They were not going to get 1/3 their current athletic budget in a G5 Conference. The cutbacks in their athletic departments would have needed to be extreme. I have viewed a lot of PAC area media coverage over the last several weeks. They say Cal & Stanford both heavily emphasize academics over their athletic programs. Those in the California media said they do that to a fault concerning their athletics. I have even heard several say they care little anymore about athletics. All that probably had at least a little to do with the B1G passing on them. It does look like they do care enough to join the ACC.

I don't know about California Berkeley, but Stanford has to care about athletics to accomplish 26 Directors Cup Championships. Now I don't think they've done much in Men's Basketball, but they've won Women's Basketball. Football comes and goes. They played in the Orange Bowl with Harbaugh.

It’s a big commitment to add schools on the west coast. This is about more than just growth. The ACC has an angle here. I can guess at some of it but I think there are aspects that might surprise and impress us. Maybe it’s the academic side. Maybe something with pay and ESPN. Or something else completely.
I know, it’s a very Pollyanna view. But the ACC could easily just stand still and do nothing. So there has to be something driving this. Some crazy plan that justifies it. Assuming the chatter is real and that we do grab 2-4 of the PAC schools.

No one is seeking the best match for biology or mechanical engineering championships.

Not that a PAC alliance couldn't work, but that sailed when OU and UW left. Not sure what such a limited, tentative expansion will really accomplish.

USC, UCLA, Washington and Oregon are cool. Playing all their games in the Midwest is cool.
Az St AD…cool comment about not going to to WVU.
