Saw TG: Maverick yesterday. Fun, but yeah, I'll make one complaint.
That mission was already impossible enough. Why did they have to add the fiction of "Oh, and this enemy, who is just now enriching uranium, actually has better planes than us"?
They already had flying through the Death Star trench, pulling off some impossible climbs and dives, hitting the small Death Star sized hole....twice... and then probably fighting their way out against other planes. Did the 'other planes' actually need to be pitched as "more advanced"? Does any country out there actually have more advanced planes?
But overall we enjoyed it. Fun, good action, even if a predictable ending.

Fighting aliens in space, vampires, time travel, super heros.... No problem.
But a guy flying the wrong jet too fast, at an impossible altitude, making impossible maneuvers/shots.... Ridiculous!
Not picking on you. We all do it. We love things like insane car chases, fight scenes, and wild plots in movies. But not if it's Top Gun.

entertaining and I really don't think they took themselves too seriously. I did tell me kids that this was probably the last old fashioned movie they'll ever see where the guy gets the girl and literally rides off into the sunset.

not the worst movie I've ever watched. Top Gun is an attention grabber anytime it's on, for me, but this one won't do that. Watching once will be enough.

…the lack of the use of F-35s. 35s should have been used on standby to counter the enemy’s fifth generation fighters and SAMs. Instead we have a trench run with F-18s that have to fight their way out once they hit the target. Once the airfield was hit, they knew they were coming, why not actually put some effort into it with superior American military power. 35s on the deck? No, they can stay there and let our 18s pilots simply deal with it.

Aircraft and then switched over to new platforms. One friend flew A-10s in AFG and he went to the F-35. May have been the 22 but I think 35. I know 2x last year grads of USAFA that are in flight training now and I think expect to eventually fly 22s or 35s.
I’m pretty sure I knew a few previous F-18 pilots that transitioned to the newer ACs - they’ve already proven themselves to be able to master that AC in combat deployments.

...not many are NATOPs qualified to fly both. You have to renew your NATOPs qualifications yearly, and transitioning from F-18s to F35s probably takes at least 9 months in the RAG/FRS, so by the time you are NATOPS qualified in the F-35, your NATOPs qualification has probably expired in the F-18.
Now there are probably a few guys who hold NATOPs qualifications in both aircraft at places like VX-5...
