We have Big Cat, Mullen and Ferrell
Flo has Mullen #1 (senior), Parker #4 (junior)...wow! They are a year apart..maybe with creative grey and or redshirts this will work. One thing for certain, guys will have great training partners to push each other if everyone stays.

Walk on in football and commitment is for wrestling per 247.

Can he actually ....
do that? Physically is not the question but, whether as a scholarship athlete he has to count against football if he walks on.

sounds like committed to wrestling and dabbling in football
If he starts showing promise on the football field, then revisit if that's what he wants
Nortazhokie Nortazhokie
Someone asked that question on 247 and the answer was
he would be on football scholarship only if he plays in a game.....which my thought would be why would you go out for football if you weren't expecting to play in a game?

A bunch of guys on the roster never play.
4th stringers on the FB team are on scholarship. FB redshirts don't play.

Not sure.....
that playing in a game trips it. May be on GameDay roster but, like you said why go out if intention is not to play in a game. Also, if the requirement is not triggered by play but, some other roster designation, then the coaches have to make the decision on taking a counter you do not expect to play.

The story said he was a preseason NJ All-State DE pick. I guess he can ball
"Playing more as a standup linebacker at times, St.Joseph senior Jimmy Mullen was a factor early in the game with a sack and multiple tipped passes at the line of scrimmage. Those batted balls seemed to ruin the Griffins' offensive timing." ** Edited by Va AandM at 10/24/2022, 8:00:45 AM

I was aware of....
that. Post was talking more about the thought process involved around a scholarship athlete that plays two sports.

Seems like they would use the Cole Beck path and use a FB scholarship
since FB is a full scholarship sport and has 85 available.

I think they....
would have to I'd he has any intentions toward football.
Nortazhokie Nortazhokie
I was wondering the same thing. I'm not sure but
Evan at 247 just posted that it was confirmed that was the scenario playing out.

Thought on Ferrell, Question for the board
I am not familiar with Parker's frame etc. Is he a guy who could get to 97? If so, that is another option to avoid the log jam and maximize our team. If anyone is familiar with him....as a big 285 or a tweener 220 type? I think Mullen is pretty big and if playing football, he won't be doing much cutting, one would think. Thanks in advance.

TJ might have something to say about that.

VTwinsdad OP
True Flyer, I was thinking TJ to 84
I thought TJ would go 84 after Bolen, he's shorter and super powerful. Sasso taller to go 97. All I can say is I'm liking these 'problems' of several stud options. Walz and Haught might actually get tired rolling with all these guys.
Hokie Flyer Hokie Flyer
I am thinking a couple of years down the road.
But definitely stacked with options 84-HW. And the 25-33 seem stacked too. Back to the bookends. Need to fill some depth in the middle. Got BA for a couple and Henson, but could use a few more in the middies in the next classes.

We need to figure out 165 and 174 going forward
Mekhi has the option for 2 more years, but might not use them. Hipolito could he a good one, and Brady still has a chance. Ulrey too if 157 isn't a permanent move. But the options are a bit lacking compared to the wealth of talent at other weights.
H
Hikinghokie
Sounds like 84 is the plan
That seems like a big cut to me, but seems like the plan. Regardless, our coaches are building a ton of depth at a bunch of different weights
H

Stewart at 84 and Sasso at 97.

Sure would like to see your excel depth chart posted!!

No, I don't think so...
He's been purposely beefing up to be a proper heavy, and that's where his future lies. He's walking around at 240 or so. I don't think he'd be the wrestler he could be at 97. Plus...I'm pretty skeptical about how this football/wreslting thing will work out for Mullen. If his love truly is football, then by default wrestling is going to be an afterthought. I mean, he won't even join the team until the second semster (assuming we get back to playing football in December in January in the future...lol).

Don't think Ferrell can get to 197 .....
he has been growing into his heavyweight body last couple of years. If none of these 3 guys decide to move away from VT, then the weight looks like this: 22-23 Season: Catka as a R-Fr Starts 23-24 Season: Catka as a R-So (3 year starter, 4th year in program) Starts and Mullen redshirts 24-25 Season: Catka (R-Jr and 5th-yr in program) or Mullen (R-Fr) Starts and Ferrell grayshirts 25-26 Season: Mullen (R-So) as starter and Ferrell Redshirts 26-27 Season: Mullen (R-Jr) or Ferrell (R-Fr) Starts 27-28 Season: Mullen (R-Sr) or Ferrell (R-So) Starts 28-29 Season: Ferrell (R-Jr) Starts 29-30 Season: Ferrell (R-Sr) Starts ** Edited by hokietony at 10/23/2022, 11:46:47 AM

Gotcha
HOKIE MAGIC HOKIE MAGIC
This really will be interesting.
Sasso is coming in at 197? can he get to 184? What about Stewart? he 184 or 197? Lots of options. Mullen is obviously a world class wrestler at heavyweight so the football angle will be also interesting to follow. The last guy I remember actually playing a football snap at VT then wrestling a match for VT in the same academic year was Cory Bird...someone might remember one more recently. Bird also a Jersey guy. Lots of fun options rolling into Blacksburg!!!

Another NJ blast from the past…
Doug Easlick was the starting heavyweight during his freshman year before he decided to focus only on football.

Did Andrew Miller....
actually wrestle any matches? I think he came for both football and wrestling originally.

Media Guide for 2010-2011 says he went 1-0 in the 2009-2010 season.
Didn't say who he wrestled, but I think he only wrestled one year. He was listed on the online roster for 2010-2011 but was not listed in the media guide.

He did one year in Chapel Hill but it wasnt against UNC. Maybe Campbell
HOKIE MAGIC HOKIE MAGIC
Yeah, I don't remember him wrestling either.

Seems like Luke Owen was going to
But don't remember if that was before or after bird and if it happened. I remember John Rivers going bball to football and Jeff King and Bryan Randall going the other way BUT basketball was really bad then.
HOKIE MAGIC HOKIE MAGIC
I don't remember Owen actually wrestling, but could be wrong. Good call.
Nortazhokie Nortazhokie
Bird and Owen were at VT the same time, but I think Bird was a year or two
ahead of Owen.
