Glad he is here and I hope he does well, but…
I do not understand the fixation some have with the magical 7’ height line. Anyone who has been paying attention to basketball over the last 20 yrs should realize that height just isn’t a big deal any more. I would much rather have a 6’ 9” Athlete than a 7’ statue. There are only 1-2 7’ players each year who make a difference, and VT willl never get them. I believe we will all be happy with Hansberry as our starting 5. If Dorn can give us 15 effective mins a game that would be perfect. ** Edited by VT ChemE 1986 at 7/18/2025, 10:17:19 AM

Of course anyone would make that choice.
It's also not a choice in play here. We don't know Dorn to be anything like a statue and I don't think he was chosen over some great 6'9" athlete. Height absolutely matters (and I don't think there's any real claim of any "magic" about 7'), along with a slew of other factors. You didn't pick 6'9" for no reason. The number of bodies with enough talent and athleticism to make an ACC roster at 6'9" and up is pretty limited, so a 7-footer like Dorn garners understandable interest.

A 7’er can do things that don’t necessarily show up in stats like rim
protection. They don’t even need to block a huge amount of shots but just make their presence known. Hokies haven’t had a good rim protector in years and it is an important part of defense that often goes over looked.

Not fixated on Dorns height
I just know that some of the fan base was concerned if he would ever get here. Hansberry will be our starter IMO without a doubt and should be productive in Young's system. Height is good thing to have, but generally speaking coaches are more concerned with a center's wing span than height.

Well . . . Compare their wingspans then.

Uhh. Height absolutely makes a difference
Especially if he can play

I think this one will make a difference.
He has mobility, size and skills to present match up problems for opposing bigs in the paint and also provide rim protection on defense. What I want to see is how well he passes the ball back out to open wings. He could end up playing 20+ minutes a game, depending on how Gurdack comes along.

How about he is a productive 22 YO center who plays in a pro league
Against older pros ** Edited by VTKev80 at 7/18/2025, 11:55:56 AM

I immediately thought those exact words when reading the OP.
Who's ready to see Dorn play gamegame games for the Hokies?

I think youre right if that 7 footer isn't mobile
While he isn't going to win foot races, hes an upgrade over both Poteat and Wessler in that department I think if I were amending your statement I would rather have someone 6'9 with a 7'3 wingspan than someone who is 7'0 and immobile I just dont think that applies here. He is mobile enough to use his size against most matchups

Do you agree with

Lol of course not...
When a UVA fan tries to pretend they know more about VTs roster than VT fans you have to see it for what it is

Hopefully he has benefited from Euro coaching meaning he has been coached
be more versatile than the stereotypical American big man and can play face to the basket.
