sexton is not a factor with chesney
either chesney stays at jmu for 800k or come to VT for 2.8 mil + bonuses. salary to increase 1 mil per yr for 4 yr + bonuses. ** Edited by Windows NT at 11/5/2025, 8:37:36 AM ** Edited by Windows NT at 11/5/2025, 8:45:38 AM

You really think Chesney won't have offers way above 2.8 mil?
Just the fact he is coming up the same path as Cignetti will fetch him more than that.

I'm thinking at least a couple mil higher than Pry's contract.
Turk Malloy Turk Malloy

Sure it could 4-5 mil
But it will not be 10+

Maybe not 10 but in this environemnt, 6-8.
I mean he is certainly within the top 10 prospects on just about every list.

2.8 mil base + bonuses = 4, 5, or 6 mil package
Cig's current salary is 500k base + "bonuses" ** Edited by Windows NT at 11/5/2025, 9:42:07 AM

i'm pretty sure Cig was making less per yr until they reworked the contract

I doubt Cignetti was making less than 2.8
At Indiana. I would guess double.

Oct 21, 2025 — On paper, Cignetti will receive a $500,000 base salary
2.8 mil base for Chesney 1st yr is a lot more than 500k ** Edited by Windows NT at 11/5/2025, 9:15:13 AM

I just looked it up
Cignetti's initial contract at Indiana was 6 years 27 mil plus incentives.
W
Windows NT

yup. "incentives" then. no comparation to his 500k/yr + incentives now
it's a lot higher. VT should structure Chesney's for 2.8 mil base + "incentives"
C
crazylane

The article said 4.5 million p2r year
Plus incentives. The math is easy. You really thought he would leave JMU for the big 10 and getting 500k base?

$500,000 base salary
"On paper, Cignetti will receive a $500,000 base salary and "outside, marketing and promotional" income of $9.65 million starting December 1, 2025" Chesney is not getting 9.65 mil starting out CBS Sports ** Edited by Windows NT at 11/5/2025, 2:24:48 PM

I'm not sure where you are going
Forget Chesney now. I never mentioned him. I disputed Cignetti was making less than 2.8 base salary at Indiana. Upon review he was making base 4.5 mil before his latest extension. I would guess Chesney is going to increase his 800k 6x or so.

Here's an article I found which talks about Cignetti's initial contract
at Indiana. So you are technically correct his base salary is slightly more than $2.8M ($3.0M = $500K x 6), but it wasn't that much more. "According to the memorandum of understanding obtained by HoosiersNow.com through public records requests, Cignetti will receive an annual base salary of $500,000 for six years through the end of his contract on Nov. 30, 2029. He will also earn $3,500,000 in annual outside, marketing and promotional income during the first year of his contract. That figure will increase annually by $100,000 and peak at $4,000,000 in the sixth year of the contract. Cignetti will receive an annual retention bonus of $250,000 on Nov. 30 of every year he remains head coach. Indiana University will also cover the existing buyout to James Madison." Now it is possible you included the annual outside, marketing, and promotional income as his base salary. However, it appears that Indiana didn't structure it that way and I am sure they had their reason.

I didn't do much research
And didn't include much. A quick Google seach said his initial contract was 4.5 per for 6 years plus incentives. Sounded right to me for starters at a p2 program.

Given the annual outside, marketing and promotional income isn't included
in his base salary, it is possible it isn't guaranteed until he fulfills certain requirements and/or the funding is from another source (i.e. booster club, external sources, etc).

The operative word "was" Coaching cost are exploding
No way to compare to what salaries for new hires were even 2 years ago. And please, as someone posted for every Cignetti there are 100 failures. I don't know if that ratio is correct but Cignetti is such an outlier, he should never be used as an example for anything. Wasn't the coach at JMU that Cignetti replaced considerd a better hire than Cignetti in his time? Yet he did not make a splash. Cignetti is no baseline to compare to. ** Edited by VTCALS72 at 11/5/2025, 9:04:25 AM

If he brings his coordinators it would be a no brainer IMO. Higher upside
than Franklin but lower floor. If he doesn't bring his coordinators I'm not as exciting relative to any other name.

The alternative: failed P4 coach that was fired or a coordinator
We tried the coordinator route, and he was the worst coach at VT since Jimmy Sharpe. I guess Bill Dooley was technically our last coach hired from school from a major institution. That didn't end well. He was a far worse AD than coach, though.
