If I was FSU, Clemson, UNC & NC State, I would not pick up the telephone when Phillips called. Stanford is desperate from what I hear. They cannot even schedule P4 opponents as an Independent for the future. Notre Dame concerns about that in the long term probably was the main reason for the ACC attachment. The B1G would never had agreed to that arrangement.
Will the ACC bend over for Stanford just like for Notre Dame. Phillips has probably done got his visit from a bag man. Just like Swofford was sitting pretty after throwing the ACC under the bus for ESPN.
FSU and Clemson are football schools. They belong in the SEC or B1G. Not in the basketball ACC thinking ACC. Not caring about football is what causes all that corruption on Tobacco Road. Not enough football fans to hold anybody's feet to the fire.
I use to think of Virginia Tech as a football school. A decade ago was sure a different experience on this board. The Hokie fans said FSU leaving was no problem, that the Hokies would just follow FSU. FSU leaving would just be the good excuse. Not the mentality here now at all. I think the board is infested with tobacco road people that have been here for many years. They are thinking about good basketball.
I don't really care if FSU leaves the ACC or not. The SEC doesn't need them as some here have wisely noted. I just tire of the ACC homerism here. I think the SEC & B1G will both want a school in Virginia if the ACC ever folds. That will give the Hokies a good home. I really believe that.

(both football AND basketball) as that is what was on TV. We were happy once we finally got in and would prefer to stay but that's not looking too good right now.

Why wouldn't most on this board want the ACC to survive?
For Tech, the ACC has always been their final destination since 1953. It took 50 years to finally get in. Arkansas left the Southwest Conference for the SEC (which was a smart move since the SWC died 5 years later) but has never had to roam the college conference affiliation desert like Tech. SoCon, Independent, Metro/Independent, Metro/BEFC/EWL, A-10/BEFC/CAA, Big East/CAA/EWL and finally the ACC. IMHO, that's why there are so many "ACC homers" on this board. If I had my wish, I'd love to see the ACC remain intact. It fits Virginia Tech's culture and it has many close by rivalries. Too bad Maryland and USC-E left because they fitted right in. I'd rather have had WVU instead of Louisville duirng the last ACC expansion. I, personally, don't want Tech to roam looking for another conference again. It's like being a kid in a military family and moving six time in 12 years of grade and high school. You just want to settle down.

With the craziness going on with conferences and the problems that exist within the ACC; I would just like to make sure we are positioned long-term in good circumstances. And if that means leaving the ACC, so be it.
Since we have joined the ACC, I don't think the leaders have been looking out with what's best for the conference. And am somewhat agreed with FSU that you have to keep your options open. That doesn't mean you don't try to work through the issues. But I don't think the ACC will stay in it's same form for many more years.

Arkansas doesn't have that history of bouncing around trying to find a good home for the program. The Hogs could have been somewhat in that position bordering the Big-8 back then as much as the SEC. Arkansas could have went to the Big-8 as easily as the SEC. The Northwest corner of Arkansas is more mid west mentality than SEC southern south. That area of the state always voted Republican even 50 & 60 years ago. Long before the Republican Party became a southern thing. The South had voted Democratic previous to that recent change since the Civil War.
Frank Broyles had SEC roots but he was a visionary in college football. Broyles predicted a lot of this turmoil many decades ago. I just do not respond well to picky analysis of a word chosen while I am trying to convey something I read from multiple sources on the internet concerning expansion. I would not post anything I feel is false here. I just see it as condescending rubbish that is just opposed to the overall message of my post. I have not been on any FSU board encouraging them to leave the ACC. I would not ever want to be on those FSU boards after an experience of about a decade ago.

Tech was a charter member of the original Southern Conference, you could also say that the SEC was always the final destination.

Has Tech ever pushed for SEC membership during its history?
I don't think Tech ever has but I could be wrong. I do know that Tech wanted into the ACC since the 1960's (maybe even earlier) and tried numerous times but was always turned down by the Tobacco Road 4. The ACC thought Blacksburg was too isolated and hard to get to back in the early 1950's. Tech was also a military college at the time and was concerned about the effects post season games would have on the Corps of Cadets. Once Tech was transformed into a co-ed civilian state university during the early-to-mid 1960's, it sought ACC membership. T. Marshall Hahn wanted Tech to be associated with the UNC's, Maryland's and NC State's of that time, not VMI, Richmond and William & Mary.

I remember when they announced their invite by scrolling “SEC” across their scoreboard. They got what they wanted and have been basically an afterthought ever since.
(In response to this post by Old Line Hokie)
Never knew that. Tech tried to get into the ACC when USC-E left the ACC.
I think another time was when Georgia Tech got an invitation. Hard to believe that Georgia Tech left the SEC in 1964 but so did Tulane in 1966.

tire of ACC homerism on the board of an ACC member school as if the same sentiments would not be found on boards of schools in any conference.

From a person that has hoop in his moniker. Are you here because the Hokies have such a great history in basketball? Or are you actually from a tobacco road school where basketball is the all encompassing King?
No problem disclosing with where I am from. From Arkansas. I a am a Razorback fan? I have made many thousands of posts on Razorback football blog boards. There were many of those Hog football boards years back, most now defunct. I can count on my fingers the number of posts I ever made about Razorback basketball on those boards. You had me talking Razorback basketball in the past here with the memories you had of old Hog basketball teams. You are a basketball fan.

I also talked to you about Frank Broyles, Lou Holtz, the Orange Bowl, etc.. People can like more than one sport. The real issue was exactly what I said. We both know if I went on a Razorback site and talked about them being SEC homers or a Buckeye site for the BIG and did that how they would respond. I have been a hokie all my life and I grew up in the heart of ACC country. It wasn't an alibi, I called you for exactly what it was.

They would surely ignore you. I think the reason is the tough skin that Hog fans had to develop to endure the last decade of Razorback football. The program has plumbed depths not even seen back in the 1930's & 1940's.
However you are correct, if you ventured on an Alabama board criticizing the SEC. However, who has the Hokie football program most resembled since Beamer left? The Razorbacks or Crimson Tide?

thicker skins than others but, the overall point still rings true for all good conferences, fans of individual schools will defend their conference, some maybe more vociferously than others.

on their watch. Of course neither thought the 5 football game ACC agreement would ever happen either, until it did. I guess we will find out soon enough, this thing needs to end one way or the other.

that this thing will likely end when ESPN and/or FOX say it will end. The network(s) have been driving this from the beginning. It is pure folly to believe Sankey, Warren or Swarbrick devised these plans on their own to engineer the movements of UT/OU, USC/UCLA and CFP expansion. ESPN had a workable plan until A&M decided to throw a wrench in the scheme. FOX fired back. The only real question now is whether it ends with mutual cooperation to divide the pie, war with spoils to the victor or somebody unforeseen/unexpected stepping in.

many times. The only addition to what you are saying is that NBC has played a huge part too. They seem to be clearly angling for the ND B1G games. Which explains why ND wants Stanford in the ACC, but won’t add a 6th game even though they are already playing them.
The question is, what happens when ESPN and Fox demand 10 games in the Conference? IMHO there are lots of moves left on the table.

I recall some of yours that did not happen.
You were certain at one point or another that:
1) ND football would join the ACC,
2) the "Alliance" would put ND and the SEC in their places,
3) a 12 team playoff with 6 at large bids would not happen

I dont care any way..... but Cal is a beautiful view.... for an afternoon game.
you can rest assured.. the numbers in regards to revenue has to be there for UNC and State.
I dont know why... but in regards to the rest of the conference, before the Cal Stanford thing was not supported but when Fla State expressed their discust and demands for not complying with it, it might have changed the dynamics.
FSU... you have done more to uniify the conference and basically have boxed you in. They can get all the money to see if they can buy out the grant of rights, but at the end .. ACC owns it and you have to ask for it back. ... thats a choice.. by the acc to do. and that is separate from separation and exit from the conference.

15 deadline has passed, that increases the odds that it is a hollow threat. I guess there's a school of thought that they needed another year to get their challenge together, but you'd think they would have figured out their escape angle by now. If more teams get added then a vote to dissolve is even more unlikely.

I could see ESPN wanting a west coast presence.
Oregon and Washington would be better to include too, but they weren't interested and the ACC was too slow.
