Mat scouts just dropped a bomb
He reported the rumors he’s heard is we offered Bo a package totaling about 2.5 mil. Not sure how true that is but BIG if true. ** Edited by Rokie08 at 2/4/2025, 8:22:07 AM

I don't know how to feel about this tbh
Assuming it's true, it means we have more resources than I realized, which is good. It also means we have more of a chance than you would have thought before. But what the hell does that do to a locker room is a freshman comes in making that? James is really dang close to Bo as a prosoect in the same recruiting class. Maybe a tiny step behind without the big wins over college studs, but not by much. We have AAs that I don't think are making that much. Is Henson even making that? I've also heard it said that you should take a zero off the end of any rumored number you hear regarding wrestling nil. I'm not in the know enough to know if that's a good rule of thumb, but I would find that much more believable.

That's not a realistic comparison.
There is a big dropoff between Bo and James. No offense to James, but Bo has the potential of being a 4-time natty champ. He's already competing at the senior level.

Bo is already a marketing machine as well...
the kid has it figured out as we can see from his social media history and all his sponsors. He is probably the most recognized HS wrestler out there right now and it's not close. He will drag a LOT of tallent with him to where he chooses to go. A fat NIL deal for him will pay dividends in many ways including additional interest in the wrestling program from recruits as well as sponsors, fans and donors. It's a self fullfilling prophecy if he stays healthy and excels over the next 4-5 years. He has the potential to be a program changer even more than Mekhi and Henson have been for us given his accolades coming out of HS. Crossing my fingers and hoping to be pleasantly surprised that we get the nod tonight...but not getting my hopes up.

moderately new to wrestling and have a question about one of your comments
You say he is probably the most recognized HS wrestler out there right now. Is that also true for all time? Certainly the biggest I've heard about, but my knowledge is limited.

You're a teammate or commit unless it's your spot you want Bo on the team
and logically you understand he's going to take more NIL money than you. These kids are old enough to understand NIL vs. actual wrestling. Wrestlers specifically have a mentality that lends itself to compete regardless of NIL. You can compartmentalize NIL negotiations to a degree. I would say it's very possible Sasso makes more than Andy but Andy wins in the room and performs on match day and nobody has a problem with him getting the nod. I'd also say this sounds way out of our ballpark, however we might be able to offer more than I originally thought even if this rumor is off by a lot.

I mostly agree
And we're lucky to have a lot of maturity in our room. But it's one thing to make more than a teammate, and it's another to make 10 times as much. I obviously don't know if that's really the case, but you get the picture. I I'm glad I'm not the one that has to manage this.

That is so un-VT like if true.

I’d bet we could make a bunch over four years just on ticket sales.
If we can charge 4,000 people $10 a seat for six home matches that’s 240k a year. If we are going to get serious about non rev sports it’s time to treat them like many p5 schools do. And let’s not hear the “it’s in Blacksburg and we can’t do it”. Cornell is not in a great economic area and charges for almost everything. Auburn - same deal. Clemson has Greenville but we can still copy some of what they’ve done to fund non rev sports. I think many people should support non rev sports with season tickets and modest ticket costs. It’s more than we do now. Moss sells out every year. And time to add women’s wrestling. Forget what the rest of the acc is doing.

Maybe this is experience as a VT fan, but this never ends well for us lol

Oh I don’t think we will get him
I’ve seen this song and dance before where we are in the running for the best guy and they ultimately go elsewhere. It is encouraging that we have the means in this case to be competitive.

I think it takes a person that is interested in swimming against the stream
aka Kevin Jones vs wants the generational bag of money getting offered. 98% of guys will follow the money. 2% will take less money(still a lot) and choose to try and build something that hasn't been done.

He's a character but he's pretty tied in....
If we offered 2.5M you'd have to think we're a legit threat. We've lost out on plenty of guys that seem like they really wanted to come here (Dekraker just this cycle) because NIL was just too much. Still find it hard to believe but Willie is pretty legit with his info.

I'd find it hard to believe grassroots fundraising could do that. So
either the NIL collective has decided to fund it or there is an high net worth individual that's also a wrestling fan.
