What if the ACC top dogs all want out
can that be renegotian play and settle on a different $ exit . Current ACC seems destined for small potatoes

FSU and Clemson are probably a given and I see UNC's name mentioned a lot but other than that, I just don't see another school that fits neatly into that category. Miami gets mentioned occasionally, but for the life of me I can't figure out how relevant they are these days (very low attendance, no on-campus football stadium, mediocre results for the past two decades, etc.). Beyond that.....it's hard for anyone else to feel secure and it's a virtual certainty that a few others (BC, Wake, Syracuse) are done for as far as big-time football goes once the ACC breaks up.

they have a niche in trailer parks, and wife beater, flat billed hats on sideways wearing ****holes all over the country. People who can't spell college, much less went to one, will spend the last dollar they got from trading food stamps for cash at a quarter on the dollar to buy a Miami tank top and knee length shorts to wear standing in line at the unemployment office. They watch the games and buy whatever swill beer is advertised, which is exactly what the media companies are looking for.

I am describing people I knew in Iowa that were hardcore Miami fans.

we have to be good or have a hook to be relevant, real national brands don't. We were good and we had Frank who was a story. We're just another state U now.
There is a difference between being recognizable and being a brand. Brands, people in Peoria buy your gear with no connection to the school. I lived in the Midwest, Miami, UNC, Clemson, FSU gear in local sporting goods stores, no VT, even when we were winning conf titles.

in the conference, except maybe Clemson. Doesn't matter how good you are, it matters whether people will turn on the TV and watch you, especially outside your local market. No one outside the mid atlantic gives a crap about a VT or UVA or Wake or NCState game, but they'll watch Clemson, FSU and Miami if they are on a national slot.

2026 and 2031. And ACC can probably renegotiate with certain additions. What the conference does, if anything, with the look-ins and potential adds will determine it's post 2036 future, imo.
Right now it is hard to visualize survival beyond 2036 because of the diversity in sports marketability of the members. I mean we had a member last year and another this year that aren't play ANY OOC P5 football games. NONE! But they are getting the same base income. That's probably okay when the difference in conference income from the highest (B1G) to lowest (PAC) is maybe 10%. But in today's landscape, it is just nuts.
I think ESPN will ultimately determine the future of the ACC. The ACC is a money maker for them. And as it stands, ACC schools will make maybe 25-30% more than the Big 12 teams (under their new contract). There is no reason for an ACC school to bolt that direction right now.
But ESPN's willingness, or lack thereof, to find a sweet spot between Big 12 and SEC will make or break the ACC.
I will say it until I'm blue in the face, the ACC should only split in-conference revenues and let the teams keep own their OOC income. That would be a good faith move and fair to all.

It has taken at least at decade between the SEC expansions. Probably no changes coming to alter that schedule.
The PAC is gone. The B1G & Big 12 members are voting tonight respectively to accept Oregon, Washington, Arizona State & Utah. Arizona was accepted by Big 12 members already yesterday. They say the PAC front office will make one last telephone appeal tomorrow morning to PAC members to save the PAC.
ESPN & Big Media precipitated the fall of the PAC like a lit match causes a forest fire. By dealing out that $32 MM a year media deal with pay adjustments for new members to the Big 12. While denying the PAC everything but unproven technological Apple Streaming. That was orchestrated by Big Media about like everything else these days. Good luck with the windows on that present ACC media deal. ESPN will be broke and that message will be repeated all across the internet. The ACC is on life support with that GOR and even that highly benefits ESPN.

Garbage back-handed slap at the board. Classy.
WADR to daveinop's fine post, not much was said there that hasn't been mentioned on this board over time.
This board I have always found to be a nice and engaging forum of college football fans contributing ideas, knowledge and banter on this quite complex topic. I'm sorry you don't see it that way.

Even if 8 wanted out, there is no guarantee they will land anywhere. It's not a given as to what the criteria is anymore. At one time it was media markets. Well Boston hasn't been a financial boom for ACC nor has Dallas for the Big 12, so that's probably not it anymore. Wins and losses are good, but until last year FSU wasn't setting the world on fire and they are being mentioned. Heck if it was wins/losses Wake Forest should be close to the top. So we are in a place of ultimate uncertainty and it's not looking great right now. Meanwhile the Pawl Finebaum's of the world continue to be smug and dismissive of anything not $SEC and to a lesser extent the BIG. Heck he was laughing today when he said the college playoff needs to change in 2 years and just take the top 12 and limit it to the $EC and BIG.

The CFP is fixin' to become the football version of a B1G-SEC Challenge.
Deal me out.

They are going the way of NASCAR. They are chasing the almighty $ and leaving those that got them here. It's not worked out for NASCAR and I don't think it will work out for CFB long-term. Thankfully Roanoke College is getting a team in a few years and I can get excited about some D-III football locally in addition to whatever league the Hokies end up in.

just like NASCAR, CART, NHL (NBA and NFL are doing it differently). Chase the next dollar and ignore why you have the dollars you have. Eventually you can't pay the promises and it all comes back to earth. BIG just NASCARed iteself, we'll see if the SEC is smart enough not to.
CFB isn't going anywhere and if the ACC is smart and not do something stupid like expanding, we will be in a strong position to prosper in whatever the new world is (what we are seeing this week isn't it).

Grant of Rights for each school is not defined, ACC determines, not the school and then there is a buyout to leave the conference. Why should the membership negotiate for anyone.???

You’d have to be pretty foolish to think that the majority of ACC institutions will simply accept a 30-50M deficit and slowly die on the vine. Unity is great but not if the best possible outcome is you get to vie for the title of tallest midget - that’s where we are at right now.

This isn't a conspiracy. The big 12 went to market after Texas and OU left and got $30mm/school. Pac 10 was offered $20something.
Close to $40mm is Market for the acc ratings. Maybe low if we had 2-3 top ten teams at a time.

All I was saying is there is NO way that the majority of ACC institutions are going to stand pat and do nothing while getting relegated to a bottom tier status behind not only big names (e.g. Georgia,Alabama, Ohio State etc) but Maryland, Iowa, Minnesota, Vanderbilt, Ole Miss etc despite whatever you feel like their “market value” is.
The ACC as a whole may not survive but you can bet that a large number individual institutions will do what they have to to survive.

BIG and SEC (BIG more than SEC) fans are much more loyal to their conference and watch games, thus produce ratings and thus revenue. One of the ACCs biggest problems is, we watch our schools, but not the rest AND no one outside the Atlantic cares about the ACC.
(In response to this post by HydrogenHokie)

If you’re saying that schools like say Minnesota are more valuable than a North Carolina even if the individual institution may not have a loyal following that isn’t true at all. People follow brands, and that is worth money.

basketball blue bloods, football irrelevant.
MINN and all the other big State Us not named OSU and Mich would be comparable to us and all the big state U's not named FSU and Clem.

Any casual fan even on the West Coast is going to know Michael Vick, Tyrod Taylor, Frank Beamer, Bruce Smith, Bud Foster, Deangelo Hall.
And likely the Edmunds and Fuller brothers, Khalil Herbert, Logan Thomas, Joey Slye, and others (Fantasy Football if for nothing else)
Quick, name a famous U Minnesota player. I’ll save you the search: Bronco Nagurski (1930’s) and that’s about it. Marion Barber and Eric Decker maybe. And PJ Fleck (as the coach) and Tony Dungy if you Google search it (I didn’t know some of these and I am not a casual fan).
VT’s got a better marketing presence than our own fans give credit for.
Now do that same exercise with Indiana, Purdue, Iowa, Maryland, and Rutgers.
They are not close to us in terms of nation wide marketing.
Plus, everyone everywhere has seen and gotten goosebumps from the Enter Sandman entrance.
Don’t forget the lunchpail defense, Hokie Bird (National mascot of the year many times), turkey legs at Lane Stadium, multiple Gameday appearances, Thursday night sweethearts for decades, and even basketball’s environment and the bacon giveaways that made USA Today and CNN and every other outlet.
VT is highly marketable. Fans from other conferences will tune in to a Thursday night game of VT vs anyone because we are highly entertaining as a program even when we are mediocre on the field. But let’s fix that too of course.
VT BABY!!!

Like FSU,Clemson, UNC,UVA,VT,NCST don’t have a market value of equal or greater value than that of several of the B1G or SEC?

have decent football ratings. That isn't a majority. Without them, the ok football, decent media markets and good hoops keeps us slightly ahead of the big 12 most likely.
