Our issue is a simple one, QB. In this era of football if you don’t have
your QB you don’t have anything. You need elite talent to over come a poor QB. We aren’t that. Drones looked liked the answer in the beginning but somehow hasn’t progressed in 3 years. Having said that, whoever VT hires needs the right QB asap or that hire will go wrong as well. I think with a better QB this a different team with better record.

Case in point

we do have a great QB, but no OL to give him time to throw,
no good WR to catch his throws, and a bad HC who doesn't know how many TO he had left Drone should be a Heisman front runner at this stage ** Edited by Windows NT at 11/16/2025, 10:08:09 AM

Agree on the qb issue but let’s look at the inept defense especially lack
Of pass defense. No punts? Our safety play is awful!

I’m not saying we don’t have other issues but without a QB it’s moot.

In the words of Roxy Music, more than this
The OL doesn’t pass block very well. We lack explosive receivers. They are adequate, but they don’t get much separation. The secondary is young and small. We committed some really boneheaded penalties. The coaching staff made a couple of major blunders. It ain’t just the quarterback. He would be a lot better if he had better people around him. Still not great, but better.

You're kind of stating the obvious. It seems like the OP was making the
case that development has been a significant issue. Drones is bad. Period. And no amount of talent around him would make him anything other than bad. Maybe he would elevate from "really bad" to simply "bad".

This is where I remind everybody
That LSU wanted to pay him seven figures after his first season in Blacksburg, when he had better people around him. And before he got gun-shy and got happy feet. The defense rests.

He would have flopped at LSU. Not a snowballs chance he would have
played better than the guys they've had. Zero chance, in fact. His issues are fundamental and elementary.

Are you sure....
that was true or just a skillfully planted rumor to get VT to bite?

None of our QBs have progressed. Does the QB coach do ANYTHING?!?

This question is at the heart of what I believe is a wrong belief
about what coaches can do. K Drones has had something like 3 QB coaches plus a high cost private. Coaching, especially QB coaching, good or bad has had little to do with where Drones is. He is what he is and that is not a hidden talent waiting for a coach to find it and bring it out. What we see after 3 years is simply what he is.

True, but our defense is as bad as I can recall...ever.
They give up 30 points a game on average. Pitiful.

Drones is flawed for sure. But Monty never put him in position to suceed.
Everybody has flawed employees. But if you’re a decent manager, you identify their strengths and weaknesses. Then you put them into situations which take advantage of their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. You don’t continually put them into situations which expose their weaknesses and destroy their confidence - and ultimately everybody’s performance. Monty just can’t resist the urge to run an offense and call plays that appeal to him rather than what works. This team has a good set of big running backs, a decent running QB and an offensive line which has developed into a solid run block unit. It also has a well below avg pass blocking OL, a well below avg pocket QB, and a below avg receiving corp (particularly in getting early separation). So what does Monthomery do on almost every drive at some point? Run a drop back pass play on first down. Not even a “move the pocket” pass play. It defies explanation.

But last night, he did just the opposite
He leaned on the running backs and the QB run. Sprinkled in some non-1st down passes and we were moving the ball. Mistakes, and a defense that couldn't get off the field, got us into a hole that necessitated a passing game that we aren't equipped to run effectively. Monty tried to avoid that scenario, but didn't have a choice.

Unfortunately, KD is one of the worst performing QB's we've had.
