Can't say I understand the move on his part
But I'm stoked to have him coming on board!

How about this, VT has a fantastic program!
That has great coaches, great kids, a great campus, and also we do have some folks giving some coin to the program! Some of our fans gotta start appreciating what we have and act like we belong because I am real sure the kids believe it. This isn't a direct shot at you by the way...VT is wrestling school! Need a magnet saying that!

For sure
But I would be surprised to see someone leave a head coaching job even to be the third coach on staff at Penn State. That said, our program is fantastic, Robie is fantastic, and Blacksburg is fantastic!!

I can't imagine we will be able to retain both Frayer and Tanelli long term
One of them would be a likely candiate to take over for Robie when he hangs it up, and the other would likely be a head coaching candidate elsewhere. We all know Frayer has been approached before. I would love to think we can keep them both for a long time, but I would be surprised if we did. Let's enjoy it while it lasts...we have an outstanding coaching staff in place and outstanding recruiting classes coming in so the future is very bright.

VT has a great reputation in the wrestling community as well.
That wasn't always the case. Good time to be a fan!

Might not want to be associated
with Columbia for obvious reasons

Obvious reasons? What would those be that most universities currently don't
have to deal with?

If you have a TV, turn it on one of the news channels...lol
that stuff has been going on for months, although not to this extent. NYC on it's very best day is not for everyone. And when you look at cost of living, a substantial pay decrease still could be a net raise in terms of money in the bank at the end of the month... ** Edited by JoesterVT at 4/22/2024, 8:20:12 AM

He may not want to raise kids in NYC or its suburbs
Life is expensive up there, especially if you have to send kids to private schools.

Also, we don't know wwhat he was being paid vs. his cost of living
He may come out ahead on assistant coach pay combined with SERTC pay vs. Blacksburg cost of living (which is about 1/2 NYC's)

Tanelli lives in Hoboken, NJ

The Athletic area is away from Campus and not in the best part of town
When we were on a recruiting visit there in January, the athletes had to take the subway from Campus to the athletic facilities to workout, lift, etc. It's not in the best part of town either.

Completely incorrect (details inside)
First and foremost, Baker Athletic complex at 215th street is for the outdoor fall and spring sports. Indoor sports have their facitlities on Columbia's Morningside campus on 116th. For those sports that operate out of Baker, students are welcome to take the subway, but Columbia has a round the clock shuttle service that runs directly from the Morningside Campus to the complex. The shuttle buses are the only trucks that are allowed on the henry hudson parkway. As such, it is an easy 20 minute commute each way between Morningside to Baker. As for the immediate area around Baker (Inwood), it is actually quite nice above broadway. on the other side is industrial stuff. Inwood is about to go through a major neighborhood development.

I would have responded to this sooner but…
On my walk home from dinner I was mugged when I got distracted watching a homeless guy teach his pet rats how to protest.
N
Nafeikoh
You too?
As soon as I get done teaching my boys to burn the flag and how to be trans to spy on girls in the bathrooms, I plan on going to a protest too!

Pathetically childish post.

A little puzzling, but let's hope it is not a precursor
to filling a vacancy that we really do not want. Hope it is just backfill to Brewer. I mean Columbia is doing OK, maybe this is just a case of Tanelli wanted some National accolades on his resume that VT can provide over Columbia.

Even if Robie was planning to retire
Frayer would be the obvious hire to make. I could see being concerned about Frayer leaving for a head job, but who leaves a head coach position to be Associate Head Coach in Waiting? Glad to have him, but it's a weird move on his part imo.

Coleman Scott moved from HC at UNC to assistant at OK state…
And he left a power five program to move to OK State for a better assistant coach job. Tanelli leaving Columbia is a much less drastic move than Coleman and living surroundings and cost of living probably have a bigger part in Tanelli’s decision.

I'd expect Coleman Scott is Ok State's HC as soon as next year
Leaving for his alma mater as a coach in waiting isn't shocking

Not exactly the same, but Robie left a head coaching job to come here…
and Tech was not the national power that ii is now when he left Binghamton to join Dresser. By the way, always thought it was a fun fact that Pat Pop succeeded Robie at Binghamton. Anyway, agree it is unusual to leave a head coaching job for an assistant one - especially here where Tanelli also has Frayer ahead of him - but really speaks well for how the program.

Probably should’ve read a little farther down before I posted lol…
Another fun fact about Robie leaving Binghamton was he was the first head coach after they reinstated the program. So that AD was batting 1000 in their first two hires. ** Edited by Hokiefan94 at 4/21/2024, 10:11:56 PM
