I like watching Indiana smash teams out *because* they are so freaky good.
They probably won't be this dominant next year. People will talk about this 2025 Indiana team like they talk about the '85 Chicago Bears.

Congrats to your team for a great season.
I remember how fun it was to be a VT fan when we first started jumping up and biting the big dogs in the ass. You know, the old days.

I know they are our rival
But I was pulling for them. I like it when the SEC is reminded that good college football does exist outside of their little club.

If Duke and JMU are in the playoffs
and teams with a real shot at wining it all, like ND, Miami, or Texas are out, what does that say about the current playoff system?
I thought this was supposed to be superior to the bowl system for determining a MNC, but I'm not so sure.

I thought conference champs got an automatic bid, no?
Miami deserves to be in though.
Looked it up. They *might* get left out, but if they win the ACC, I hope not.

Gotta agree. 1992 was as terrible a season on paper
But I don't remember us just getting embarrassed like we did tonight. Not even when #1 Miami came to town

Well, congratulations to the Hoos on a magical season..
No one expected this from them, and that must make it feel so much sweeter. I would put this on LeSabre, but I've been banned from posting over there for 20+ years now.

The Pitt players need to know the ACC brass wants UM to win
So don't tempt fate with needless extracurriculars.

I hereby retract any aspersions I may have cast towards young Arch Manning
early in the season. He is really living up to the hype now.

Relax. PSU just wasn't challenging enough for him
He will be better with a smaller budget and weaker recruiting classes.

Given the cost of a college education has been outpacing inflation
For about 35 years, would think schools would focus on making it more affordable for kids from working/middle class families, but nope. Gotta have that shiny new stadium and the multi-million dollar coach that will be fired as soon as he underperforms (but the school will still be on the hook for his buyout.) College football has become such an ugly business.

I wasn't suggesting we hire Bud
but I think regardless of who we hire, mediocrity is the best we can hope for. The football landscape has changed, creating greater separation between the haves and the have-nots, and we are one of the have-nots.
That is fine with me. I will always have love for VT, regardless of how good the football team is. This also frees up my Saturdays for other activities.

It is that thinking that got us to this point.
But Bud's moment has passed and he isn't coming out of retirement anyway.. I don't expect us to be able to compete with SEC teams, but I don't think it's too much to ask that we at least keep it competitive with Sun Belt teams.

Temple '98 is no longer the darkest day in VT football history
We are not just losing to ODU,we are getting throttled.

If there is anything still impressive about VT football
It's how many fans that still show up to watch us get slapped around by mediocre teams.

You're *****ung about me making an observation
The irony. I guess there isn't much for old-timers to do besides watch television.

Watching Arkansas State vs. Bowling Green
Really drives home the point that there are just too many bowl games

PSU v. SMU was over early
And nothing was on the line for Clemson and Texas. Both were in the playoffs regardless of how the ACC champ game played out.

Not to mention, it d oesn't seem other organizations looked to see what
Else was going on today. We have college football playiffs, the NFL, college basketball, and Usyk vs. Fury II.

Especially considering the cost of higher ed has outpaced inflation
For about 35 years. Current students are already paying more for a degree than any generation before them. They shouldn't be forced to subsidize semi-pro sports on top of that.

Maybe i just imagined it
But i think i just saw a Cal cheerleader that looked like she could play OL.

So there is a bowl game in the Bahamas now.
Nice this time of year. ACC should drop a cold climate bowl and try to get in on that. I mean, if we are going to the NobodyCares Bowl, might as well do it at some place that has nice weather and sandy beaches.

Can't even really consider football players Hokies
They are just mercenaries, chasing playing yime and/or NIL money. No loyalty to any one school.
Football Board

Law of large numbers and all.
Small samples can have weird results, but the larger the sample, the closer it gets to "truth."
Football Board

Maybe we should start following non-NIL sports
Is our baseball team any good? Lacrosse? Isn't badminton an olympic sport now? Maybe we could get one of those going. At least we know most of them will be Hokies from beginning to end.

I come here for hope and you guys basically give me "we'll only lose by
about 20 if we do everything right." I guess we still have women's bball, right?

Maybe all that extra muscle affected his throwing mechanics
Don't need a bodybuilder physique to play qb.

At least the sports that big money has corrupted
Instead, take that money and invest it in the smaller sports, where the athletes are true student-athletes, and not mercenaries that major in sports.

That must be including grant money in addition to base salary
or he has a side-hustle, like statistical consulting. If your son wants to make real money, he should steer clear of academia, as it is very rare for professors being that highly paid.

That is exceedingly high, even for a full professor
Full professors at private doctoral institutions make the most, averaging around $225k per year. Full professors average below 200k a year, even at elite public institutions like the University of Texas at Austin. Also varies by major. Professors in business or law tend to be the highest paid, while those in the arts or humanities tend to make the least. Keep in mind it typically takes a long time to make full professor and not something anyone can realistically hope to achieve before they are 40. Also, the era of most professors on campus being tenured has gone the way of the dodo bird. In a cost saving measure, much of the teaching load is handed off to non-tenured (adjunct) professors, who work on a contractual basis (which can be terminated at any time) and are paid a pittance. Which begs the question, where is all this money going? As always, the head football coach is typically the highest paid person at a university, by far.
Some things I picked up after being in that world for a while.

Can be very cost saving
Which matters, as the cost of higher education has outpaced inflation for the last 35 years. A student does his first two years at a loal community college, saving a lot of money, and does the last two years at a four year university.
Something has to be done about these runaway costs, and these pathways from two year schools to four-year public (and sometimes private) schools are just one way states are dealing with it.

Makes sense courses should transfer
It's not like they teach some secret physics at schools with high admission standards that students at open admission schools aren't privy to.

I thought the message was "retire gracefully or be fired," so he retired
I think Mack Brown was offered the same ultimatum, but he chose not to retire.
