I don't mean to offend you but are you trying to be obtuse? There are
literally numerous examples of how even betting FOR your team can create conflicts. Accumulate gambling debts or loans with/from bookies and other sordid third parties and you will be leaned on to do all sorts of things that aren't FOR your team. Perhaps even hedge bets with a 3rd party to mitigate potential losses if there's, for example, a key injury on your team during game week (and you've already placed a bet FOR). The examples are endless all of which would completely destroy the sanctity of the game. And how would you contain the betting "sphere" to only FOR bets, how could it possibly be regulated with so many possibilities with intermediaries, seriously?

We don’t always agree but this is correct. Today’s offensive skills are
just sick over the top. Thru AAU, kids have honed their skills through so many competitive games and by college have extraordinary confidence and top level offensive skills and court awareness. High school basketball seasons of 40 years ago, along with a few off-season leagues mixed in, seem almost quaint.

"Nice opportunity" was a great place to stop. Impugning other posters
wasn't necessary nor were your comments even accurate. Most have no problem with athletes being compensated, it was long overdue particularly with the adults involved - coaches, sponsors, media and universities - raking in billions. And they had plenty of years and lost lawsuits to rectify the situation. Though without a clear structure around NIL, academics, compensation, portal, transfers, etc., many see college athletics heading in a direction that isn't sustainable or, at a minimum, not worthy of their support. Supporting teams with almost entirely new rosters every year and players that have no meaningful connection or loyalty to their university isn't compelling. Again, blame the adults, they put themselves in this situation and still fecklessly sit on their hands while the situation continues unabated.

Funny story. I was next to him hitting balls on the range at Ballyhack a
couple of years ago. Was there for a VT donor function and I think he was performing in Roanoke that evening. He wasn’t hitting the ball very well and every third swing or so was followed by a string of expletives. I just stopped and watched the show! He has a decent swing too. My wife met him in Nashville this past Fall and told him that her husband saw first hand how passionate he is about golf. She said he couldn’t have been nicer.

Yep, ask any D1 or NFL coach. Ex-QBs are notoriously bad blockers. It’s
just not in their football DNA. Of course there are exceptions but can’t think of any!

ACC officiating is fair game. They also seem to have a penchant for calling games in a way that benefits the ACC. Not sure if there is concrete data to support that but it sure as hell seems like it when watching key games on television.

It's not hate and assuming you cut him some slack with his two football
hires and his allowing John Ballein and others to undermine those hires, there is still the disaster called the Hokie Club. This is not a professional fundraising organization by any stretch. It's filled with Beamer era cronies and lifers who have absolutely no skill sets in fundraising. Whit has done nothing to correct this and, in fact, given his bureaucratic propensity has shuffled unqualified people around in various positions exacerbating the situation. There are quite a few high dollar VT donors who have absolutely no respect for Whit's leadership. Whit's comfort zone is to surround himself with low initiative performers who don't rock the boat. Highly skilled, high achieving fund raisers need not apply and this is well known in the university fund raising community at large. Again, it's not hate, Whit is who he is and anybody with an objective perspective can see this.

himself to speak up. Nobody with any knowledge of Whit Babcock would call him a trendsetter. He is the consummate, risk-averse, manage-up bureaucrat. With the football program spiraling down to oblivion why not finally throw a Hail Mary and say “we need more money”?

Over simplification. It didn’t take five years to figure out that Pry had
no idea how to run a program. There were red flags galore in the first season that this guy was completely clueless and years 2 and 3 only reinforced the initial assessment. There was nothing about him that instilled confidence, ever, a complete facade. According to your logic we should continue on……just because.

They’re not on the team anymore. And comparing Pry’s cluelessness to
to the vast majority of players who are/have given their best effort misses the mark. Lumping them all together makes it simple for you. But keep in mind this is all a creation of Whit and Pry. Imagine, Pry said just this offseason that “this was his best roster”. Idiocy beyond belief that some of us saw from the beginning. Where were you?

Yep, between that and some with the obsession that any hire must have a VT
connection is just plain weird. Regarding the former, how many times did we hear - “but Pry is a nice guy”? So is my neighbor but what does that have to do with anything related to results? By the way, I have it from multiple very good sources that few players actually respected Pry. That matters much more. And the VT connection infatuation is such small time, myopic thinking but it continues to live on. To the extent that it does, it casts the VT donor/fan base as hillbillies in the modern era.

like that. And if it happened what does that tell you about Whit that he would accept that type of demotion. Football GM, half AD and a new AD equals pure dysfunction. Surely our BOV isn’t that stupid.

You’re not wrong but arguably we have had opportunities to be one of the
“haves”. For whatever reason, VT suffers from perpetually insular, small time thinking in our southwestern VA bubble. No school that is hungry would keep Whit around for ten years. He’s weak and anybody that spends time around him realizes it.

Everybody already knows what he has done. The question is to what extent
VT should be involved in any punishment beyond the legal system. You want the coaches to be very involved, others view it differently. Were you this strident when Beamer/VT seemed to have a problem with rogue player behavior seemingly every week in the 90s. In fact, it was a national story. Also, TSL posters are aware enough to know that we’re all entitled to our opinion, no need to tell us.

OK, I will take the bait, do you really expect to find reason and logic
on a sports message board? After all, passion and hyperbole have been a part of sporting debates since at least the ancient Greeks. Also, is it realistic to believe that this poster ".....can only express (his) opinion with hyperbole". Maybe it was just this one opinion, or half his opinions, who knows? My point, most get Toledo's take and that is, given past performance with a Pry coached team, it will probably be a beat down. Has Pry ever beaten a favored team as a HC? We all hope he finally does, including Toledo. As you point out, it does happen (somewhere I have a table that shows % chance of beating every spread at the P4 level). But most don't believe Pry can do it, and that's a reasonable opinion based on the last three years.

For sure and the presentation to the BOV is because just about every other
university has already done this. The VT culture is so reactive, looking around to see what everyone else is doing then tepidly, slowly moving forward. Right in Whit’s wheelhouse.
