The Big BS in this whole thing
love how VT is #49 in DARPA research rankings. But all the media types can mention is Florida State and Miami both in the 70s are close to being acepted in AAU. The media has confirmed their application is close to being approved. Yes, ok

The credentials don't matter. Do they want you?

the issue is an on-campus medical school. That's the main reason Nebraska
withdrew. Having one in Omaha did not count.
Old Line Hokie Old Line Hokie
Maryland and Penn State have off campus hospitals.
PSU in Hershey and UMCP in Baltimore, I'm sure other AAU schools have the same set-up. Roanoke isn't that far from Blacksburg. ** Edited by Old Line Hokie at 8/29/2022, 7:47:14 PM

Nebraska was going to get booted out
T
tarheelblue
Nebraska actually did get booted out. They are the only school ever to
actually put it to a formal vote. All the other schools have left voluntarily when it was obvious they would not survive a formal expulsion vote. Nebraska actually only lost the vote by a few votes. The other Big 12 schools that were in the AAU at the time were basically the deciding votes that kicked Nebraska out. All the other schools have left voluntarily when it was obvious they would not survive a formal expulsion vote. ** Edited by tarheelblue at 8/29/2022, 2:30:52 PM

My question why did nebraska partner with big 10 then??
Wow didnt know that..these institutions are suppoae ffo be your business partners Bottomline u can bet nebraska refusing to invest in rd . As their aau peers was big. Alot to do witn faculty pay etc . Now jebraska is drifting - but get big bucks
Old Line Hokie Old Line Hokie
So Syracuse voluntarily dropped out?
T
tarheelblue
Yes. Syracuse and Iowa State agreed to leave before an expulsion vote.

It was either drop out, or be kicked out.

got some wrong assumptions
VT has several campuses NOT JUST Blacksburg. Look at VT master plan. The medical campus is in Roanoke, and VT has a teaching hospital its cornelian and the medical school are partners with them and use the hospital (which is in the vt medical campus in roanoke) Oh BTW VT veterinary hospital is on the Blacksburg campus. (or is vet school not medical??? hmm) OH BTW the other major campus is Northern Va. Its is grouped in 3 nodes, Falls Church/Balston, Alexandria (architecture) and Innovation Center (you heard that VT campus developed with the partnership with a small company called amazon). hmmm... Also, several AAU schools have hospitals not adjacent to campus. Penn State.....Philly. UGA not athens, but augusta. etc. their is bias in the AAU circle against land grant schools, however, frankly VT biggest weakness if faculty salaries and retention... Below the bench mark for the AAU schools.. but VT working on it.
M
mancunian
Isn't the Big 10 mostly land grants?

HOWEVER there is such thing as GRANDFATHER clause
Sorry ,they in the country club already, and now different rules. Case closed..... Thats the way the AAU plays, tougher for the new candidates. (wasn't that the same way for VT and the ACC for over 50 years; we were not part of the country club).
E
EDGEMAN
Nope. Nebraska got booted because AAU decided to remove...
...all farm related research from their calculations.
M
Mercury
Exactly boom — thats it!!
And thats the pressure for land grant achools. They have to meet the aau rd goals withoit counting agriculture And aau is nom government tjey make the rules

You are correct but just to show I didn't completely make it up, from
Wikipedia- Removed from the AAU. Chancellor Harvey Perlman said that the lack of an on-campus medical school (the Medical Center is a separate campus of the University of Nebraska system) and the AAU's disregarding of USDA-funded agricultural research in its metrics hurt the university's performance in the association's internal ranking system. In 2010 Perlman stated that had Nebraska not been part of the AAU, the Big Ten Conference would likely not have invited it to become the athletic conference's 12th member.

Our medical school is not a separate campus within a university system
It is a college within Virginia Tech....the example you use with Nebraska would be like UNC Chapel Hill counting a medical school at UNC Wilmington

Look at the BOV meeting and the review of the University Master Plan. It designates the 3 legal campuses and other real estate. Our campuses are Blacksburg, Roanoke Northern Virginia and centers in Richmond and Newport News/Hampton Roads.

Interesting that Notre Dame not being in the AAU is not holding anyone back
from wanting them in the Big 10, but it somehow applies to us. Total BS

University of California, San Diego has been an AAU member since 1982.
Also, Iowa State left the AAU a few months ago, and they aren't listed. ** Edited by tarheelblue at 8/28/2022, 10:56:00 PM

FSU has been mentioned the past decade. Surprised if Miami got in....
Florida is a growing state with a bright future, so it wouldn't surprise me if FSU gets in. Arizona State, Georgia, NC State, Virginia Tech, UMass, Cincinnati and maybe a few U of California system schools are possible future AAU members. Utah got in recently. For the past few years, I've been hearing that Arizona State was next if the AAU decided to invite a school(s).

Arizona State is interesting, Warren has mentioned them repeatedly, he has
ties to ASU, but I forget what they are. It’s also another NFL market and I watched ASU play USC. The fans watch on Sunday, lots of empty seats at the game.

interesting the bump at arizona state
Remember the New Provost of Innovation and R&D for Arizona State was the dean of science College at Va tech. She got an amazing offer. Arizona State is huge 50,000... all into online learning as well as vast university. (Arizona plays the elite university) with academics... Just interesting about university development, R&D and the sports and entertainment in large markets.

Thanks, I knew it was something like that & his family has ties there too I
believe. If they are going for the AAU, they may be the one that some are missing for the B1G. I don't get it, but Warren and even Delaney with Rutgers and Maryland seems to be targeting NFL markets. They certainly fit in that category.
3
33laszlo99
I had that same impression Stech.
That's why I think Georgia Tech and Miami are more attractive to The B1G than FSU or Clemson. Maybe even USF could be on their radar to get into Florida ahead of 2036. Tampa is a huge MSA.
M
Millpoint
I heard that Georgia Tech was vetted by the B1G during the UMD/Rutgers adds
They would seem to be a good candidate because of large market, recruiting and excellent research school.

...and they were the last school to join the AAU

Here is where VT is at with AAU
We needed a medical school but it is not on our main campus which could hurt.

Media dont know crap
Boy fake news. And BTW most of the AAU Schools are not athletic engines, they have a vote too and majority. sooo.... However, where VT is lacking, is faculty pay and retention. Lately we have had some the best and brightest researchers and professors leave for better positions and double or triple the salary. (academic world getting like athletics as well)
