College Football Playoff field basically just clinched FSU, Clemson leaving

“FSU went 13-0, winning its ACC Championship matchup against Louisville in ugly fashion, only to be left out of the College Football Playoff field in favor of a one-loss SEC Champion (Alabama) and a one-loss Big 12 Champion (Texas); the latter of which is leaving their conference next season. So why is FSU in the ACC again? And by that logic, why would Clemson remain in a conference that couldn’t even get its undefeated champion to the College Football Playoff? They shouldn’t. This decision by the College Football Playoff committee may as well have just clinched FSU and Clemson leaving the ACC for the SEC at some point. Perhaps some point very soon.”

you have wasted our time again. I only see 1 possible way to beat the GOR, and that’s still speculation, but it is possible.

and only speculated that FSU and Clemson’s desire to leave the ACC would be much greater after an undefeated conference champion wasn’t selected to make the playoffs. I wasn’t sure if that would be the case, but after reading a number of postings on other boards, there certainly are a lot of FSU fans who are thinking and saying the exact same thing.
And while it is impossible for anyone to provide the details of FSU and Clemson’s exit strategy involving the GOR and TV contract, it is becoming more and more likely that they have one and will soon exercise it. Also, it is impossible for anyone to argue that the GOR and TV contract are ironclad and can’t be challenged thus preventing FSU and Clemson from leaving barring an enormous financial settlement which neither school can afford. There simply are too many unknowns at this point to emphatically state either case.

FSU and Clemson should be no more or less desirous of leaving the ACC today then they were 24 hours ago.
What happened yesterday can not be repeated with 3x the teams going forward . And that kind of gave the Committee more cover to do their deed.

I was less pissed at the Saudis yesterday than I was at the CFP-SEC-ESPN Cartel.
Maybe some cartel on cartel action is what college football needs right now.

“I don’t mean to point fingers back at the ACC, but the ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips put out this manifesto earlier, outraged and 'unfathomable' — I think was his word — but he was one of those three commissioners that joined that alliance a couple of years ago that really stopped the 12-team playoff from being in existence today," Finebaum said, per On3's Grant Grubbs. The ACC, Big Ten, and Pac-12 formed an alliance to stick together over common goals. In January 2022, Phillips said it was "not the right time" to expand past four teams. He probably thinks differently at the moment. Florida State was the lone Power Five champion secluded despite staying unbeaten with an ACC title win over Louisville.”

how you can't have a CFP without the SEC in it.
“That’s not the real world of college football. Let’s go back to like ‘Sesame Street’ so we’re really basic — one of these things is not like the other, and that’s the Southeastern Conference.”
The SEC has dominated the playoff. But you have to view each season separately. That should mean nothing this year. Of all years, this CFP was set up for a simple selection. And they blew it.

There is no reason to drop a team that was #1 and had won something like 29 straight games to #6. They have the exact same record and what they have at #3 and #4 now. Plus they still had a chance to Win on Saturday with less then 3 minutes to go against Alabama.

“The College Football Playoff committee may have inadvertently kickstarted another wave of conference realignment with their recent announcement of who was in. The four teams that were deemed the best teams in college football are as follows; Michigan, Washington, Texas, and Alabama. As expected there has been some controversy following the decision as this season realistically would have been the perfect time to bust out the 12-team playoff, but instead, Florida State who went 13-0 and won the ACC was left out in favor of the Crimson Tide.”
I seriously doubt this decision will hurt the ACC in the long run.

Most of those eight — the most since the Pac-12 landed nine teams in bowls in 2017 — will be representing the conference for the last time after it got picked apart this summer during the latest round of realignment.”

You are sorely mistaken. Yes, FSU would get in with a 12 team playoff, but it will be loaded up in the future with a bunch of P2 schools with worse records than ACC (& B12) schools for the additional slots.
If you consider ND an "ACC School," then you'll think the conference will have two playoff schools most years, but don't expect the ACC's runner up to get a playoff spot very often...probably never.

ND gets nothing from the ACC regarding the playoffs from its ACC association.
(Yes, I know that it should not)
So, ND had to team up with the SEC to secure its potential playoff spot as an independent.

2020 was a one year safe harbor in a crazy worldwide pandemic year. So, yeah. Coincidence.
If 2020 had been a normal year with no Covid and ND independent, the Irish would have made the playoffs as an independent with the roster that went 10-0 in the regular season, 9-0 in the ACC.
If ND football now joined the ACC in full, they would face what FSU just faced. Better to stay independent.

still played 9 ACC games? I ask because the ACC decided that teams could only play 1 OOC game that year and it sounded like most (maybe all) the originally scheduled games against against Notre Dame would have been dropped to protect more important OOC game scheduled that same year (i.e. ACC-SEC rivalry games). If Notre Dame wanted to play a full schedule that year (i.e. 10 or more games), then the only option was to join the ACC as a football conference member.
