Support Group Needed
I come here in search of commiseration and the knowledge that my despair might find company.
What we witnessed last night was a motivated opponent with the playbook playing against a team that, as Tony repeatedly tells us, has almost no margin of error. Because of the opponent, it was, it my opinion, THE embarrassment of the Bennett era, surpassing the NCAA debacle against Florida a few years ago. Observers will say that we looked flat, had no juice. Even that we looked intimidated. I grant you that Cassell is a tough place to play and that VPI is a tough opponent on their home floor, but last night's effort beggars belief.
How can you look so bad against a team that seemingly wants to beat you more than you want to beat them? VPI would froth at the mouth at the prospect of beating us in an egg-rolling contest. We can't be bothered to come at them with the same energy? I don't get it. One thing about this team that I note is that we don't have any dogs or seemingly any real vocal leadership. I might be wrong about that but I don't see it.
Here's the thing that galls me: this isn't our best team but VPI's bad teams routinely beat our good teams and our good teams can't beat their bad teams. That is an overgeneralization, but you know it feels that way. Not just talking basketball, either. It seems like this rivalry is completely in our heads and we cannot find a way to play ourselves out of it.
It looks like they want it more. In everything.
It is time that we approach this rivalry with the same energy that they do. They are not a cow school. They are not our inferiors. They are a team that routinely beats our ass. I hate writing that but facts don't lie. In hoops we split the season series seemingly every year, but we win in a squeaker at home and get housed at Cassell.

He has a short memory. Being #1 seed in the NCAA tourney and being the
first #1 seed to be beaten by a #16 seed was WAAY more nationally embarassing.

Margin of victory of a 16 seed over a 1 seed.

One, our teams play to win, regardless of the opponent. Second, to slap their smug faces silly.

Ask UM or Ohio State if they froth at the mouth at any chance to beat the other in anything. The answer will almost certainly be yes. The Commonwealth Clash not only needs both teams to “hate” each other, but needs both fanbases to give a crap as well. We do our part, it’s time they do theirs

Could you imagine an opponent blasting Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods or Lebron James because they want to win too much?
You play to win the game.

their real rival, which even they know is a load of bull. Anytime someone tries to argue that they don’t care about the clash, I point to the 2019 football loss where they stormed the field after beating us. They seemed to care then haha
As for their “haha no rings” argument, whatever. I’m not convinced we won’t win a championship eventually in one of the big 3 sports. Just gotta put it all together eventually

How many NC's did any of his predecessors win? Terry Holland w/the most-sought after recruit in the country, 3-time National POTY? What world do people like this live in?

play in his system. I appreciate good defense, but I'm sure most top recruits would prefer to play in a more exciting system. And they'll have plenty of other options. That has to be a tough "sell" for TB and his coaches.

He believe he can teach D and the O will happen anyway. Sometimes it works (in Cassell) Sometimes not (on the road).
