real estate. If I was paid $500k in a year with the expenses I had in college (ie. not much), 85% of it would be going to investments. I have to think it's the inverse.

They are subject to the same responsibilities/accountabilities as the rest of us. They can handle their own consequences.

I agree that most of these kids are just going to blow through it. Part of it is youth and immaturity, the other part is they assume if you're payed like a pro, you'll always be a pro. I don't think most will ever earn as much money per year again.

...to get some new gear when I was in school in the late 90s. Now you can shop from your phone. But, honestly, outside of a cool car and some kicks, what does a college kid need? Hell, beers are $4.

I know what my company used to pay well known people (Brett Favre, Nolan Ryan) for print and TV ads. No way anyone would know or relate to some offense tackle making that much money. I thought there was to be a process to vet NIL to make sure the value was correct.

Revenue sharing from the school and NIL.
Both separate buckets. I am pretty sure that the article is talking about the revenue sharing budgets and amounts allocated to players to be paid from the athletic departments. I think VT is allocating about $14-16M of their $20.5M to football players.

Make the math work. Especially with increased roster size. Just a starting qb and rb takes away 2 to 3 million. Then you look at reserves a second and third string qb and rb will cost or they will be somewhere else. Hard to squeeze those numbers into 16 million. Across the board second string needs to be paid or they will go elsewhere. If I take 44 players as your 2 deep. Divide into 16 million it’s 363k or so. Doesn’t sound bad. But that leaves zero for the other 50 on the roster. Doesn’t take into account the high dollar positions lowering that average.

As a matter of fact, the numbers are a smidge lower than I expected at a few positions, and a little high at receiver.

themselves on the line.”
I have heard folks say things to that effect for decades. The implication they are playing for free - just for exposure or for the love of the sport - is certainly not true now. It probably never was, especially if one puts value on education and the college experience,
plus whatever was in the McDonald’s bag.

I watched the single a minor league Fredericksburg nationals (nationals) play Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Houston) last night. I saw the no 1 draft pick of he nationals 17 year old play for Fredericksburg. contract 8 Million dollar contract at 17.
Kids getting their value for their skills (and with that money) can go back anytime for college. but heck getting 8 figures salaries set you you up for life.

can get six or 7 figures to play for Virginia Tech.
No one cares if you are having to take out student loans to pay for your education at VT OR if you have to work weekends and nights to pay for school and thus, cannot attend sporting events.

The BOV will attack the money from all angles and I'm sure raising this fee will be one of many angles taken...

If not..the school itself will suffer eventually

statement. Why should student fees help pay for things when everyone knows regular students will never gain access to them? I think it is a valid question and one I would be asking if I was sending a child off to college.

...they are still paying for their fellow student athletes to play ball who are now long gone and could be playing real professional sports, collecting a nice hefty paycheck.
Students should not be burdened with the costs of paying for their fellow peers to play ball.

And, I believe, under the fairly recently passed state law, cannot occur again for a few years, with limits on any subsequent increases. I, personally, don't agree with the increase, but I ain't callin' the shots. Either way, it doesn't affect me personally because my kids have already graduated from VT. Those with family members in college (or soon to be) have a very personal viewpoint, and I understand that.
There are some on here who would have everyone give everything they have short of bankruptcy to prop up football. As @bourbonstreet and myself have said for a long time, it's easy to spend other people's money. I often ruminate how much these "all-in for football" posters personally contribute. When I'm in a dour mood, I think they don't contribute as much as others, and want the rest of us to give more to prop up/subsidize their desires. Methinks that's why they want to student athletic fees to go higher.
From my viewpoint, Whit is and has been in panic mode. He's doing all the easy stuff (increased athletic fees, more money from the BoV, etc.) to avoid making the tough decisions and stay employed until 2029. You can use a lot of words to describe Whit, but courageous ain't one of 'em. He's ignored opening up new revenue streams (charging for all sports, corporate sponsors, new apparel contracts, etc.) while spending like a profligate sailor (apologies to the Navy folks on here). He's outsourced everything with little to no oversight, and abdicated his responsibilities repeatedly. He is, and has been, an empty suit.

the worse it looks. We have consistently made bad decisions for growth, money, spending, hiring, support, and facilities for a very long time. And there is plenty of blame to go around. But Whit is here now and has been here for awhile so he deserves a hefty portion of that blame.
Even if VT had oil money and billionaire donors willing to spend it, I'm not confident that it would be spent well.
$150-200 million may seem like a lot, but I've been part of programs at work that are much bigger in scale. It's not that hard to be organized, be prepared for multiple scenarios, push hard for funding/resources when you need it, and execute quickly. But it does require the right kind of leadership.

The problem with that is that it would not be nearly as lucrative, and that wouldn't sit well with the administration. Let's not pretend that higher education is actually all about education these days. It's a huge business, and universities want to maximize their profits. So, pay up, students!
