Great news, thanks for sharing.
A fully committed TJ would be dangerous and exciting, but Im not gonna get too excited at this point and instead just be happy to hear that heβs both back in school and wrestling and seems to be happy.
On the Noah front, has he really gotten so big that making 157 would be a concern?

Chris Penny
He was a fantastic story of development over his career. This is just based off memory, but from what I recall he did not even make the state tournament in high school until his senior year where I think he finished third or so. He was very athletic and you could see promise even as a freshman as he could get to the legs of just about anybody but just couldn't finish. Despite that promise, I think he only had a couple wins as a freshman and not sure he ever qualified for nationals until his senior year. And he went into NCAAs his senior year unseeded (that was before they seeded the entire bracket) and pulled off a couple huge upsets against Iowa and Penn State to make the semis before finishing sixth. Really great story.

Random Diaz fact that popped into my head for first time in many yearsβ¦
I remember that he committed very shortly after the tragic April 16 shooting and I think his visit may have been the day before. Obviously there were way more important things to be worried about at the time than how the shooting would impact wrestling recruiting, but I remember thinking that having someone decide to come to Tech right after the tragedy was a good sign that the shooting was not going to change Blacksburg being a special/great place to be a student.

Yes, lost to both in freestyle last summer
He commented in a recent interview that he feels like he has something to prove since he hasnβt beaten the other top freshmen at the weight. Hopefully that changes next week.

OK State and Ohio State as well (at least per Flo)
and a few listed with 9 so could end up with 10 with at large-bids. Good company to be in for sure.

But he has a huge history of ducking tough competition...
like wrestling in college opens as a high school freshman, in the Senior World Championships while still in high school, and re-classifying and wrestling in college rather than finishing his senior year in high school.

Also teched Cortez who took Davino to overtime.
Thatβs one of the most interesting results for Seidel this year since he lost to Cortez this summer in freestyle (along with losing to Blaze, Davino and Larkin). The fact that he flipped that result so convincingly - including getting the only two takedowns, not just dominating on top - makes me very interested in seeing how rematches go with the other freshmen studs.

Bassett and Miller matches today
Bassett and Miller both had interesting matches in the PA dual finals against Faith Christian.
Bo beat Bachman 3-1. Scoreless first with Bachman wrestling very defensively. Bo cut Bachman in the second and then finally broke through for a takedown. Bo chose down in the third and got ridden out. Was a strange choice for Bachman to not cut Bo at some point to try and get a tying takedown since he never came close to getting a turn. As amazing as Bo is, that is the second time Bachman has ridden him out this year and Joy did as well at a college open, so bottom is an area he can probably improve on a bit.
Miller bumped up to wrestle Singer (currently ranked 4th but at one time ranked first) and won 3-2. An early penalty point was the difference with neither guy getting a takedown, though Miller was in on Singerβs legs repeatedly and just couldnβt finish (probably due to the size difference).

I think it depends on how you measure the "best" freestyle win...
If the question is just who has beaten the opponent with the best past credentials, it is hard to argue against a win over a past world champ. However, and not to take anything away from Caleb at all, it is hard for me to rank a win in a bronze medal match at a ranking series event over Mekhi's gold medal win at the U20 world championships, just given the significance of that win. To me, it's a bit like ranking the best collegiate wins of all time for VT wrestlers. As good as Vito was, I wouldn't rank Latona's dual win over Vito in the same category as Mekhi over Joseph or Caleb over Gomez for NCAA titles.

Matches against teammates donβt count on recordβ¦
so assume coaches were trying to ensure Mac and Jaden could get 3 wins that count for qualification purposes.

Mac, Sergio and Jaden all into finals with 2 winsβ¦
Miller still has his semi to go after winning in quarters. Looks like plan to boost these guysβ winning percentage a bit is working.

Interesting registration list for Appalachian State Open Saturday...
Not sure, obviously, if the weather will change plans for the tournament overall or our guys' ability to travel for the tournament, but in addition to a bunch of the freshmen (Seidel, Gorman, Burton and Weader) and back-ups being registered, there are also a number of veteran starters (Miller, Church, Desiante, Bullock and Sasso) that currently show-up on the registration form. Not surprising that the staff would want to get some of those guys some additional mat-time and/or wins though will be interesting (weather permitting) to see how many guys actually wrestle the Stanford dual Friday night and then again at a tournament the next day.

Wasn't sure I was remembering correctly but just checked...
and Seidel's semi-final opponent (Gallagher) actually had a win over Dillon Campbell when they were both at 125 last year. Dillon has obviously improved tremendously since then, and Gallagher ended up going 1-2 at NCAAs, but a pretty solid semi opponent and another chance for Seidel to make a statement if he dominates.

Looks like Seidel & Burton (and others) are wrestling at F&M open tomorrow
Link to seeds below. On quick look, I see Seidel, Burton, Gorman, Weader and Parker F.
For Seidel, makes a lot of sense that we would want to get him several matches this week since Midlands was his first competition and looks like there is good competition there, including a top 10 kid from Army among others. For Burton, assume he is wrestling unattached and coaches are still deciding whether to r-shirt him or not.

Gorman shout-outβ¦
Heβs become a bit of the forgotten stud of this yearβs class due to the early successs of some of the others and the question of whether/where he could fit in the lineup going forward if Bassett goes 141 and/or Seidel or Dillon bump to 141, but he put together a really nice tournament, including avenging his loss to the Harvard kid (who pinned him at Southeast Open) and beating a R12 guy (Chappell) in the third place match. Great to see.

Carini wrestling up at 190 at Reno tourney of champions,,,
Won his three matches today by tech, major and pin to advance to the quarterfinals. Looks like there are a couple top-20 ranked 190 guys in the bracket so should be some good competition tomorrow.

I thought it was especially cringe...
when he asked Melvin questions about why he hasn't changed his last name after being adopted and whether he will change his last name. Those are super-personal questions and totally inappropriate to throw into this type of interview.

Not exactly the same, but Robie left a head coaching job to come hereβ¦
and Tech was not the national power that ii is now when he left Binghamton to join Dresser. By the way, always thought it was a fun fact that Pat Pop succeeded Robie at Binghamton.
Anyway, agree it is unusual to leave a head coaching job for an assistant one - especially here where Tanelli also has Frayer ahead of him - but really speaks well for how the program.

Whenever I find myself getting overly excited about this line of thinking.,
I have to remind myself how probability calculations work. There is a reason only one team has had all ten guys all-American and only a few have had nine. Even if you assume that a team has 9 guys each with a 50/50 or better chance of making all-American, itβs still an incredibly small chance of them all making all-American. At least some βcoin flipsβ go against you even in years where most stuff goes your way. For example, our remarkable 4th place finish -which included a bunch of guys outperforming their seeds - still included Dance and ZZ not making the podium.

Would be a little weird if he keeps wearing the singlet around town..,
now that heβs out of eligibility. But if you ask me heβs earned the right to dress however he wants!
