The actual amount of the exit fee will be nowhere near $120 million. And the buy-back of FSU's rights will be quicker and less costly than most predictions. Pitt, Syracuse, etc. will have to acknowledge, at some point, that the conference is crumbling. FSU's departure will be the first blow. The shared money from the exit fee and any settlement on the rights buy-back will be helpful to them. If the conference takes a hard stand in refusing to negotiate the GoR, these schools get zero. $25 million is better than zero. They will be in favor of settling the issue. If the amount is too high, Clemson and other schools will be deterred from following FSU. The Pitts of the world will want another round of departures by Clemson, UNC, Miami, whomever. They want the cost of leaving to be affordable (but not cheap) so that they can collect more exit fees, more rights buy-backs. We all think these less prominent programs fear a breakup of the conference. Maybe they do, but when the process is set in motion, they will milk the cow for every cent they can get. They will not resist the breakup. The latest rumor (reliable? don't know) says FSU planned to notify Phillips in 1Q '24. Now the word is that they will tell him sooner than that. In either case, the plan is to be out of this conference for the 2025 football season.

I say that because Tech is a school that at least somewhat should at least be on the fence about an FSU defection. I mean Tech is one of two schools in a big population state that neither the SEC or BIG presently occupy. I past related in a post or two here that I am personally not fond of the FSU fan base. However I fit in perfectly here because FSU is painted the villain by many here every day. I am just imagining how the fan bases of Wake, BC & Duke feel about FSU. FSU is making themselves the most hated member of any conference in this country. Why is FSU doing that? I can only see two possible logical reasons. First, FSU is just pulling out all the stops in an all out effort to haggle more money from their ACC cohorts. Or secondly, FSU is dead serious and simply running interference for other ACC members to join them. Time will tell how this all plays out.

FSU was part of a group considering leaving to join the B12, the previous time the B12 had some teams leave ten years ago. The B12 was down to eight I think and was trying to get six top ACC teams to join them. I assume this was basically the MAG7 group. FSU chickened out, could not get the group to go along, or otherwise decided it was too dumb to do. That was led by a bunch of dumb, rich, loudmouth alumni, IIRC, back then, too.

The Big12 wants to change the narrative that they're unstable and turn it into them being the P3 now. Adding Utah and some of the worst football teams doesn't suddenly make you a Power conference. I don't see how FSU gets to leave without a reaction by ESPN that'll cost everyone a lot of money.

Not trying to defend them, but the only statements I have seen them make are that if something is done about the revenue gap with the BIG and SEC, they will have to look at their options (paraphrasing). Yes, he said that - gap wasn't sustainable, etc. Sabre rattling to appease his base and threaten the ACC. But he also said repeatedly that the GOR wouldn't be an obstacle. That's legally and factually wrong and needlessly fanning the flames to make the fans think their is an out.

Can work? Question is can you really blow up conference with 8 votes and GOR along with it? I am skeptical even that could be done without a questionable ugly legal battle over it and all the $$$. ACC feels alot like the Big East did in 2003, except much harder and more costly for Miami in this case FSU to leave. If 8 can't blow up conference and GOR with it, and ESPN will pay more for SMU, CAL and Stanford; then I am not sure why FSU, Clemson, UNC, NCSU would not support expansion, especially with the new schools foregoing or taking dramatically low share of media $$$ for several years? Is delay all about ACC getting best deal out of schools in terms of low payouts early in their membership? and FSU and others pushing for new money to be distributed based on merit model vice = share? Another issue is apparently UNC/NCSU were ready to flip vote if Calford membership were for football and basketball only. We were a football only member for a long time in the BEFC. UMass and Temple were in the MAC the same way, I believe. Maybe Idaho in the Sunbelt for a while, too? If we only want the CA schools for football, then we should be able to do that. I think a football only conference might not be allowed, although that should be easy to get around, IMO, but have a full conference of some of the members, like the BEFC.

They can’t make the money work is what I have heard EVEN if offered ( re the penalty $) And crickets are chirping with any SEC / Big 10 offers…
