Two notes on Jailen Bedford and Sin'Cere Jones from Mike Young:
Asked Mike Young about Jailen Bedford's eligibility for next season this morning, given that Bedford played first two years at JUCO (Trinidad State College). "There's a possibility. I'm not sure how realistic. I'm not sure what kind of possibility. We'll certainly explore it." Said they'd love to welcome him back. Also, freshman Sin'Cere Jones was on a scooter on Saturday vs. Wake Forest. Mike Young said he had a foot injury and will not play again this year. "He was on a good course, and best days certainly ahead for him. He's got a lot of work to do this spring and summer, but we really like him."

This is why VT needs a law school
So we can have alumni to lean on like Bama, Georgia, Michigan

Exccuse me, VT graduates in engineering and computer science are doing good
Many of our graduates are starting very well and are leading corporations, (but they leave SWVA) Most go to Major metropolitan areas where the high technology jobs are concentrated. They are not single practice folks like attorneys or doctors. When you make 7 figures, so many opportunties for investment come your way. In the PAST, VT has been doing a terrible job outreaching to these folks with the level of $$$. VT Development has done very good. THey have trained experts in fund raising to corporations and single donors, Also, just like football, everything has to be first class in appearance and presentation. If you are fund raising to someone who you want to give seven figures, you dont have someone like a student intern, or someone just out of college, to make the case. (gives the appearance of rinky dink and not worth placing dollars to the cause.

I never suggested that we need to replace or supplant the engineers.
I was just saying that we need a law school so that law alumni become judges, and we have an advantage like what happened with Trinidad Chambliss. That judge at one point cried.

To be fair, VTs lawyers are perfectly adequate here
This is more about aligning previously settled case law than anything groundbreaking. Unfortunately, very similar instances thay have recently gone through the courts were not settled in the athletes' favor, albeit a different state. Im not sure VA sees it differently, or that Bedford is a big enough of a name to get a judge to have some bias. I think VT should hold a roster spot and not much more than that when planning for next season. He would be a welcome addition that shouldn't be planned on being around

Yeah. Writing a little about it today, it's interesting.
Outside of Vandy's Diego Pavia, a bunch of cases — West Virginia, Rutgers, Nevada, Tennessee — went in completely different directions. No telling how Bedford's would go or what kind of judge you'd get.

A slight nitpick, GC. From my observations over the years,
lawyers on VT staff are marginal, at best. A few years ago, after I left the VSB, I was replaced as an investigator by a VT staff attorney,...because the pay was better. Now, if you mean lawyers for VT who are not on staff, but perhaps on retainer, I could wholeheartedly agree with you.

I moreso meant a combination of all the above but specifically those...
Who would be involved in this type of case. The athletic department doesnt just allow whoever to take on a case regardless if theyre an alum or not. So I guess more specifically, the person or persons chosen to represent VT in this matter will certainly be able to do their job

Again, based upon my past observations, I cannot share your
optimism re: VT legal counsel. Additionally, the first thing the VT AthDept would have to locate is a backbone to want to pursue legal action (a backbone they have yet to reveal). Both of our differing opinions of the adequacy of VT legal counsel are moot, if our "leadership" doesn't have the cajones to pursue legal action. As far as the adequacy of VT legal staff, I have copies of the dozens of the contracts VT has, all of which are supposedly reviewed by legal staff. JMHO, but some of those reviews are cursory at best, malpractice at worst. And no, I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express, but after investigating lawyers for the VSB, VT lawyers are extremely lacking.

Lack of Backbone is "Spot On"
My wife calls them the "aw gee shucks" gang. Our Athletic Dept ought to have an enormous chip on its shoulder as bad as we have been treated over the years starting with Denny Crum and the Metro Conference...

Agreed. You're only repeatedly victimized if you allow yourself to be.

Oh, our attorneys are more than adequate.
I was just saying that we need judges who are VT alumni so they can rule in our favor while crying about how they love Tech. Like what happened down south.

Oh that'd for sure make things easier...
There could be a quasi-political statement here about not needing a law school be a judge, but Ill leave that alone Standalone discussion though, Id love to see VT have a law school and full blown medical school

It's kind of amazing that a school of VT's size doesn't have a law school.
They are cash cows. At one time, Penn State had not one, but two law schools. I thought that VT had two medical schools - one with Carilion (MD) in Roanoke, and VCOM (DO) in Blacksburg?

VT should do a small law school specializing in patent law
and technology law. We would need a niche to get it started, since VA already has a bunch of good law schools (UVA, W&L, W&M and UofR)
LegalHokie LegalHokie

It doesn't quite work that way. A law degree (JD) is a law degree...
You can specialize once you are practicing. I clerked in law school for a prominent personal injury firm. Then I realized that was not for me. I know do construction, real estate, and handle general business-to-business matters. For certain areas, like patent law, you also need to have a technical undergraduate degree in order to practice in that area. But to your point, VT could run dual BS/JD programs that would tie in well with our engineering and science programs. There would be plenty of demand for a VT law school. The closest one to Blacksburg is actually in Grundy of all places!

I would love to see a 6-year integrated Engineering/JD program.
For some reason, VT's College of Engineering doesn't seem to care about integrated degrees with other parts of the university. There have been proposals over the past 10-15 years to do a combined 4 or 5-year BS Business / BS Engineering combo program, but it never got off the ground. They also don't seem to be interested in actively participating in Pamplin's entrepreneurship programs. These are missed opportunities for VT's students.

Here is a listing of and rating of Virginia law schools
I see where George Mason is #2 in the state. I guess being in NOVA near DC is a pretty good benefit…..

And Georgetown and GW are right across the river too.
Plus UVA, Duke and Wake in NC. Lots of competition in the neighborhood.

Yeah, PSU negotiated some sort of deal with Dickinson College
(which is in Carlisle, PA very close to where I grew up) to horn in on their existing law school years ago. Then they opened a State College branch. Then the two schools became independent. Now they're merged again. Dickinson is a very cool little school btw...my daughter seriously considered it.
LegalHokie LegalHokie

I went to The Penn State Dickinson School of Law. The merger was announced
during my first year there. The law school and Dickinson College, while adjacent, were actually separate schools. Carlisle was a good place to study law. My son was recruited by Dickinson for soccer but he ended up choosing Sacred Heart.

Hokie alumni should claim VCOM as our second med school since...
...they do have a VT.edu suffix on their emails, even though it's separate from VT. Just loosely affiliated with VT (I guess). Two med schools, and one vet school!

I think Carilion is a step in the right direction...
But so far away from campus makes it essentially a satellite campus without having the feel of being tied to the school other than in name only. I am thinking from a perspective of increasing donors and donation amount. Its great theres an affiliation but how many of them actually feel like theyre a part of the school? You could live in Roanoke for your entire tenure and never step foot on campus and graduate.

VT's med school is tiny, graduating less than 100 per year
LegalHokie LegalHokie

I think it's a bit more than that, but VT just announced they are expanding
the med school to eventually have 400 a year. My son is actually working on his med school applications and studying for the MCAT's right now.

They only graduated 49 this year and took in 56 1st years (Class of 2029)
It's a tiny program. The Blacksburg campus of VCOM, which is not officially part of VT, admitted 185 first-year students in its most recent class.

there and almost never come to campus.

Yes, hanging out on gameday in the Grove is an experience. Down at the
Square on weekends is pretty fun as well. Outside of Oxford, not a lot going on.
