He got the pieces he wanted, but the team still fell apart after Cattoor's injury and were never consistent enough on the defensive end to get that bid. - 2024 his moves in the portal didn't pay off, but we again looked to be an NCAA team (although weaker than 2023) but couldn't play consistent enough defensively (again). If he's such a great coach, I don't follow why he couldn't sort things out defensively for a 2nd year in a row. - Then we have this year, flipped the whole roster. While I get the NIL excuse, he brought in the pieces and we aren't just down, we are border line an embarrassment when you compare what the last decade has looked like. On the positive, our last two classes on paper look really promising, just missed out on two prospects that would have made this year's class one of VT's best since SGs last. To me MY needs some serious help to adopt to the new world. Hopefully he's asking for it behind the scenes. Publicly, he just seems frustrated with no answers, trying to replicate what's worked in the past. I get he's a great man, but VT is supposed to be big time D1 program and he's paid $3M to figure things out. Instead, we're not even competitive against our peers and buy-games are a toss-up.

My post is merely acknowledging that I can look past the current train wreck to see what CMY tried to build. It was a solid vision that played to his experience and strengths as a coach. But it didn’t work out. And this year is easy to understand why. BRoc should only be playing 10-15 min a game as he continues to learn behind Pedulla. Hammond should be learning from the bench as a redshirt or maybe get 2-5 min a game for some experience. But those guys are now forced to play a ton and they are in a critical position and part of the frustration for this year because they are learning on the job (through no fault of their own).

Who redshirted for us two years ago. Sophomore at 7-2 GW now leading theat team in points (16.8) and rebounding (8.4) while 2nd on the team in assists (a Mutts-like 2.9 per game) and chipping in 1.6 steals per game. There’s your starting 4.

The lack of NIL funds is a valid reason why VT can't currently compete with a lot of P5 schools. But take a look at the current KenPom rankings. VT is #153 in the country. If you excluded all teams above them that are members of the ACC, SEC, B10, B12, and BE... the power leagues in basketball... VT would still be #75. If you are a school the size of VT, a member of a P5 basketball league, with all the resources and exposure that membership provides, there is no freaking excuse for fielding a basketball program that is worse than that motley list of teams. VT is underachieving vs its peers in terms of financial support for hoops. But it is vastly underachieving its position in the overall pecking order of college basketball programs. And that is not purely money driven.

To get his NIL program going after the ACC tournament. He chose to sit on his butt vs build a support apparatus like know other . He had the mic and swallowed it . He is a very hard head coach that refuses to change with changing times . That's on MY not NIL not Portal . You have to continue to tweet the product in order to grow. He did not!!

I have 2 good friends who went to college with CMY and are friends of his. They think the world of him. There is a contingent of Wasp alumni that have followed him around wherever he has coached and go to his games giving support. That’s all the endorsement I need. I frankly feel sorry for the man. I’d bet that he doesn’t get the admin. support that most ACC coaches get. If he leaves or is run off there is no way IMO VT will be able to get a difference making coach.

Back then Commonwealth NIL was focused on basketball. I once went to a Commonwealth event where I saw a donor who has architecture named after him sitting with Pedulla, Cattor, Maddox, etc. It was right the spring of 2022, a month after we won the ACC. We got Mutts to come back. We signed Basile on a decent deal (for the time). Commonwealth was doing a nice job for hoops. But then the athletic department put its weight behind Triumph, which absorbed Commonwealth, and I don't think there has been very much focus on basketball-specific stuff ever since. I'm not saying MY couldn't do a better job. He's still dead last in NIL cash in the conference, and if you believe NIL and Portal are separate entities, you have no clue how the system works. The majority of P4 basketball HC's simply let their AD know how much cash they need to bring in competent players. CMY has WB as his sounding board. You blame CMY? He also managed to being in a competent PG and lost him before the season even began.
