And, I believe, under the fairly recently passed state law, cannot occur again for a few years, with limits on any subsequent increases. I, personally, don't agree with the increase, but I ain't callin' the shots. Either way, it doesn't affect me personally because my kids have already graduated from VT. Those with family members in college (or soon to be) have a very personal viewpoint, and I understand that. There are some on here who would have everyone give everything they have short of bankruptcy to prop up football. As @bourbonstreet and myself have said for a long time, it's easy to spend other people's money. I often ruminate how much these "all-in for football" posters personally contribute. When I'm in a dour mood, I think they don't contribute as much as others, and want the rest of us to give more to prop up/subsidize their desires. Methinks that's why they want to student athletic fees to go higher. From my viewpoint, Whit is and has been in panic mode. He's doing all the easy stuff (increased athletic fees, more money from the BoV, etc.) to avoid making the tough decisions and stay employed until 2029. You can use a lot of words to describe Whit, but courageous ain't one of 'em. He's ignored opening up new revenue streams (charging for all sports, corporate sponsors, new apparel contracts, etc.) while spending like a profligate sailor (apologies to the Navy folks on here). He's outsourced everything with little to no oversight, and abdicated his responsibilities repeatedly. He is, and has been, an empty suit.
