My daughter has had her learner's permit for a week and chalked up her
first road kill last night. Can you guess the animal? And no, definitely NOT her fault. I'll provide more details once we get a few guesses in.

In New Hampshire once, we saw a cow in the distance and I thought it was
a moose. I've spent a LOT of vacation time in NH and ME, but never seen a moose. Of course, we never went on one of those moose sighting tours.

I still remember the scripts of Barney, especially from the [worn out] VHS from the show at Radio Music Hall.

A mouse. What the hell a mouse was doing on that exit of the NYS Thruway,
I have no idea. I don't ever remember in 40 years of driving even seeing a mouse outside near the road. Obviously no damage to the car, but we assume that the mouse is toast, as she and my wife saw it coming (but too late to do anything), and then felt a pretty small 'bump'. It was on an exit from the New York State Thruway, in a 270 degree turn with barriers on both sides of the lane. No place to swerve or try to avoid. Years ago, my daughter would have been very saddened to have killed such a cute and cuddly animal. But now, well she's certainly not heartless, but understands that if it's a choice between the mouse and you, or a choice between the mouse and running into a Jersey barrier, well then Jerry just has to die.

I hit one on 460 back home in 1992
Black Angus steer in the middle of the road around midnight. I was coming around a curve and obviously didn't expect Mr. Bovine to be there. Hit him full speed. Then the car behind me also ran over him. Walked away with a broken nose and a pretty busted up face. The bridge of my nose still doesn't exactly look right. Could have been a whole lot worse. Thankfully my passenger (now Mrs. Fiji) wasn't hurt at all.

This kid wasn't hurt, saw it and tried to swerve around...
side swiped the cow. Driver's side had some damage.

Strange as it may sound, cows occasionally
get loose and wind up on roadways. Back in 1966 on my way home while driving my mother’s tank (a 1963 Buick Wildcat) a cow/steer was walking down the middle of northbound I81 near Buchanan, Va. Somehow I saw it in time to avoid it. But otherwise there would have been “hamburger” all over that section of I81.

Out West, it's a regular occurrence...
You can drive in a number of areas that are considered free range areas and cattle can wander anywhere, including the road. I was heading out to go quail hunting one morning (still dark) and was still a bit groggy when I noticed something quickly approaching my vehicle. Slammed on the brakes just in time to avoid hitting a massive bull just hanging out in the middle of the road. Would have been a bad morning had I hit it, probably totaled the vehicle. PLUS, if you hit cattle on free range, YOU are financially responsible for the loss to the rancher.

Check out the sign.
But a cow would starve on the grass available. This was in southwest Utah.

On the 'back route' from Blacksburg to 81 (go past the Homeplace, RIP) and
a friend and I rounded a corner and there were several cows who had gotten out of their fence area, milling in the road. Not knowing what else to do, my friend honked and that scared them all as they bolted back for the safety of their normal pasture.

I almost did this heading to work one morning. There was one handing around the neighborhood and we had a fresh snow that evening. Noticed a bloody spot in a yard and brought my attention back to the road when it swooped in front of my truck and lit in a dead tree right along the road. As I proceeded to soil myself, I looked in the rear view mirror and noticed there was a dead rabbit in the road that was 1. the source of the massacre scene that caught my attention and 2. was in the process of collecting after apparently dropping in the middle of the road.
