Not a finance major, were you?
(In response to this post by UGAHokie)
Do you have $10M+ that you are donating for that?
(In response to this post by UGAHokie)
He's owed $14.5M in the next 3 years
Most buyouts are somewhere around 3/4 of the guaranteed salary. That's why I just said $10M+ It's an 8 figure number to fire Brent Pry this year.

🤷 That's the bulk of it though.

another $3 million. Just write a Check for an even $22 million and that may be low. Then pull out another $5+ million per year for a new coach.

In the modern era (70's-forward)....Winning % of VT head coaches with previous HC experience:
Beamer 66%
Dooley 63%
Fuente 58%
Winning % of VT head coaches with no HC experience:
Sharpe 49%
Coffey 38%
Pry 36%
I don't know WTH Whit was thinking when he landed on Pry. I also don't know WTH the AD is thinking now, when debating how much longer to hang on to the coach with the lowest winning percentage in the last five decades. Making a bad hire is unfortunate, but doubling down on a bad decision is what really causes organizations to enter a failure doom loop.

I’ll play. You could not be any more wrong about Coach Dooley. He was a shot in the arm after the 70’s with Coffey and Sharpe. The NCAA rang him up on by college football standards - a minor infraction. Yes he left Frank on probation, but he also took the program through its most sustained period of success since Claiborne.

his number one criterion was "head coaching experience". Two things happened - either he tried to hire someone and whiffed, or he is just incompetent and couldn't get it done/no one was available. He needs to do a bit of recruiting himself. This guy is a fraud as far as I'm concerned. Yes he looks the part, but his demeanor and comportment screams beta male.

Tried to hire Napier, got outbid.
Tried to hire Clawson, got turned down.
Tried to hire Lane Kiffin, got told no by the BOV
Narrowed it down to Pry and Elko, John Ballein influenced him to pick Pry.
Whit also looked at Hugh Freeze briefly before being told absolutely no chance by those around him

1, Each position requires a buyout, IT could be totally for 2 guys over 15 million dollars.
2. Also VT (as much of power 4 conferences will have to pay players by the court settlement. estimated annual cost in excess 0f 20 million a year.
3. VT does not have the disposable pay to pay off these conttaccts, pay the 20 million to pay players and also pay new contracts for power 4 staff. remember. this is NOT a stepping job, and a group of 5 job. To get top notch coaches and recruiting experts who are all in NIL expertise, it will actually cost us more.
I more of the take, to replace Whit, and work with Pry, to upgrade Staff where needed

he/she has other ideas. Football in P4 is the most visible aspect of an ADs job. No AD worth anything would accept those terms.

existing HC in football to be forced on them. Not sure what you read or what that has to do with contracts or the SEC?

sub-500 record P4 football coach with a three years under their belt? There is no way we fire Whit and Pry continue as VT's HC. Not happening.

I'm not a great Whit fan but they are not autonomous. No AD is.

that a new one won't allow an existing HC (in football) to be forced on them (in response to another poster who said fire Whit and keep Pry).

I believe every game was sold out this year for football
not to mention they had their highest donor year ever for 2024. That isn't all of a sudden cratering overnight.

Or billionaire willing to fork their cash over to us…… right. Not financially possible is just that. Most folks realize that unless you are willing to buy a team you are not going to be at the top. Pretty simple math

I'd be perfectly happy seeing VT drop down to FCS level. I realize it will never happen, though. I'm sure VT will continue to chase the money of "power conference" affiliation, reality be damned.

But, I just dont see the math in buying out an AD, FB head coach, assistants, etc., There is just not nearly enough money to do this.
The MBB is already sucking bad due to lack of money to do NIL.
(In response to this post by JRHokie)
? You think football makes that much money?
Actual dollars that solely football brings in isn't even close. I would say maybe 85% of the Ticket Sales portion of the linked chart below, otherwise, the TV rights and just contributions from the 25000+ Hokie Club members make up 65% of the revenue, while another ~10% comes from Student fees.

When in reality, it is a crapshoot. Also, for the Whit haters, the football program did deteriorate under him, but the basketball team improved (with the exception of this year).

Are banging down the door to come here. Never mind the money issue our program like most of the rest of college programs that cannot buy a team will get what we get.
It is all about the dollars and nothing else. Great place that college sports has gotten to
