Posting History (211)

Why not "punch it in"?

Avoids the double entendre but fits perfectly with the drumbeat

I think Burton (and others) have been training w/ Marstellar and Burroughs

Based on the pics from Burton's Instagram. Looks like David Carr was there as well. Maybe at JB's Academy?

Halfway there

The 'match the million' campaign has crossed the halfway point (link below)!

I had the same thought about Jeter and Carini.

But Flo likes to move guys up the rankings during freestyle season and then let them fall back down during folkstyle season. Gives them an excuse to change the rankings more often, which drives click volume. ** Edited by samistone at 6/8/2026, 7:34:52 PM

Yes

Ridge Lovett and Zain are too old. If Caleb wins the true third match, the U23 world team spot is his to accept or decline.

Recent flip from Pitt

His only loss this year was to Waters in the PA AA state tournament. Was a bit of a late riser on the recruiting boards. Currently #61 on Flo's big board for the 2026 class. Was ranked as high as #4 at 175 pounds. Currently ranked #15 at 190 pounds. Should be a good addition to the room at 184 pounds.

Final X

No question, it was a tough day with Caleb losing to Zain and Seidel missing out on the opportunity to wrestle Davino for true third. Looking ahead to Final X, we'll see Bo v. Real Woods (for the 65kg spot on the world team), Caleb v. Robideau (for true third and a spot on the national team at 70 kg), and James Green v. David Carr (for the 74 kg spot on the world team). And at U20 Final X, Ryan Burton will wrestle for a spot on the junior world team. The skill level in the VT wrestling room at the middleweights right now is really something. Go Hokies!

Seidel - True Third

If Seidel beats Desanto (again) and Jax beats Davino, then Seidel faces Davino in a true third match at Final X. I'd really like to see Seidel get his hands on Davino.

Hard to make an apples to apples comparison

In 2026, donations to SERTC from Silver level donors and above totaled more than $700K. They're counting all donations to SERTC and all donations to Hokie Club earmarked for wrestling over the next year as matching donations. I think they'll hit the $1M matching goal with room to spare ... which is awesome. Great program, great fan base. ** Edited by samistone at 5/11/2026, 6:16:15 PM

Updated this morning

We're now about 11% of the way toward the matching goal. Impressive start to the fundraising campaign.

Not sure either.

But I think throwing the brick was a mistake. The Penn guy was gassed, and he got a second wind during the stoppage.

To qualify for a medical redshirt

Isn't one of the requirements that you're not eligible to use a regular redshirt?

Agreed. I prefer ...

... "Hello. My name is Aaron Seidel and I have been sent here to destroy you."

I particularly enjoyed the advice the Wisconsin coach was giving

his wrestler after Sasso turned him. I could hear him yelling "Get off your back!" and "Get out of there!" Good stuff.

To be fair, the person Robie named was

The team's first AA after Robie was hired. The program had some AAs before Dresser and Robie arrived.

One nit ...

It's not possible for a sudden victory match to finish with a 4-2 score on a takedown, because the score before the takedown would have been 2-1 in SV ... which means the match would have ended. So I'll take EV over NB 4-1 in SV in the semis :)

NCAA Seeding

There's a solid case for seeding EV, AS, CG, and SS all in the top 3 of their brackets. It probably won't happen, but they've earned the right to be in the conversation. Of course, the realist in me says they'll seed EV to face Volk in the quarters and Spratley in the semis, AV to face Jax in the semis, and Sasso to face Barr in the semis. Looking forward to seeing the brackets.

Yes, on Flo

Not sure Mac needs any more matches

He was 17-8 against D-I competition. Now he's 19-8, which puts his winning percentage over 70%. And I suspect they were hoping to get Ethen up to 15 total matches at 157 pounds so he could get an RPI ranking, but the high-schooler making it to the semis ruined those plans. He'll probably forfeit out, but I don't think he got what he came for. ** Edited by samistone at 2/22/2026, 12:15:07 PM

New coaches' poll (link inside)

Seidel definitely has their attention. Our guys' rankings look fair to me. Gaj was definitely dinged for the loss to the Hoo.

Devin beat Bajrang Punia

Right around the same time Bajrang won his first senior level world bronze medal. It was a big deal but probably flew under the radar a bit in Blacksburg.

This is why I think it makes sense to pull Gorman's redshirt this year

He's improving rapidly and, barring injury, it's hard to see a starting spot for him next year. Wrestle this year, redshirt next year, and see where we are in '27-'28.
