Unlike FB, I am not feeling great about this years mens BB.
As has been discussed, it appears we currently can not compete well enough in the NIL racket. Best is middle of the pack with below middle being the expected finish. I hope I am wrong.

You are entitled to your feelings......
I would ask what you base them on though? Even hours of informed film study produces, at best, a guess how the individual pieces might fit as a unit. You may end up being right but, I am going to wait until I see more before feeling bad or good. At least with FB there is spring practice and other info to provide a baseline for expectations.

With this basketball team, anything is possible. Hard to compare to FB
where so many key pieces are returning, and we have more or less filled in spots that needed improvement. With basketball, virtually all of the meaningful production is being replaced with new players or younger players that have not been asked to do much up until now. The roster structure seems very different, but I have no idea whether different will = better or worse than last year's team.

I don't know if it is lack of NIL money or not but...
I don't think anyone in the list of transfers could start on an ACC team in the top of the conference. Therefore, I don't think collectively they can get our team into the top half of the conference...despite how good of a coach I think MY is. As many people have said, MY success or failure will depend on whether he can get ACC talent.

Captain obvious
But Tech rarely got talent that the very top of the ACC wanted. NIL or no NIL. Our financial ability to compete going forward will be inclusion into the SEC would be my guess. If this mega expansion does take place. And a successful VT football program will be the driving force that would get us in.

I’m excited to see what this team does with almost no expectations, I know
this, Mike Young was not happy with last year’s team, and it was one basket away from a 20 win season in a way underrated ACC. So some of the Smart Phone Coaches think they are smarter than him, but I like his track record better. However, maybe that’s just me. 🤷‍♂️ ** Edited by Stech at 5/19/2024, 9:00:25 PM

No expectations is the way I approach any season of any sport
A lot easier and more entertaining to just sit back and watch than to fret expectations

It's not you. You are 100% spot on. A few "experts" will always be on hand
to let us know how little we actually know.

I will bet money the CMY pitchforks come out as soon as we lose a game.
Even though it wasn’t his choice to defund the team.

As sure as the sun rising in the east.

They always do when he losses, so you will win that bet.

Probably similar in athleticism. Team chemistry will be the difference,
one way or the other.

If athleticism is the same...we are in trouble.

We average middle of the pack in the ACC

Can not compete in NIL is different than choose not to compete in NIL.
We went all in on football. That’s a choice. I hope it works out.

We may still be left out but this is a solid strategy. If basketball is
that important, everyone should be chasing UConn, Kansas, Duke etc, but it hasn’t happened.

I'm going to enjoy MY doing the most out of what he has
Hard to say what will happen.

I think he did indeed do that this past year.

I do too

I think they will be about like last year
But I also think they will have better chemistry. Something was way off with them last year.

It is, but he may not have had as athletic a group of players on the roster
as he'll have this fall. I doubt anyone, including CMY, will be making any predictions on what this squad will accomplish. 12 wins? 15 wins? 19 wins? 22 wins? Who knows. May be interesting though.

Feels like a really fun team to watch.

The three freshman may be the key
I think we have kind of an idea the impact the transfers will give us and the few players returning. We should be solid at PG and wings. Have some solid options at 4 and 5 which should makes us a solid .500 average team, but if Jones, Hammond and Johnson can play impactful minutes by January we could approach 18-20 wins. But hard to tell with freshmen! Big if.

So does everyone else on this board!!

nope

I am optimistic next season will be better than the last two. If they
develop good chemistry and are fortunate to not have many injuries, this team will be way more athletic and handle the ball better. But time will tell.
A
ancient alien 2018
Agree!! I'm hoping this 24-25 team will be similar to the USC-e. of 23-24.
lots of new faces and way more athletic. Big key will be which players can provide the 3 pt. punch that CMY likes. Or maybe that won't be as necessary as it has been in the past, with more athletic players being able to play near the basket

A 6-foot-8, 200-pound athletic forward who can jump out of the gym but
will get pushed around quite a bit?
A
ancient alien 2018
He weighs 230. He's college ready physically. Watch his youtube videos
Don't believe me? Ask GC his opinion. He'll be a 10-12 minute player per game by late jan. or early Feb.

I think you guys are talking about two different players
949hokie 949hokie OP
I would feel better if we had kept Kidd but
maybe there was a chemistry issue there...
H
HokiesACC2004
Didn't pay him enough
Which I understand on our part.
A
ancient alien 2018
Had some locker room / staff issues as well. Sure not worth what scUM
is reportedly paying him, that's for sure.
H
hokietom87
I kept hearing that last year as well
Night life in Miami won't be good for him
949hokie 949hokie OP
Or NIL$ most likely
A
ancient alien 2018
My understanding was leaving was his choice, VT refused to pay the
absurd $$ he wanted, and the last half of the season, he and the staff had some difficulties. True or not, it doesn't matter. He's gone and I can see a true frosh getting some PT at center this fall.
