My guess is that UNC and UVa will be allowed to go to the B10, but not SEC
and that FSU ends up in the SEC. I think the VA and NC politicians have to make it very clear that they didn't give VT and NCSU a good chance to land in the top 2 and those schools aren't desired by the B10 due to their lack of AAU status.
I think that ESPN can fold up the ACC in 2025, but they don't want to lose FSU to the B10. I know that FSU is really mad at ESPN, but ESPN has lots of leverage in this situation and will end up steering FSU to the SEC. I think the SEC prefers VT to NCSU and perhaps even over Clemson. I think that South Carolina and Georgia really don't want Clemson in the SEC. Maybe we could get paired with FSU in the SEC. I think a lot teams UF and (FSU if added) don't want the Canes in the SEC.

"1 think the VA and NC politicians have to make it very clear that they didn't give VT and NCSU a good chance to land in the top 2"
The Virginia AG has made it clear he wants both schools (Tech and UVa) at the same level and is willing to flex to make it happen. Members of the General Assembly have said the same thing.
What have politicians done to hurt Tech and NC State?

What makes you think they won't do it again?
Kilgore's suit against the ACC slowed their expansion process down long enough to allow politicians to leverage Va Tech into the conference.
Here are some quotes from the last go around. "Just to give the governor backup cover, we went about the task of developing Tech and Warner a secondary plan of attack. The politics were easy. There are four times more Tech graduates in Virginia than UVA graduates and Tech’s fan support is much more rabid.”
"The legislators from the New River Valley at the time included Del. Jim Shuler, a Democrat, and Del. Dave Nutter, a Republican. Saunders says they were persuaded to introduce a bill. Here’s what his book says: “The bill was simple: The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech, the state’s two flagship programs, would have to be members of the same athletic conference unless both agreed to a different scenario.”
"Saunders wrote in his book that when he took political soundings among legislators, he “found that getting support for the legislation was as easy as dynamiting fish. To ensure the bill’s credibility, Warner agreed to sign the legislation if passed.” Saunders writes that a public rollout of the bill was in the works. That never happened because Tech President Charles Steger “called to tell us to call off the June 25, 2003, press conference announcing the legislation because Casteen had called and told him Tech was getting an invitation to the ACC.”
Shuler agrees that if the bill had become necessary, it would have likely passed. “Absolutely,” he told me"

and I have known Dave "Mudcat" Saunders for about 40 years as well as some other key players in that ACC back and forth. This is different. Neither VT or UVA as new invitees would have the leverage in their new home to force that issue and there is a CHANCE if they tried both could miss out on a spot. You're not interpreting the current situation correctly and trying to draw parallels with a former situation that likely have subtle but, substantial differences.
(In response to this post by vtfaninnc)

You have to agree that the politicians are not going to sit on their hands. Which it what seems to be your position.
I understand the differences, they aren't that subtle, and I think some tough decisions would have to made in the event the political leverage does not gain traction but they will not just give up. They have to put up some type of effort to appease the voters. This may be sad, but sports are the one thing that will generate interest in voters.
The subject in Virginia is almost on full 'radio silence' other than the AG. Which in itself is interesting. Babcock made some 'we love the ACC' boiler plate comments. So, we don't have any leaks from in Va. that I am aware of. We have Big 12 homers making stuff up but that is to be expected.

they will not sit on their hands and have acknowledged such in posts on this board along with a level of cooperation and collaboration between the Virginia schools. Where I diverge is the belief by some that this is ALL IN and I believe both pragmatically and realistically both VA and NC politicians and VA and NC administrators, while committed, will recognize their likelihood of success and failure and carefully weigh all alternatives on the probability scales with the old adage half of something is better than all of nothing. It may be the shotgun wedding philosophy can succeed but, the P2 not the politicians will be driving the bus on whatever decision is made.

-ly lunches in Virginia with Congressmen/Congresswomen and the Senators. It was started to work together on Base Realignment, but believe me they know how important it is to keep both Virginia Tech and Virginia in a tier 1 Power Conference and they will do everything they can to keep it that way. Also, in spite of the rivalry between many fans, the two schools have been aligned beautifully at working the state legislature. I have heard from some politically active people from other states like Florida, Virginia is the model for getting things done for Virginia, and unlike much of the country right now, representatives in both parties agree and strongly work together on these two issues.
Thanks John Warner, Liz Taylor wasn’t your only legacy. 😁

that the Pols in NC and VA can demand that uva VT unc and ncsu remain together as a 4 school package.
Assuming reduced payouts to the new schools for a few years what would the response be:
A) no interest from either P2 conference
B) interest from only SEC
C) interest from only B1G
D) interest from both
I'm betting both conferences would rather have all 4 than 0. Of course the numbers have to work. But IMO these schools have more leverage then the drive by analysts seem to give them. And that is because schools like OSU and WSU had no juice. This is different.

part of it. SMU, Cal, Stanford were admitted to The ACC because The ACC NEEDED numbers. The expansion met the needs of all parties. The B1G and The SEC are not going to "buy" something that they don't want or need. You can offer to take a half-payout or any other concessions you wish to make. But both P2 schools will pass on a forced bundle. Your political PTB may be correct in assuring that nobody leave The ACC without approval, but it will not get them what the are aiming for.
(In response to this post by Vippie1)

Since the SEC seems to still remain a more regional conference. The B1G wants to spread out, and taking 4 schools from NC and VA doesn't work as well with that strategy.

The state of Virginia has an exploding Northern Virginia with easy influence/access to the DC where a lot of college sports rules will be determined, Richmond which has several Fortune 500 Companies, and Hampton Roads which dominates the world in Military Bases. North Carolina has Charlotte which is growing leaps and bounds, Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill that continues to grow, and Greensboro Winston Salem . That’s not only a lot of TV’s to watch, home to large companies that can Nationally Advertise and incredible influence if/when IMHO they stick together. the pro-rata numbers are so big - especially since the SEC added Texas and OU, that in-state "solidarity" won't help that much. When you look at UNC, UVa, NCSU and VT, it seems to me that the only one of the four that's is accretive versus the existing payouts without additions is UNC. UVA looks like they are next on the list due to 1) their academics for B10 or 2) preferred partner of UNC, assuming UNC could make a non-political choice. If all four get invited, it will be at a significant haircut to new conference peers.
So basically UNC (or UVA somewhat) are going to have to cross-subsidize VT and NCSU. Maybe that will happen. You are correct to point out that, "at some level of payout reduction" this can work. My guess is that the reduction will be quite nasty, though.
That which UNC adds, seems be more than reduced by the other three. I guess the question is "how much?," and "how committed are the VA and NC pols?"
It seems that there is more of a state-specific, geographical element to the B10 model, so it seems that if UVA goes there, it might make sense for the SEC to grab VT to check the B10.
But yes, at some level of discount the haircut model should work. It just seems the both the in-state schools are worth more being split apart - assuming VT and NCSU can land somewhere.

Also, the only school against Texas was Texas A&M, but these three together can hold the ground. I do think that Miami, FSU and Clemson are likely targets for the B1G. However, having them in the B1G is not a lot different than having them in the ACC IMHO. It seems pretty neutral to the situation that already exists. Many recruits will still want to play first and foremost in the SEC.

The 2 Schools are joined at the hip. This is TOTALLY consensus by all in the General Assembly AND the Governor/Executive office. Remember both the presidents of both Universities and Board of Directors are appointed by the governor and be relieved at any time. They have been told by all, (I mean all) that the direction of the Commonwealth is that UVA and VT are joined and neither school will be allowed to go by themselves. It's a package, and no matter what school may or may not have an offer for Big 10 and SEC, all powers in sports business should know this. Also the governor's office and General Assembly are prepared to not let one school leave without the other.
All leaders of both schools both agree as well. Having all these rumors are just planted because the UVA VT thing is real and conferences can't pick and choose. All borrowing from both schools for athletics is backed by the commonwealth, even they are not funded by state money. Therefore if either school goes in default, the State will be holding the bag. Also, especially in Blacksburg, the economy is driven by VT football, and if that product is squeeze its a economic disaster.

should be in the SEC. Although all four schools do have a fair number of alumni and students from the northeastern corridor, a significant majority were most likely born and raised in the two states.
Sports wise UNC and Virginia are more aligned with the original BIG schools. Both Virginia and UNC have men’s and women’s lacrosse with men’s lacrosse being a very long time sport at both schools. Not sure what would happen to those sports if the schools wound up in the SEC. Believe Florida has a women’s lacrosse team, but not sure if other SEC schools have that program. Ditto for wrestling, including VT and NC St if they are in the SEC.

If you were totally correct. All this movement been over with. No one knows exactly the end game. I would not be surprise if ACC survives. Why? Most besides (FSU) seem to know the disadvantages in another league. SEC only cares about select few. The BIG only cares about OSU and Michigan. At least the ACC has different sports for which certain schools are cared about the most.
How the ACC survives the day would be the question. I will say this VT and STATE are not going to Big 12 .

I see nothing the emasculated Big 12 can offer over an ACC emasculated just like the Big 12 is now.
big 12 who was much better back then, gave WVU the only life raft so they took it. But, I mean really look what it got them.
Way more expense to run their programs
Essentially no rivals or even schools that the non revs can do bus trips to.
An isolated island of the east in a conference centered in another time zone to the west.
If GOR survives even in part, the proceeds from any buyouts will push the revenues for a "new ACC" ahead in payout. Yeah we see all kind of numbers out there but the ACC did invest some or a lot of annual payout into the ACCN. I think that is a huge asset going forward.

If just FSU/Clemson leave then I think everyone else will stay and the ACC will live on. But if UNC/UVA/Miami also leave then I think its going to be a max exodus to the B12 because they'll be the more stable option at that point. Nobody wants to be left behind in a decimated ACC with BC, Syracuse, WF, and the Pac-12 exiles.
VT, NCSt, Louisville, Pitt, GT, and maybe Duke all bolt to the B12.

in the ACC, if the contract is extended till 2036, no one from the ACC will be going to the B12. The problem that the ACC has with backfilling if the top teams leave, is that the ACC passed on every single team in the B12 when they were available. It will be a tough row to hoe to get WVU, or anyone else to move to the ACC - even if the contract is extended.
The risk to the ACC as I see it, is that there are too many schools clamoring to get into the P2, and if/when there is a negotiated settlement with FSU, the cost will have been determined, and any school with an invite to the P2 will take it. What would the media contract look like if that happens, and ESPN can unilaterally drop the ACC, or more likely, negotiate a new contract. I think it comes down to what ESPN offer, and if it goes to the open market, you could get an ESPN/FOX deal similar to the B12 - and we all lived through the Apple/Amazon saga with the PAC trying to put a deal together.
ESPN appears to be going all in with the playoffs, and I don't think that is a good thing for the B12 or the ACC. If ESPN controls the eventual configuration of the playoffs, those not in the P2 will be in big trouble - not because of media money, and not because of the product on the field - but because of real access to playoff spots.

things are no where near as simple and cut and dried as you make them out to be nor is the union as unbreakable as you represent. That is not to say there is no collaboration or cooperation, just not to the levels you assert. You would be wise to look a little closer to verify what you actually know versus what you think you and you can start with the processes involved with making changes at the President and BOV levels.

UVA and Virginia Tech are indeed tied at the hip. It’s been well-known for some time that the politicians are way out in front of this and it’s not going to sneak up on anyone. Both schools have been given a directive that they cannot do anything that would leave the other in a compromised position (ie. Left in the ACC) and they are to work together for each schools interests.
Many of the prominent politicians, including the governor and attorney general, have been quoted as saying they want both schools and the same conference. The same goes for NC State in UNC. The politicians in North Carolina have all but said the same thing. They even went one step further and codified it into the rules that govern both schools through the UNC system.

that things are often said for public consumption and politics that do not necessarily equate to practical reality. As I said, I did not say there was no cooperation or collaboration, just not to the degree he asserted. Since you believe he is pretty much dead on maybe you would like to take a shot at the assertions regarding the presidential and BOV removal processes? As far as North Carolina goes you may want to read the codification and consider what it actually says and requires.

Governors and the president of the UNC system used and the power they voted themselves. The language reads to review financials and its impact etc. It’s widely known here in the local media (and is talked about quite a bit on local sports radio) that this rule was implemented to directly prevent UNC from negotiating and voting on their own to leave. The politicians that run both states have significant connections, both directly and indirectly with both schools in each state.
This entire event is happening in slow motion, and I know for a fact that NC State officials were so alarmed at the potential of UNC, leaving the ACC that they set this entire thing into motion through the governors office, who appoints the board of governors of the UNC system and its president.
There is a tremendous amount riding on this for both major schools in each state. Like I said everyone’s out in front of this and it’s not gonna sneak up on anyone.

from what you posted but, that is not what DMV(Mercury) said nor you(duro) supported. They will not be surprised and being out in front lessens the likelihood that they will have to be reactionary. Practically speaking all schools have voters and both states have other taxpayers and it is doubtful IF one school in each state has an opportunity that the politicians will ultimately veto a deal, even if they create some additional hoops to jump through to at least show they did all that they could.

allegiance AND their pocketbook connected to VT games remaining at the Tier 1 level - UVa becoming P2 without VT would be very bad politically west of Richmond.
The loss of $$$ from bars/hotels/restaurants/gas stations/local tax infusion from weekend games would have more impact politically in SWVA - than any $$$$ they might gain from the state grabbing 1 P2 position for UVa. They would blame politicians for the loss if they are involved in any way. Doesn't matter if the whole state gets more with just UVa going versus both staying in a sub Tier 1 conference - It wouldn't/couldn't be distributed well enough to quell the local losses.
I'm not saying it can't happen - but if the pols are heavily involved and only one goes - there will be serious political backlash from alums and and non-alums alike.

your argument on economics from the VT side, however, reverse the argument to UVA staying and VT going. In that case, do you think there would be backlash if VT were prevented from going? IMHO there will be backlash - in varying amounts - if there is interference by the pols that favors one over the other. It will either be the economic impact of what is, was - or could have been.

If the current conference realignment had advanced to this point back in 2010, 2011 time frame or before no one would probably question whether or not VT would be an expansion target particularly for the SEC. Our current president and AD have governed over the vast majority of the decline of VT football. They built up non rev/Olympic sports at the expense of the football program while doing nothing to improve the culture of giving back by fans and alumni. If not for the public disclosures of Fuente’s dalliance with Baylor of just how far behind VT was behind in football facilities and support infrastructures compared to our pier institutions in the power 5 we would not be seeing the level of investment and the urgency to improve that we currently see taking place. Tim Sands has done a fantastic job of raising VT’s academic profile. But I also believe up until the last couple of years or so he and by default Babcock were very comfortable with VT’s situation in the ACC. I believe they only now have the proper motivation to step it up highest levels due to extreme pressures exerted on them from high level VT donors and the outcry of core of the VT fanbase. This and the added political pressures being exerted on them now has them working to have VT a part of realignment behind the scenes. From everything I hear that is my educated speculation.
I would not feel nearly as positive about VT chances if it were only up to Sands and Babcock. It’s only the outside pressures being exerted on them that is forcing the issue. Like I said before I think if it were up to them, they would be very happy in the current ACC or whatever is left of the ACC thank you very much. That’s my opinion.

As for B1G? This is the pecking order, by B1G preferences: Notre Dame (not happening), Virginia, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Miami, Clemson. I can see them taking Georgia Tech to bypass the politics in VA. Does ND want to go to B10. Nope! However time may be running out on ND and it's precious "independence". Football wise, I think ND might survive, but they have a slew of other sports they want in a good conference. If, hypothetically, F$U, Clemson, UNCheaters, NCSU, HOOs, and VT managed to catch on with the P2, the ACC would be just a rump conference going forward. It would become a weak place for all of ND's non football sports.
At that point ND would have to ask for Big10 membership, so they would have a good place for their other sports.

I have also heard the 4 really like the regional nature of the SEC, but the B1G Academics are very appealing too. What’s interesting to me on that subject, is the Virginia Carolina all 4 went to the SEC, difference between the two would shrink substantially.
PS I know some think Academics should play no part in this (not me), but the voters are the Presidents of the Universities, and they do have to recruit their staff somewhat on who people associate them with Athletically.

If the 4 from NC & VA go to the SEC...
the SEC's academics will improve. The SEC will have VT, UVA, UNC, NCSU, UGA, FL, Vandy, Mizzou, TX and TX A&M. That will be half of their membership in the Top 100. KY, TN, USC-E, Auburn and OK aren't that far behind. Who knows what things will look like as the money and power continues to shift from the Northeast and Midwest to the South.

The Florida Gators Athletic Department is sounding the Alarm that they cannot compete within the SEC with the likes of Texas, Texas A&M, and LSU NIL money from Big Oil. Contributions from Hospitality and Entertainment can't match it. The Football Coach has been running a campaign on his knees lately with a tin cup. Almost literally.
So if the Gators can't compete, what is FSU expecting to do there?

They're an arrogant bunch who seem to think they're on the same level as Alabama, OSU, Michigan, etc.
And when they're winning 7-9 games every season, I hope they look back fondly on their ACC days when they could be a nat'l title contender every once and a while.

Those people believes the sun rises and sets for Texas. I not sure Alabama, LSU, UGA, et. al. will just fall in line behind Texas like a litter of puppies.

Bobby is why FSU turned down the SEC to join the ACC in 1991. And he didn't envision Texas Oil Money in the SEC paying players with little to no inhibition at schools he had to compete with during the regular season.
My point is that the administration there can easily take a look at what's now going on with Florida and falling behind in that league.

But I've heard some say that the powers at be at Carolina are more pro SEC. Maybe a Carolina insider can confirm that?

UNCheat would feel much at home in the SEC.
