considering ACC schools, we should be in the mix, not sure it works perfectly but a RS for Gaj and Noah up seems like the way it could work. Shapiro won't go 65 imo.
I also forgot Campbell as a 33 competition, he improved quickly.

Schubert would be a big get at 165
Not the huge name but if we land him he is a mid to bottom AA contender imo. He has wins against Wask, Steed, Gaitan all high quality guys. He only lost to Kennedy 2-1 so he's very good and with multiple years left. I agree with donjfs, he is a 65 imo and would be our starter next year. I have Burton as the likely 74. I think he's certainly a top 10 guy which would be a great addition.

WOW, You have me jacked up
That front 5 would be almost too good to be true. Your lineup brings up the fact that in my opinion, Seidel needs to stay 33 one more year if possible. I know it is his sacrifice but seems possible for 1 more year. The 65kg weight for freestyle is concerning but it could be not wanting to cut year round. Everyone can go up 1 after Caleb finishes. The all-in year of 26-27 already had me excited, this would be ridiculous.
As far as Tanelli, he is the only coach I have not been able to speak with on a personal basis, he sure seemed like he improved the room, so thank you and good luck to him.

I think only guys inside the program know
or maybe they wanted to see how the season played out before committing to anything, then the shuffling to begin. You may be correct, If everyone moves up and Campbell gets back at 33, I would suspect a RS for Gaj, maybe Nininger can move all they way to 65, Burton 74, Desiante/Bullock at 84, unless a surefire upgrade is available. I don't think the coaches bring in more R16 type guys at 84 and just let the competition and team dynamics stand. Not trying to be mean spirited at all, I like Desiante and Bullock but neither has shown to be more than 2-2 guys at nationals. They are both solid, non-liability lineup guys, but probably not big point producers at nationals. I like the idea of getting Gaj and Noah in the lineup along with Aaron, Bo, and Caleb at the same time but probably hinders on Seidel making 33 again. Bo could go 41 or 49 imo, and I could see Caleb at 49 or 57. All this without considering Melvin at 57/65, but I think that will be after Caleb graduates.

Agree. Question
As emhokie, hiking, and you all suggest. I think we all believe Seidel at 33 one more year might be a must. Since the Caleb RS itβs a must to get Bo in now. Bo goes 41, Caleb 49. Is there any chance the staff and Noah were ahead of us (of course they are) and can grow to 65? Gaj might RS or I think goes 57. Which would put Burton 74, Sergio to 84 with maybe a transfer to challenge. I like the way it seems we let our guys go and show what they can do before we bring guys in.. caveat is if you can get a surefire upgrade (Jaxon) you pull the trigger. If not, competition and keeping the team chemistry seems like a good strategy. My question was to the group. Is NN a big guy who could grow to 65? Of course when Melvin comes, more strategizing.

I think i read someone predicting Provo to NC State
If they lose VRob, makes sense for Provo. He might have a real attachment to Hayden as coach. HH seems like a big re-get for NCS. Heβs always carried himself well, good competitor and for what itβs worth likeable. I wouldnβt be surprised if he was a good coach too. So maybe we keep a very good 125 in the ACC, just not on the same program.

The President knows
This will be challenged and overturned. I think it is to get the ball rolling on common sense dialogue. 7, 8 year guys pushing high 20s is not in the spirit of collegiate competition in my opinion whether it benefits my school or not. An age or year of play seems more enforceable over the transfer rule. I liked the thought of 1 transfer then another would cost a year. Iβm sure itβs not fair to some but every year free agency is not healthy either imo. I think many of us donβt like the rent a player mindset but know itβs part of the game now. It would be nice to solve some of these issues and he was getting the discussion going.

UNC or NC State
If he loved Hayden as his coach, I could see NC State. I don't think they have anyone in the wings at 33 and if so could probably use a redshirt. Redding gone too.
Wrestling Board
4 mo ago
He was good at 49 but won't be in the lineup there again imo
Obviously Caleb and or Bo will run that throughout his tenure. I guess Bo could go 41 for a few years but I doubt it. Bo won't have any trouble with 41 next year imo if that is where he lands but 49 for his last few seems likely. Like you guys said, Seidel will go up, giving DC 33 if he holds that. Gaj will have to put on strength or 57 so maybe a redshirt next year and Noah gets in. I am unsure of his size but I'm sure there is a plan. Them Melvin comes and more to figure out but good problems.

It's going to be pure excitement
Eddie, Seidel, Bo, Caleb, Gaj. Really impressive first 5 if that is how it goes. Does anyone on this board know if Nininger or Gaj could be viable at 65? From what I watched, Gaj is a 57 going 49 or can definitely not have to suck down as much. Is Noah big for the weight or will he wait until Caleb graduates to get in? Just thinking future especially when Melvin comes, who is a 57/65 imo. I think Burton can go 65/74. Desiante or Bullock at 84, and Sonny, Jimmy on the back. I'm jacked to see this team go. VT will be a big storyline next season.
Wrestling Board
4 mo ago
VT will get a ND invite imo
One of the biggest story lines next year will be Bo and his adjustment to college. He's really good, and an insightful listen. There will be other story lines played out like is OSU closing the gap on PSU (PSU won't attend imo) but VT stands to be a large player in the national wrestling news. VT has some exciting talent, a lightning rod of people wanting to see Bo become a legend or fail, as well as the Melvin going to "Jax." I don't think he will but I'm not certain anyone knows for certain. If all our guys hold weight down, Seidel 33 etc. Melvin could be an immediate factor at 57. If he's a 65, maybe you let Mitchell graduate before starting.

I see Iowa in Crookham's future
Yes, he has not been able to stay healthy for 2 years so that mix might not work well at Iowa. However, they lose Ayala and according to Wrestlestat have the #256 133 set to go next year. I would be surprised if that is who starts, as they have plenty of NIL. Some will always seek money and for some they do want to be there. When heathy obviously a high AA, title threat guy. Agree with other posts, we have too many good guys down there. I wouldn't say impossible for us as it would solidify Seidel going up, Bo 49, Caleb 57, and Campbell to backup but I don't know what injuries he has either. If they want to bump guys up and DC is healthy that is probably the mix. I think VT will focus on anyone in the 74/84 range and work to keep most of the lineup in tact.

We should be better at a tournament, dual will be competitive against Stan
Stanford without transfers in or out. Of course, things can change with transfers and lesser known guys making big jumps, however...
25: Provo, that is as close a match v Eddie
33: Knox, not competitive v Seidel, but the favorite if we have DC go
41: Consiglio, good, probably not close v Bo or Seidel
49: Valencia, just won a title, competitive against even Caleb or Bo
57: Cardenas, competitive and maybe favored v whomever we have Gaj, Nininger
65: Parco or Garvin, competitive or favorite against Church, maybe one of the redshirts goes up 2 weights?
74: Norman, favorite against or close, Burton
84: Wojiekiwiez, competitive v Bullock
97: Posada, 1-1 v Sonny, very competitive
285: Duthie, Jimmy should win comfortably
Many toss ups, and has the possibility to be very close or even bad if they win the close ones. If we win the 50/50s it could be lopsided but just pointing out Stanford has a good guy at almost every weight and is a solid dual team. Not trying to quell any excitement as I believe we have potential to be a better tournament team with high flyers at several weights. I am on the bandwagon that is excited for next year so much that i was not as disappointed at the closure of this season. With that being said, in a dual, Stanford is absolutely a threat.

PSU individual champs, agree with Elberto
25: Lilledahl, likely. Hoping Eddie gets it done, would be close if they meet, but I'll say yes
33: Blaze, possible, I'm going with no, too many other great ones, winner of Seidel/Jax wins it IMO
41: Davis, No
49: SVN, the favorite but a slow start against Joy won't work, I'll say no
57: Duke, wrestling his best, yes
65: Mesenbrink, yes
74: Haines, Minto and a few others have a shot, I'll say yes but close
84: Welsh, has an "easy" path to the final but Sinclair, McEnelly or even Ferrari if healthy, so I'll say no
97: Barr, yes
285: Mirasola, no
I got them with 5 champs which is still absurd. I wonder if we can entice them for a home at home. Not saying VT would win next year but it could be a legitimate out of conference challenge to them. They seem to cupcake schedule early season then wrestle tough B10 duals second semester. They also won't national dual so if we get invited they won't be there.

I think you guys are spot on regarding your responses
If Seidel wants and can stay at 33 next year, I think DC sits a year. The same stuff we've talked about, Bo-41, Caleb-49, I think Gaj shirts or can definitely go 57. If Nininger gets in the lineup at 57, then Gaj shirts next year. Be interesting if he has a big nationals run, if so its tougher to sit but it obviously happens. If Caleb goes 57 next year, then Bo could go 49, DC back at 33 as I think Seidel is pretty big and could go to 41 with no problem. I expect Melvin to be in the room but not doing a "Jax." Burton sure was promising this year too, expect him in the lineup next year as well. As great as this time of year is, I cannot help but imagine Cassell next season with a good opponent coming in, going to be electric.

Ridiculously simple observation on Sonny
He looks great and he will get rewarded with a good seed at nationals. I know there is a lot more training and nuance, but to me, when he is constantly moving his feet, that is when he's at his best. I think earlier in the season he appeared more flat footed. I know, not a great technical analysis but it seems when he is confident, quick and smooth it is when he is in constant motion.

Great post. Ayala thoughts
Yep, his demise was premature. Bad start of season and waxed by Jax but heβs still a threat to high podium. Much more offense than Byrd. Byrd is tough with great defense but he wonβt be able to keep up with Davino, Blaze, Jax or Seidel imo. Not his fault but his schedule was less than stellar. I have those fab freshman taking over 133. I think Davino gets Blaze this time at Bigs. Agree, Caleb v SVN is a good one but a slow start against Henson is a death wish. I cannot wait to see the hitman back in orange and maroon.
