DNG, Point Guard and next year
Okay, so GC’s comments in one of his below posts got me off the ledge ;-). The DNG news surprised me because he seemed to have even more minutes coming his way next season. His offense definitely approved, but I saw holes in his defensive play. My amateur eyes saw him struggle with switching and help defense. We would have struggled against ACC bigs next year if our 4s and 5s were Big John, DNG, Kidd, and the frosh 7 footer. With 2 of the 4 gone, I hope Plan B (ie transfer portal) provides us some ACC caliber bigs. Do you all think Kidd has more potential than DNG? Didn’t get to see much of him to judge his game.
Next question - who is going to back-up Pedulla? Please don’t tell me Hunter because he is much more effective at the 2. Are we looking for PG help in the portal? I hope Pedulla can handle a ton of minutes without getting in foul trouble.
Final question - if Mutts leaves, and we get no additional portal players, what are your guesses for starting 5 and next 3 off the bench?

If Mutts leaves and we don't get the portal players we're after RIGHT NOW, we'll be going after additional portal players, which I'm sure the staff is already working on. Apparently a D2 AA PF has been rumored to be holding an offer, though I assume it's only acceptable should Basile or Reid commit elsewhere. Portal players are still being added so I'm sure the portal recruiting season is far from over.

Can't comment on Kidd vs DNG except that that the coaching staff must think Kidd > DNG (or more importantly - very soon Camden and/or Buchanan > DNG)
Rice should back up Pedulla (and play some Wing)
Starting five right now:
PG Pedulla
Wings Cattoor, Maddux
PF Camden or Buchanan
C Kidd
First off the bench: Rice and Camden/Buchanan (depending on whom starts). After that, I'd prefer to wait see who transfers - they certainly will get someone.

Wish the “Kidd†all the best. But, IMHO he is not ACC caliber. Last year was pretty telling. Maybe CMY can work some magic…

What is the story on him? Has he simply not developed or got behind the wrong people and next year has a real chance contribute?

Lacks feel imo
liked his offensive tools in HS/AAU so he has something to bring to the table

Believe he reclassified and was basically still a high school player on a college team. This coming season will be his third year in a college program, so he should be more mature physically and mentally to play college ball.

He looks agile, bouncy and long. Word is good offensive skills, but defense needs work.
That said, if you played behind Aluma last year how much PT are you really going to get.

I am not sure Camden, Kidd, and especially Buchanan are really that critical to his decision, they are all behind DNG imho especially at the beginning of year. DNG probably asked MY to guarantee a starter position, but got a “noâ€, the reason was probably more due to someone we may get out of portal than those who are on our roster now.

instances where if I was a coach and a player came to me asking me to guarantee them a starter spot that I would agree. First, I am the coach and it is my job to coach and your job to play. Second, if you are asking for a guarantee that sets off a variety of red flags and alarms to me about your competitive and team mindset. Third, when a deal like that is made it sets a precedent that is difficult to break and a long term noose around the neck of both coach and program.

but I do think that for future years Camden and Buchanan are likely higher ceilings / better fits.

Yes, I see Kidd with a higher ceiling than DNG.
I think VTs portal additions will be very good.
Rodney Rice will back up Pedulla (as well as play alongside him), Cattoor will again be the emergency PG

I hope you are right GC about the very good portal additions. I hope we have a few of our targets committing this weekend or sometime next week. Portal players need to secure a roster spot very soon.
